No point risking injury in the VFL when the benefits of any conditioning cannot be transferred to the AFL.

This is not the case in the previous 23 weeks of the season.
I guess it depends what he can get out if it.

If there's a tactic or a skill the club wants him to work on, it's absolutely worth it.

And if he does get re-injured this coming game like previous occasions (which nobody can guarantee isnt going to happen) he will probably have to retire.

And all the arguements from all the people saying we should have played him will be catastrophically wrong. If it happens, I don't want to hear 'it was bad luck'.

If there is any benefit in holding him back he should be. There's a full off season of additional strength and conditioning available.
And all the arguments from all the people saying he should've played in the VFL are what?

There isn't some magical spell that gives a player protection in the VFL.

If he played 5-6 weeks in the VFL, and then got injured in the AFL, that is quite literally bad luck.

Such a bizarre take, he's not playing his first Aussie Rules game of the season lol.

But we picked for needs not best player available and you shouldn't do that in the first round.
Gibcus was best available at pick #9 and was expected to be taken higher
NAS was a 60kg flanker nobody rated as a top 10 and Toce did well with that selection

What a load of absolute baloney. We were so desperate for tall key position players when we picked him and know for a fact the Aints would have taken him if we didn’t.
You’re a hindsight king with your view on his drafting. Yes, NAS has been great for the Aints but Gibcus was rated extremely highly in his draft, and will be a very good player imo.

Ok point taken but in hindsight we were horribly wrong.

I don’t recall NWM being mentioned as a potential draftee for us. We probably had Hobbs or Amiss or Ward on our radar if Gibcus wasn’t available. I wouldn’t lose sleep over any of those players. Forwardsight might show Gibcus becomes the gun CHB we drafted.

Gibcus needs to be happy with what he has done this season and take 3 months off and rest relax and get excited to come back to pre season fresh and motivated. Nothing to gain but everything to lose playing him in the VFL now on.

Just needs a full pre-season and an event free 2026, and in 2027 he is a fully mature 50 gamer ready to really assert himself on the competition.

But if he is keen to play VFL, and he is in the best available team, he should be playing. The more footy he plays the better.

No one had NWM as a better option than Gibcus in that draft

We didn’t reach for Gibcus in any way shape or form
My recollection was he was touted at the Suns pick (3rd open draft pick)

Plus at the time we desperately needed key position players and he was clearly the best option on both fronts

As far as picks go based on the info at the time and what we needed it was absolutely the correct call

Even after his 1st year before the injury roller coaster we were wrapped with how he was progressing
