Ok, so I guess this is my new home away from home for 2009, hah. I hope that I can keep up with and make sure every piece of information that is published about our brownlow medallist boy Jimmy Bartel throughout the 2009 season.

Jimmy Bartel teams up with Nadia Coppolino

GEELONG footballer Jimmy Bartel has a new girl firmly established on his arm, and she likes to party. Bartel and Nadia Coppolino have been an item since October.

Sexy midfielder Bartel has let it slip that the two are an item, after stepping out together as friends at Geelong's best and fairest awards in October.

Insiders say the two make a cute couple.

They say Bartel and his new blonde started hitting it off after his Danish ex-girlfriend, Pernille Brodersen, returned to Europe in February.

It is believed the new couple met through Bartel's teammate Josh Hunt. Coppolino is a friend of Hunt's girlfriend, Ellie Pearson.

She graduated from La Trobe University last year, but also works as a promotional model and has been a host at a number of nightclubs, including Eve.

Coppolino was snapped strutting her best for Jim Beam bourbon at the Rip Curl Pro at Bells Beach in March.

She also paraded about at a movie premiere last year in a naughty police officer number.

Coppolino is a regular party-goer, listing herself as a fan of bars and clubs Onelove, Electric Ladyland and White Charlie on her Facebook page.

Gary Ablett, Joel Selwood and James Bartel step up

THE search for the leader of the next generation of Cats has officially begun.

Superstars Gary Ablett, Jimmy Bartel and Joel Selwood have been added to the club's leadership group with a view to one of them one day taking up the Geelong captaincy.

The plan to start grooming the trio for the coveted position came about after three of the current leadership group - Cameron Mooney, Paul Chapman and Max Rooke - indicated they wanted to step down.

This season is likely to be captain Tom Harley's last, with vice-captain Cameron Ling his logical successor for at least a couple of years before the baton is passed to one of the big three.

Ablett last year indicated for the first time that he held ambitions to one day captain the club, while Bartel has been working hard behind the scenes to improve his leadership qualities.

Selwood, who doesn't turn 21 until May, has been labelled a future captain by club insiders almost from the moment he walked into Skilled Stadium just over two years ago.

Mooney said the changing of the guard was crucial for the development of the team.

"If we are going to go anywhere the younger blokes are going to have to take control a bit more," he said.

"For the club to go further and take the next step again, we really need the younger guys coming through.

"It needs a new fresh look just to keep the ball rolling. 'Gaz' and 'Jimmy' are desperate to get in it which is exactly what you want to hear.

"And speaking to 'Sel', he is just a natural leader so we might as well get him in there if he wants to do it and we think he is ready."

Mooney, who turns 30 this year, denied the leadership group shake-up was a byproduct of the Cats' Grand Final disappointment.

"The last thing you want anyone to think is we are changing it because we lost and heads are rolling," Mooney said.

"That's not the case at all. For the whole club to go further, these younger blokes need to take on this role.

"There are going to be a few of us out of here in a year or two, if we don't give them the experience while we are still here, then who knows, they could fall in a heap.

"Nothing is going to change about the way we go about things because we're out of the group.

"You're going to get the same from us."

The Cats' leadership group was lauded for its role in turning around the club's fortunes in 2007, which ended in a record-breaking premiership victory.

Midfielder Joel Corey, Harley and Ling remain from that group with another player to be added - possibly defender Corey Enright - along with Ablett, Bartel and Selwood before the start of the season.

Not 100% Bartel related, but he cops a mention.

Former Cats say Cameron Ling should be next captain

THEY may be the club's two best players, but only time will tell whether Gary Ablett and Jimmy Bartel are captaincy material.

That is the opinion of two former Geelong skippers who agree the club should stick to its succession plan with Cameron Ling being the right man to replace Tom Harley.

Michael Turner and Andrew Bews both praised the changing of the guard in the club's leadership group which has seen midfielders Ablett, Bartel and Joel Selwood promoted.

The move has fuelled debate about who will be in charge of the next generation of Cats, with this season likely to be Harley's last.

"Ling is next in line and from my experience with him at the (Geelong) Falcons he was a real leader even back then at an early age," said Turner, who led the Cats in 1984 and 1986.

"And if you look at Nick Maxwell at Collingwood, the captain doesn't necessarily have to be the best player. Nick is clearly the best player suited for that job.

"Just like Cameron Ling is at Geelong and with the other guys (Ablett and Bartel) it is good to get them into the leadership group, give them a bit of a feel for it and in time a captain will emerge from there.

"To jump over blokes can be a bit unsettling. That happened during my time when Brian Peake was made captain after just 13 games in 1981 and the place fell apart."

Bews said Ling would become an even better player if made captain.

"He does all the right things and is a great example for others," Bews said.

"It might sound funny but Lingy would be an even better player as skipper. He would see it as his job to take this group forward.

"The club is in a great position because of the great talent they have in their leadership group.

"I mean other clubs who had Bartel or Ablett in there would be wanting to elevate them quick smart.

"Geelong doesn't have to do that."

Bews, skipper in 1990-91, said the Selwood situation was interesting.

"Wayne Carey was captain at 21 and it depends on the individual as a person's qualities sometimes take longer to develop," Bews said.

"Selwood has just seemed to slip straight into the system and is very much the dark horse in this whole debate."

Super Cat Jimmy Bartel continues to show why he is a Brownlow Medallist

ANY Dream Teamers put off by Jimmy Bartel’s cool $501,800 price tag might want to reconsider on the back of the Brownlow Medallist’s day out against Port Adelaide at AAMI Stadium on Saturday.

Bartel showed just why he’s the most expensive player in the League with a BOG Dream Team score of 118 in the 18-point win over the Power.

The star midfielder was allowed to roam free without a close tag for much of the day and capitalised with 28 possessions, five marks and a goal.

Bartel’s traditional Power opponent and DT favourite Kane Cornes also did as he pleased and racked up 31 touches for a return of 94 points.

Chad Cornes, whose price dropped because of injury last year, showed why he’s considered good value as a $379,500 defender, finishing with 99 points in his usual midfield role.

Cornes’ teammate Danyle Pearce also notched up 99 DT points. The dynamic midfielder only touched the ball 20 times, but picked up more points for disposing of the ball by foot 15 times and handballing just five.

Dual All-Australian big man Brendon Lade, who also dipped in form and price last season, continued his resurgence (70 DT points) and at $326,500 could be worth a look in the ruck.

Young defender Nathan Krakouer, who is being tried in Peter Burgoyne’s defensive sweeping role, could be another low-cost smoky after scoring 61 DT points against the Cats.

Geelong was without some of its biggest DT performers in Gary Ablett Jr and Joel Corey on Saturday, but there were plenty of players ready to step up.

Mathew Stokes, who dominated Dream Team with 30 possessions and three goals last week, continued his rich vein of form with another 21 touches to go with four match-winning majors.

The livewire forward is hardly a bargain-basement buy at $391,200, but he appears set more for time in the midfield this season.

James Kelly (88 DT points) and Shannon Byrnes (76) were two other mid-range onballers to take advantage of their teammates’ absence.

Brad Ottens barely troubled the statisticians with just 12 DT points in his first hit-out of the season, but he didn’t get much game time either.

Third-year fringe player Simon Hogan also looked the goods with 66 DT points and a price tag of just $86,600. But it remains to be seen whether he can crack into the Cats’ best 22 for the start of the regular season.

Toyota AFL Dream Team top scorers
Port Adelaide
1. Chad Cornes, 99
2. Danyle Pearce, 99
3. Kane Cornes, 94

Value bet: Nathan Krakouer, 61 (DT value $189,300)

Geelong
1. Jimmy Bartel, 118
2. Mathew Stokes, 96
3. James Kelly, 88

Jimmy Bartel: from hero to zero

Joel Cresswell

March 19th, 2009

GEELONG fans have been spruiking Jimmy Bartel's hero status for years, but one anonymous Adelaide woman can truly make the claim.

Bartel was too shy to relive the story on stage last night, so it was left to captain and accomplice Tom Harley.

They were driving through Adelaide the night before their NAB Cup match with Port Adelaide.

"We saw this guy strolling across the road. He looked out of it, off his dial, and it sort of looked like his girlfriend was picking him up (in her car)," Harley said.

"But Jimmy has got a bit of street smarts - or so he tells everyone - and he's read the situation really well.

"This guy's actually climbed into the car, has opened the door and went to assault this woman.

"She was screaming, 'Help me, help me, somebody help me!'

"Jimmy's got straight up, grabbed the bloke out of the car and has thrown him against the floor.

"This young lady drove off and we went our separate ways. It was an amazing act, really.

"After the heroic deed, our hero was thanked in, perhaps, true Adelaide style.

"Believe it or not, we were turning right and the people behind us were tooting, saying 'C'mon'," Harley said.

Gold Coast shoots for stars

http://www.news.com.au/heraldsun/story/0,21985,25217937-19742,00.html?from=public_rss

GOLD Coast will zero in on star Hawk Lance Franklin and top Cat Jimmy Bartel, among other out-of-contract players, in 2010.

The Queensland club's recruiting manager Scott Clayton said he had compiled a list of top-flight players who would be out of contract at the end of next year.

At the top of Clayton's shopping list are Hawthorn's Coleman medallist and premiership forward Franklin, and Geelong's Brownlow medallist and premiership midfielder Bartel.

Gold Coast will have the right to sign one out-of-contract player from every club.

Other possibles include Gary Ablett, Nick Riewoldt, Jarryd Roughead and Matthew Pavlich.

It will also have draft picks 1, 2, 3, 5, 7 and 9 and nine of the top 15 selections in the 2010 draft

Extract

THE ball was hit high to the outfield and Jimmy Bartel went for it. Coming the other way, also with eyes only for the ball, was his Collendina Cricket Club teammate — the Steve Waugh in this scenario to Bartel's Jason Gillespie. The ball started to drop. The pair closed in from opposite directions. Neither pulled out. Collision inevitable.
Mates on the field had the frozen expression of horror not dissimilar to the faces of Cats fans in the third quarter of last year's grand final. Bartel, like Gillespie, could break a leg or, like Waugh, get his face caved in. Then, with impact imminent the Brownlow medallist sidestepped, missed his teammate, stuck out a hand and took the catch rolling to ground. Catastrophe averted, but not injury.
"I had seven stitches in my finger. They call it a de-gloving — the top of the finger came off the bone, the whole nail and pad dropped down," Bartel recalled of the eventful November day when he resumed his once-promising cricket career.
"I have played cricket all my life and never had an injury — then I get this taking a catch in the outfield … it could have been a lot worse."
Bartel went off and, not wishing to trouble club doctors on a Saturday night, attended a 24-hour medical clinic. A doctor there, when confronted with his famous patient, was too scared to stitch the finger lest he botched the job (his reluctance was understandable — a lynch mob may not have been far from his door). Club doctors were called and a plastic surgeon repaired the digit the next day...

Re: Like a phoenix from the ashes - Geelong Board player review is back!

Jimmy Bartel , Geelong Board player review 14/10/2011

While I don’t think it was JB’s best year , as always , it not the quantity with Jimmy , it’s the quality.

When Ablett was piling up the stats with give and gets , I often thought that his best was when he touched it less and contributed more on the score board. A 70M goal or a clever shimmy that developed 6 points were worth more than 20 handpasse’s in my eyes.

And so it is with Jimmy Bartel. He is not someone who will get a stack of the ball but what he does get , he has probably earned. Not too many gifts and cheepies go his way, how often is the ball is just tossed up in the forwardline knowing he will fly and probably mark it over much taller opponents. I wonder if that’s what Ted Whitten was like? CHB,CHF and everywhere else. When I look at Jimmy I see a footballers, footballer. Its not the stats that I look at it’s the timing and the impact.

Who doesn’t love Jimmy? Like that Seinfeld episode , I find myself thinking , you have got to love “The Jimmy”. The girls would love to take him home to meet mum and the blokes would just love to have a beer with him. JB turns up in a rather unusual dress up on Mad Monday , and if it had been anyone else , I wonder if it would have got a louder reaction. He is forgiven because he is Jimmy Bartel.

But its on the field that is his house. He’s the problem solver , almost like the “Bill Murray” of the Cats .. “Who you gunna call?” Regularly a player would be missing , rested or injured and its was Bartel asked to fill the breach. Some footballers are a Jack of all trade and Master of none , but Bartel is very close to a master at most.

But its not just his proficiency that strikes me, its his propensity to rise to the occasion. Like the first game this year. Pretty ordinary match and most watching that game would have given long odds on us being Premiers but when something was required Jimmy found a way to kick a miraculous goal , without which we wouldn’t have won that night.

To understand Jimmy Bartel , one need only look at his GF in 09 and 11. In 09 when Hayes was going crazy in the first Q , who stopped him? And then this year , when the Pies where making a run , who stood up? That vision of Jimmy in the middle 4 or 5 Pies jumpers will stay with me for a long time. Surrounded & outnumbered yet he still got the ball out and we scored. That’s just gutsy, gritty football , more atune to someone like Rooke not a player with the class of Bartel.

Jimmy B has always been a great mark for his size and that one in the GF is just so typical of Jim. But what really sets him apart from several other good marks is his ice cool temperament. After taking a grab to waste it can deflate. He rarely does that. The slots the goal when needed. When the heat is on is when players are judged and those who perform are match winners. Yet he looks so relaxed, in those situations, its just so natural for him. He doesn’t get too fazed by it, he just does it and does it well.

What I do find amazing is he has never won a B&F , as he is a very fair player and to my eyes close to the best. He recently signed a 4 year deal that will probably ensure he is a one club player. 4 years for most players at his age may seem a bit ambitious but Bartel could quite easily develop into a very solid backman/forward in his later years. His versatility again being his calling card

Bartel for Capt , Id like to see that but it probably wont happen. Still he is a leader our Jimmy , and no matter his title he is a leader of our football club.
Great year Jimmy , 3 times Premiership player , Norm Smith winner and a loyal Geelong Champion.
