Justin McInerney
Sydney Swans youngster Justin McInerney is lightning-quick, an endurance machine and a clean user of the footy who’s best used on a wing or at half-back. The Northern Knights product was called up for his AFL debut against Melbourne at the SCG in Round 4, 2019, and although he wouldn’t feature at the top level again in his first year at the club, he was a stand-out in the NEAFL. McInerney is eyeing more opportunities at senior level in 2020.

Justin McInerney
DOB: 18 August 2000
DEBUT: 2019
DRAFT: #44, 2018 National Draft
RECRUITED FROM: Banyule (Vic)/Marcellin College (Vic)/Northern U18

So frustrating at times watching this guy
He does some amazing stuff, but its counterbalanced by the head slapping clangers he also has been providing this year.
There was at least four brain fades this game that were inexplicable and momentum changing

Maybe its just the personnel we are missing and the effect is the team is out of sync?

He was an elite kick at one stage

I was there tonight for the 2 last that he completely ****ed

No confidence what so ever

He would normally drill that goal not pass both

He was that level below the big 3 and a massive reason we were good

He has this thing that a few other do as well, he kicks off about two steps and with his
instep with half a follow through and turns it over almost every time, when he drop punts and kicks through the ball he is better.

Too much show pony kicks ….

Needs to head down the under 9's kicking drills tomorrow to remember how to kick again
I think a few weeks in the 2s would be good for Justin. He seems to have forgotten how to do the basics well. It's every week now since he was rushed back last year before he was ready and played awfully. Getting to the ball is no help if he then butchers it.

I'd rather see someone get else a chance on merit. Cox needs to be prepared to swing the axe on his faves.

He drills those 2 gettable goals we’d be singing his praises with 3 in the last quarter.
Take away those 2 shockers and his last quarter was pretty good
Unfortunately kicking goals are somewhat important

Yes but he was never going to drill them both, to be honest I was socked he got the first

It’s an absolute furphy that he “was an elite kick”, he’s been pulling these Auskick disposals since day 1 on the list.

There’s a reason we picked him up with a late draft pick, he wasn’t a bargain, he’s an amazing athlete, but an average footballer with sub par skills

Yeah agree, he was always a below average kick borderline shocking but his running power ability, versatility and positioning was always good.

Will probably be just a C+ player for the rest of his career

A+ for finding the pill yesterday and impacting the game
D- for effectiveness and IQ yesterday. Basic skills errors, lack of composure and awareness
apply rinse repeat

Can't defend his errors but he is improving week to week, seems a confidence player, sending him to the twos will damage him imo .

I think we can keep working on his issues and tidy them up. There are worse users of the ball in the team currently , they all need to work on decision making.

Roberts was just as bad as Jmac yesterday. Butchered it also.

People need to accept he is going to make errors, it's just the way he plays. He's by far and away our most creative player, and when he's finding the ball 20+ times mostly in a streaming forward position, he's going to make a handful of clangers. I'll take that over a vanilla winger who lacks creativity when it comes to breaking the lines.

His turnovers are never going to be the sole reason why we lose, but the ones he does make go a long way as to the reason why we win. We lose when we play shit collectively, an uber clean jmac wont help that.

Doesnt help his cause amongst supporters when alot of is disposals come in promising attacking positions. But that's half the battle - credit to him for being able to make himself dangerous majority of the time. Hes increased his touches significantly, and he's demonstrated great efficiency before. Just let him cook.

Can’t someone teach him a better ball drop technique ? No wonder he scrubs his kicks and misfires. Some drills in this space could make the difference.

It's all well and good that he is improving, but if he's costing us 2-3 goals/shots at goal from awful kicks each week, it's an issue. And most of his kicks inside 50 aren't under a great deal of pressure either...he's usually in a good amount of time and space to deliver them.

I'd also defend him/have a bit more leeway towards him a lot more if he tracked back on defence and knew how to lay a tackle, but he doesn't. He's almost 100 games into his career and still approaches tackles off-balance and with one flailing arm.

He's a winger who doesn't impact the scoreboard often enough, have the smarts and desire to defend or has a point of difference that separates himself from other wingers. At the moment, I'd say he is one of those vanilla wingers you mention.

I just can't agree given the fact he is able to get himself into dangerous positions consistently. No other winger in the league has his overlap ability at the moment. Other vanilla wingers struggle to get half the chances he manages. His workrate is immense at the moment. Even with his turnovers I still think he's a net gain vs if we had a different standard wingman just in terms of state of play. If he manages to be cleaner then we'd have by far and away the best winger in the league.

I think he does enough defensively too despite not being built like a brick. He's never going to be a strong tackler unless it's a plum oppertunity. Having a player of his qualities and build along with rock solid defence and pin point skills just does not exist in today's game. The last I can think of is Isaac smith.

I think perceived pressure also has a big part to play and is affecting many players not just him. The team just isnt gelling at the moment and it can create tension even when it seems he's not under much heat. And he's finding himself getting it alot more than ever before, it's uncharted territory. He'll get cleaner as he adjusts to it.
