So we matched the Hawks in all the key stats including inside 50s. Anyone else think delivery and converting our opportunities might be an issue ?

Well yah.

It also shows how useless stats can be to describe the game and players if taken in isolation and divorced actuality and nuance.

20 possessions at 80% sounds great until you see what occured. Same as last night. We were not beaten. We were slaughtered the same old way all over again and stats be damned.

1. Defence a problem
2. Decision making and executing skills is bottom 4 standard.
3. Better now than September

Not going to be easy from here but there is a brand of football in this club that can trouble Hawks. I agree the media pieces about us matching unsociable footy was a bit shit and embarassing.

Important that they can lift the mood during the week. Will be feeling shit.

Horse will make the right calls from here and it'll be closer in September.

But geeez he looked a defeated man. Let it burn boys and develop accordingly.

Nankervis and Jones got to see the standard is a positive.

But geez, the role the kids are getting under horses game plan is constricting.

Questions around the game plan are justified

You need to score Bloods

BJ was cleaner than many, aggressive and cool enough under pressure. He needs to get more ball but there were plenty of players who did get more and made an absolute dog's breakfast of it.

He can't kick, why are we playing yet another player than has average or below kicking skills. It is something that is annoying with our selections. We need more players that can kick not less.

Agree with you and bung in a way

Need players who can kick

But if the senior blokes cant do their job, hard to hold bj to account

To a degree but I don't feel he will be any more than average. Would rather try Hiscox is we want some outside speed or Hewett or even Marsh, etc in the backline.

Something is off though about all this hard man shenanigans.

We need to be rock hard and ruthless as #1 challenger

But we can't get it into the group and we can't believe it so our finishing skills go to shit against the Hawks and our defenders run into each other at will.

It's so bad that a kid like Jones shows some spark and its the loudest thing a Swans player did all night.

It's a serious case of alpha vs. beta against the Hawks this week I felt.

We can reset

Yeah i wouldnt of picked him

But i dont know id drop him now

I would, and I would play Hiscox this week too, maybe as the sub. Ideally, Kieran Jack forward (for good), Hewett in the centre.

Id almost drop k jack.. :p

I just dont know who goes out this week or in, esp until we see who is fit

Don't get me started on Kieran Jack, although as I have been saying since last year....he could work as a forward. In fact his tackling pressure would be immense.

We badly need Heeney and McGlynn back ASAP

Sad isnt it

Gotta get the 18 year old back to save us

What is even more sad is that at 18 years old he is the best kick in our whole team. We need blokes that can kick, and build a side around it. Nowadayds turnovers kill you, we don't need midfielders that kick it straight to the opposition. I almost feel sorry for our defenders (and yes they have been horrible)....but how can you stop half the entries that are caused directly by our midfielders butchering the ball!

Agree effort was there for first 3 quarters hence the even stats with Hawks.
Gameplan might be able to get better by finals if we start changing things NOW.
Unfortunately poor skills and footy IQ will mean we will only beat Hawks if we play a blinder and Hawks stuff up. We arent good enough to play slow tempo footy anymore and the game has changed since our GF wins.

Tippett at FF and Franklin at HF is logical but it hasnt worked with Tipp. Who else can go there? Goodes got most poss up the ground. Reid can mark but shanks half his kicks so prefer him elsewhere. Chuck Parker and Jack up forward.
Hanners aint All Australian. Hope Kennedy can find form with his kicks cause he has the skill.

Not for the first time, some extra keen mod shut the game day thread before I got to watch the game. We actually dominated the first 5-10 minutes but shat the bed.

Do you think the Ted Richards hit was some old school evening up?

Looked more like an old guy forcing rough stuff that is not his go and being hopelessly out of form and timing got it wrong.

That corking campaigner accentuated it for all he was worth as well.

The first quarter was reasonably even everywhere except the scoreboard. The forward entries were average, yes, but the ball came out way too easily too. Should have been a goal down at worst.

Was interesting to see the umpires pay free kicks for the rough stuff. Would have liked that in the GF, maggots.

Rohan
Heeney
McGlynn
And Towers
All out.

This group provides defensive pressure and goal opportunities for us ....

If you look through rose coloured glasses there may be an upside.

1. We can't win against Hawthorn, but Hawthorn can lose against us. 23.8 vs 9.15 - bad kicking is bad football.

2. Nanka will be a good player for us. Ok in the ruck, and moved well around the ground. Actually has some footy IQ.

3. Small forwards, we need them. The midfield experiment is over, get dedicated fwds in there to crumb. Midfielders ostensibly go there to rest, but the ball is coming back out so quickly that they have to run anyway and are exposing their colleagues and defence on the rebound.
