Talking footy just broke a story saying that Salem has had a relapse of his thyroid problem. At worst could sideline him to 6 - 8 months. Club is confident it isn't that bad, but he will be out of the side for a bit none the less
Explains his lack of intensity. Its easy to be a knocker as a supporter but we have no idea what's going on in terms of injuries or personal issues. Ive bagge Cotchin a lot but I don't reckon I'd have the guts to play with a fractured cheekbone. Actually I know I wouldn't.
Hope he can take some time off and get on top of it. It's not great that it's a reoccurrence.

In response to my first post nevermind the length i said. Here is the report i saw on Talking footy

Sounds like some kind of hyperthyroidism, given the weight-loss. Treatment can vary from partial to full thyroidectomy, medication, radionuclide therapy. Depends on the nature of the problem.

f@ck it. I hope this isn't an issue that will continue to come back throughout his entire career.
If it does i'm calling it a Witches Curse

Didn't wanna say it but the curse of the MFC high draft picks is still real
Petracca Hogan and Salem have all basically missed seasons now
Brayshaw has already basically missed half a season this year an may not play more than t games

Thread title ninja edited. :thumbsu: (would have accepted: this is why he wasnt doing enough)

Just echoing the above, explains why he hasnt looked the same player in matches this year. His health is more important than anything to do with football. I hope he just forgets about the game and gets himself sorted for as long as it takes.

My partner had hyperthyroidism for a while - she was as flat as a tack. No energy, felt terrible all the time. She got it under control with medication very quickly - felt better within days. No way you can play AFL football with this condition, that's for sure. Just depends what the nature of the condition is, but I would be expecting him to play for quite a while.

Yep! Was sitting above the bench when Oliver limped off with his corked thigh... of course I started to think the world was coming to an end. Touch wood we can keep him healthy

This might be unpopular but I reckon when he comes back, even if it's 2017, we move him to half-forward/wing. I think it suits him better, we've seen him brush through and kick some nice goals before, and even before this news I've still had queries ove his defensive ability.

With Vince playing more in defence we still have that reliable kick out, plus I reckon when Brayshaw comes back he might get used behind the ball to start with, and then of course there's Melkshakes.

Agree. He 100% has all the attributes for a spot in our best 22, it's just about where.

His experience playing down back just adds to his flexibility to his game, and we need that - while premiership teams are healthy teams, there are always injuries and you need flexibility to handle that.

Hopefully he's right to go in 6 weeks - he's a great talent, I'd certainly hope he moves mid/forward when Melksham comes back in 2017.

I don't recall Yze having Thyroid issues?
Thankfully no. Got the apprenticeship at half back out of the way, can now start delivering to Hogan and co.

Yze from 1998-2002 was a class above Salem, but he fell away rapidly later in his career.

If Salem stays fit (and it's a big IF, thyroid issues, both hamstrings pinged, concussion, dropping bricks on own head etc) then he will be a star.
