Player Profile

In an indication of Tom McCartin’s rapid rise, the young Sydney Swans forward had played 34 AFL games by the end of his teenage years – and that was despite being the youngest player in the league in his debut 2018 season. The Geelong Falcons product has a brilliant marking ability and presents a tall target inside 50, although coach John Longmire has also used him as a key defender. McCartin is the younger brother of number one 2014 AFL Draft pick Paddy, who played 35 AFL games with St Kilda.

Tom McCartin

DOB: 30 December 1999
DRAFT: 2017
RECRUITED FROM: St Joseph's (Vic)/St Joseph's, Geel (Vic)/Geel Gram (Vic)/Geel U18

The commentators were talking like the "in the back" in the marking contest was some recent interpretation change. They were all for it, especially Dermott.

If it's a genuine push then fair enough, but not if the defender is just steadying himself for the mark.
Funnily enough in the Geelong game today when Cameron did it, Dermott said that was fine because he was steadying himself. Total contradiction to his comments during our game 🤦‍♀️.

I'd really like to see us bring in another KPD and have Tom play more as an intercepting defender.
Been saying that for yonks, but do we need to bring one in?
I wanted Edwards to come on as the second KPD, then for Hamling to take that role so that Tom could do that. Then there's Snell. Forget Francis or Andrew.
The issue is then we have another "tall" in Blakey who doesn't much play tall (though he did more so yesterday) and we don't want to be "too tall".
I think we have what we need, although drafting one for the longer term might be smart.

Yeah, it could definitely be done without bringing another one in. Hamling is the only player I see as capable of doing it right now, with maybe Edwards or Riak in the future.

Regarding Blakey - I only think being too tall is an issue when all your talls are slower, which isn't as much of an issue with him.

I think the one to be squeezed out with a setup like this would be Rampe which is going to happen soon anyway.

Ideally we'd have something like

McCartin Melican Wicks
Cunningham Hamling Blakey

Mills can obviously play there as well depending on match ups.

Yep. Need a seventh for rotation. Mills at the moment but if we return him to the midfield then Roberts or Bice for mine, though some might have Florent. Cunningham has a limited future but still going well. Wicks has come from the clouds. Still want to see Edwards and Snell come on to be good cover and replace Hamling.

Congratulations to 150 good ones 🎉

Unlikely imo because his foot skills aren't the best and the role sort of lends itself to then taking the aggressive option

That's a really good point that I hadn't considered actually. If you're gonna be the Weitering/McGovern interceptor you need to have the skill and confidence to go attacking and quickly. McCartin is a really good interceptor but I don't think he's that guy with ball in hand. That's why Blakey being the interceptor looked like such a good option in hindsight because him attacking off of his intercepts would be so damaging but it also drags him too deep that limits his run.

30/12 No.30. Tom Mc is looking strong and fit this preseason. Always the obvious injury hanging over him. A big season from him is integral to our fortunes. We know his best is good but can he get better, or as others have said in other threads , can he be more to the team as an interceptor . Will he be better with someone intercepting. ( My preference)
Looking forward to see the backline unit this year with more potential options and depth.

We don't really know how Serong might go as an interceptor but of our existing talls (including Blakey in this case) Tom is easily the best judge of the flight and mark or spoil AT AFL LEVEL.
Agree 100% on your last para.
