Player Profile

In an indication of Tom McCartin’s rapid rise, the young Sydney Swans forward had played 34 AFL games by the end of his teenage years – and that was despite being the youngest player in the league in his debut 2018 season. The Geelong Falcons product has a brilliant marking ability and presents a tall target inside 50, although coach John Longmire has also used him as a key defender. McCartin is the younger brother of number one 2014 AFL Draft pick Paddy, who played 35 AFL games with St Kilda.

If I never hear the term "All Australian" again it would be too soon.

I'm just pleased we're getting some consistency out of McCartin.

I feel like having Mills & Rampe together down back has also kept our structures in-tact, which has benefitted all the defenders really, but especially McCartin.

I'd be interested to know how much influence Rampe and Mills had over Edwards' performance. On-field leadership so important.

I'd imagine quite a lot. Pretty rock solid defence to be finding your feet in.

It's going to be really interesting to see if Edwards is picked again over Melican and Hamling. My guess is yes. Only change will be Heeney for Cootee. We will need our best side.
My question mark on Edwards is whether the Dees have sufficient talls to justify his spot - Fritsch and Mihocek feel like poor match ups for him, which leaves Van Roo.

Worth remembering that the talls taking the more contested work is what frees up the likes of Blakey, Wicks, Mills, Bice, Serong etc. to do more of the rebounding stuff.

I would definitely have him lock down on Van Rooyen who is a very direct player. Fritsch is sneaky rather than fast or a high mark so I think Mills would be a good match up. The other tall is newbie Jefferson at 195cm. Perhaps Tom takes him and Rampe on Mihocek. Easier to zone off.

Good let him fly under the radar.

Tom McCartin
Tom has a knee ligament sprain following the match against the Bulldogs and will undergo short period of rehab. 2-3 weeks

I blame the fact media got all over him :(

geez, that sucks ... although suddenly we have readymade replacements ...
and i guess it means edwards definitely stays up

Very lucky to have Melican be able to slot in and now big Will gets an extended opportunity. Could be far worse!

If we’re losing to the likes of Melbourne, North or Collingwood because of one key back then I’d be disappointed seeing as our mids should be limiting the supply well enough to limit the damage.

Not playing confirmed to me even more he is a superstar
Yeah. His absence was noticeable today. I think many aspects of our game were slightly off today, but our leaky defence was the most troubling. Edwards and Melican did ok on their opponents but we were missing that tall presence that has commanded the air in our back 50.
