Dylan Stephens
The Sydney Swans used their first pick five since Jarrad McVeigh in 2002 to lock in a talented midfielder from South Australian club Norwood at the 2019 AFL Draft. Dylan Stephens is a prolific ball-winner and creative user of the footy by hand and foot. He played predominantly on a wing in the early matches of the 2019 AFL Under-18 Championships before starring on the inside in the final match, gathering 33 disposals in a best-on-ground performance. A penetrating left-footer, he averaged 23.8 disposals and 4.8 tackles across the 2019 AFL Under-18 Championships and was rewarded with All Australian honours. He also played some excellent football at senior level with Norwood, averaging 18.2 disposals and 4.6 tackles in 12 matches. Stephens enjoyed a breakout season for the Bloods in 2020 with a memorable AFL debut in Round 6 against Richmond alongside fellow debutant, Chad Warner. Stephens finished the campaign with eight appearances, averaging 12.5 disposals and 3.4 marks per game, while also kicking two goals.

'It's not rocket science': Confidence, trust leads to Sun's rise - 'It's not rocket science': Confidence, trust leads to Sun's rise

Read this article about Sam Flanders and was struck by how applicable much of it us to Stephens. In particular this passage:

"The last couple of years I was sitting on the outside waiting for whether to go and get the ball or not, but the last month or so I've got a lot of trust from my teammates to play to my strengths and go in and win the ball," he said.

"It's all good and well to do it at VFL, but the step for me was to translate it to AFL level and I can take real confidence out of the last four weeks.

"It's not rocket science. It's just been keeping it simple and it's amazing what confidence can do."

Stephens needs to get to this point- it looked like he'd got there last year admittedly. But he's back to looking uncertain, lacking confidence.

I'm hoping we give him one last run this year to just throw himself at the footy and play with some abandon.

I think by this point though, after four years and numerous stints at the level, Horse & co are probably less inclined to make him the priority over other reserves players. He's now just one of them I think, like Rose, Robinson, Foote etc used to be.

Yet they were happy to gift game after game to James Bell

I’m tipping he’s probably regretting his decision not to go to the Pies 2 seasons ago, I can imagine Craig McRae would find the way to best utilise his talents

I'm tipping he would be a fringe player at every other team as well, aside from North and West Coast.

We need to stop blaming coaches for players underperforming. Stephens has every opportunity in the reserves to play in the middle and dominate. He doesn't.

He needs to lift, or he will go to another team and find himself in the exact same situation he is in with us.

I don't as a rule watch the reserves, but we were in Sydney on business the day we played Geelong, so got to the ground early enough to watch from qtr time. There were a few players I was particularly looking out for and Stevens was one of them.
In my (not that knowledgeable) opinion, whilst he wasn't bad, he wasn't good either, he was vanilla - very, very vanilla, that's the most apt term I can think of to describe what I saw of him in that particular game.

Great game as sub. All you can ask him to do, he's clearly still committed. Haven't quite given up on him yet. Good work Dyl!

aye… could not have asked for more

Yeah he got a few touches but can see exactly why he ain't getting a game. There was a contest towards the end there where he was chasing after the ball and he stopped dead because a couple of players were coming the other way - ball bobbled out and pretty sure it lead to the Toby goal.

Saw the exact same situation today when game was on the line hawks v pies. Hawthorn player was chasing the ball down and Bobby Hill came the other way - hawks player kept going, copped the hit and they won the ball back. It stopped a goal and they went on to put the game to bed.

Levels...

There's a player in him, just needs to mature more and throw himself around and use the ball with intent

Yeah he froze in one contest, but he did run hard when on. Is jmac out a few?

Stephens is a better sub than Clarke imo , But probably won't force Clarke out of the 22.

What i likes tonight was the effort and work rate in a limited opportunity.

Unlucky not to get the goal
