Danny Stanley

A very bottom aged youngster, he was drafted to the Pies after the season 2004 failure, the hard-nosed midfielder/defender from Geelong u18s looked to make a big impression early. He bode his time in Williamstown, in 2005, as was the case in 2006.

At the start 2007 season, Stanley suffered a ankle injury that caused a halt to his pre-season. Not one to be deterred, he put his head down, and went about his rehabilitation, in the most productive way possible. And the results speak for themselves. Although he only managed two games, he hit career best-form in the twos.

It is clear that Malthouse is a fan once labelling him a 'bull of a player'; matching him up against Russell Robertson on debut and having him as an emergency for the prelim.

One to watch.

More to follow....

Really looking forward to the input Stanley has in 2008. Should be the next in line to become a regular. I wander how his pre-season has been going, so I'll be paying extra attention to him tomorrow at training.

Have a strange feeling he wants his #28 to be big again at Collingwood.

Looking good at trainign seems to be working on endurance instead of a heap of weight work (unlike penders and thomas who need muscle), seems to be inline for early season selection, is looking very good.

On another note met Danny's dad during the season at a game, he is a fantastic bloke who seems to love collingwood, gets involved in everything with the crowd, has alot of respect for malthouse and is very proud of his son, looked like he was about to cry and had a massive smile when he saw his son signing autographs

From CFC website in an interview with Nick Maxwell:

Nick Maxwell says the players are using the South Africa training camp to ensure they are fully equipped to achieve greater things in 2008.

With the club having used their high-altitude Arizona camps in November of 2005 and 2006 to acquire a fitness base for the pre-season, the South African camp is conditioning the players from both a fitness and match scenario standpoint, with the team preparing for the pre-season cup match against Adelaide in Dubai on February 9.

After arriving on Sunday evening at the club's base in Potchefstroom, about 120 kilometres south west of Johannesburg, the group had an intensive training run on Monday, before focusing more on strategy on Wednesday, with the differences to the Arizona camps noticeable.

"The training's a lot different which is good," Maxwell told collingwoodfc.com.au after Wednesday's session.

"We went to Arizona in November so it was more based on fitness and getting up and going, where as now we're looking at games, and I think everyone's preparing for games so I think they're enjoying it a bit more.

"Today was a bit lighter. Monday was going to be light, but I think everyone was pretty fresh and everyone wanted to get into it after having the weekend off and doing all the travelling, so everyone was keen to get into it and have a pretty solid hit out."

More specifically, on Wednesday the squad took the chance to focus on the game plan.

"Today was more based on stoppages, and we did a lot of different work with our structures and moving the ball forward.

"I think the boys got a lot out of it, especially the stoppage and midfield boys, they had a really good hit out, so it's going to be good for them come Friday to have the full structure at either end of the ground."

With leaders Nathan Buckley, James Clement and Paul Licuria retiring at the end of 2007, Maxwell has identified some young players who have made noticeable strides in their leadership.

"It's good to see Danny Stanley, Ryan Cook, Sam Iles, those sort of guys who are three year players now, and Sean Rusling, that group.

"They're showing a lot more direction and they're a lot more confident, because they're all coming off such good pre-seasons themselves, and they're all super fit, so those guys have come out of their shells a bit more now, they've been around a few years and are starting to realise they can play at the level. Those four guys are going really well."

While the on-field training has so far been done on a rugby ground, the players will be using an oval on Friday for an intra-club practice match, while the off-field training has involved using the world-class facilities at the North West University, which Maxwell described as "sensational".

While the physical benefits of training at altitude allow the players to place more aerobic stress on the body than if they were at sea level, Maxwell also explained the benefits of the group travelling together from a bonding point of view.

"Obviously we've only been here a few days, but I think what it's done is it's brought everyone closer together.

"We're a tight group and we spend a lot of time together, which is good because you get to know everyone a little bit better, and a lot of the new guys who have come through are fitting in really well."
In comparing this camp to previous camps in Arizona, there are also palpable culture differences that allow the players to live and learn about another foreign country.

"The one (major difference between South Africa and the United States) is probably the safety aspect, we're told to always be careful where we're going.

"The headlines in the newspaper in the last two days have been ‘rapist gets r*ped' and ‘three cops shoot one another', so it's been a little bit of an eye opener for us, so safety's probably the main one.

"Apart from that, just different facilities, and we went out to the slums, and got to see what it is like for some of the people here who live in little tin shacks and it's obviously pretty hard for them.

"So it was good to get down there, give out a few hats, and get to know them a little bit, and cheer up some of the orphaned kids who were around, so that was a good experience for us."

Interesting to see Danny was best of the Collingwood listed players in the intraclub match last week but still didn't get a gig this week. He played in the centre and won the clearances but MM still won't give him game time - while the seniors got flogged in the centre. Must be a MM gameplan based on doing bugger=all about our midfield. Beats me.

Mick is a HUGE fan of Danny.
He will unleash him soon, don't worry about that.

Still think MM's a huge fan? He unleashed him alright but re-leashed him just as quick. He copped a heap of flack for his game last week but he was a long way from being the worst - in fact he played OK after 1/4 time and still gets dropped for Holland.

Danny has been doing well in the 2s most games is one of the best. Do not see why MM is reluctant to show some faith and rotate the kids in, given the Pies are not as strong as the ladder suggests.

Looks like he will miss out again. First emergency for yet another week.. I suppose we really do not need him in the midfield at this moment. His 26-30 quality disposals, hard at the ball, protecting his fellow players, fantastic clearance rate, great strong marking ability, lightning quick hand balls, unselfish team game etc etc etc are obviously not needed!!!! FFS Malthouse
take a good look at the boy forget your little old favourites and give him the go he has earned and deserves. Trouble is he is not a show pony. He is the hard worker that takes the knocks and does the hard work for the show ponies who obviously reap the rewards.
If he was at any other club he would be a regular......

Good to see this thread busy. Danny seems to be the man of the moment on the board. What about the rumour that Leon will be out and he'll play?

Haven't heard that one... Will believe it when I see it. Was first emergency last week and Sandy Roberts said he thought he was playing but it did not eventuate. Lets hope so but won't hold my breath!!!!!!

Have high hopes for Stanners with his clearance work, skills and overall game.

Just needs a chance in his actual position in the 1's, the midfield

You just get better and better.
I just love this kid!!! He is so tough and accountable. He places the ball perfectly for Dawes and the likes time and time again. He is lightning fast and gets the ball out of the middle almost everytime. He owns the Midfield.
You are a gem......
He has to play against Hawthorn and onwards.. We have a real find in him.
Yes it has taken a few years to establish himself but he has made it...
GO STANNERS
:thumbsu::thumbsu::thumbsu::):)

Hope he plays on Friday Night against the Hawks:thumbsu:
