Yep, we haven't that kind of roaming CHF since W80 left.

Larkey is best utilised as a close to goal KPF.

He's excellent one on one when the ball comes in quickly over the top. He's also a deadly set shot out to about 40m.

Comben strikes me more as the get up the ground, hit the logos type CHF who will crash packs and bring the ball to ground even if he doesn't take the mark.
Yep to all that.

Fingers crossed hey.

He's supposed to have a booming kick too, right? That was always a little problem with the Brown and Larkey combo. Both were better off playing deep since neither really had the distance 45+.

Brown kicked some outside of 50 but he certainly wasn't comfortable at that range, there is of course a difference between roosting the ball 50+ and being able to stick it between the sticks in a reliable fashion. I think generally speaking AFL produces more reliable smaller 50+ goal kickers, those used to being able to kick on the run. Someone like Ziebell didn't follow through with his kicking action until he was 45+ out, I think he could have developed to be a good 50+ goal kicker if he set his mind to it but he didn't seem to be fond of being a forward.

Yeah, that long goal after the siren in his debut a good example.

As you say, it is another point of difference with Larkey and our wider forward set up as it stands.

The biggest benefit if Comben really comes on is that his athleticism allows us to be able to play a 2nd ruckman rotating through the forward line (CCJ) without becoming too immobile.

Agree... I'm sure that's what nobes is targeting... larkey cj comben all in the same team and will provide a lot of headaches for opposition defenders.... and best part of it is Zurhaar will get the 3rd or 4th best/tallest def.... he was getting the 2nd best for most of last year

That is it in a nutshell. If we assume that Larkey can be the consistent 50 goals kicker going forward, we can't really play the three talls Brad Scott style in today's footy, especially given our inability to hold the ball in the forward half. The only way we can overcome that is to have combination of a second ruckman and a really mobile roaming second tall who is not a Larkey type. Comben could well be the answer.

It embiggens the heart to see a North player, let alone a really tall one, show such marked physical improvement.

It's quite funny that.

Sam Durdin had the exact same frame as Comben in his draft year, but took him 5 full pre-seasons to show even a little bit of physical development.

Whatever we are doing with our nutrition/weight programming is obviously working. I just hope they find that perfect balance between getting stronger and still being able to cover the ground well.

You'd think with all the turnover in the conditioning staff ranks over the offseason, the improvement in several players' visual condition is more down to a higher and more defined set of expectations from the coaches rather than our hands on S&C coaching.

A fascinating player. Great height, flourishing build, seems a really sound kid and very competitive on-field. Looks to be footballer first but with nice athletic attributes.

Queries:
  • Durability
  • Best position?

If fit, plays Round 1 imo.

Reckon the forward structure is still a work in progress so he, CCJ and Larkey will all need to find their way with each other until hopefully it clicks.

Dunno about durability.
