Player Watch #31: Josh Goater - re-signed until the end of 2026

Should have put him on ice 5 weeks ago when he strained his quad during a routine warm up.

That was not time to be alerted but alarm bells should have been going off at how he wasn’t able to handle any loading.

I think for the kids mental head space, the club reassures his list spot for 2026 and I would give him extended leave now. Encourage him to get away overseas and go some place warm and switch off.

Then get him back here in a couple of months time and attack rehab refreshed.
There’s 2 things that could happen.
1:He overcomes the latest setback plays out the season the VFL with a possibility of playing 13-14 games depending how deep the VFL side goes so let’s he plays 10 of those games give a bit of confidence going into 2026.
2:Let’s say it put him on ice tell him to go on a holiday give him the Braydon George Deal.
Just a real shame this has happened to this guy so much potential

There it is.

NEW ROO DEAL

NORTH Melbourne's Josh Goater will extend his stay at Arden Street for another season as he looks to overcome a rough injury run.

Goater has had a frustrating streak of injuries since rupturing his Achilles last season with some soft-tissue setbacks, including a re-aggravation of his quad strain last week as he was on the verge of a return.

But the athletic Roo, who was pick 22 in the 2021 draft, is set to extend his stay at Arden Street with a one-year deal to the end of 2026. He was due to come out of contract this season.

Goater played 10 games in 2023 as a medium defender and has played 12 games since arriving at North, but he is firmly in their plans as he overcomes the recent body troubles. – Callum Twomey

Trust the keyboard nutters on these BF forums :praying:

Will not be a popular opinion, but i like the club showing him a bit of loyalty, just like Brayden George, both young and talented, money doesn't come into it really, more a question of list spot's, a reasonably small investment that could pay off handsomely, come on Footy God's, give us a little boost.

Agreeing with a one-year extension isn't an unpopular opinion on here at all lol. I'm yet to see someone saying he should be delisted right now. He has too many attributes to discard just yet.

In saying that, his body does need to get its shit in order

Perfect.

"We’re hoping this new extension gives Josh the security and peace of mind he needs to fully focus on his recovery, and we look forward to him returning to play soon."

Good luck Goat!
This is well handled by the club.

If all else fails, maybe there is a career in medical science awaiting the Goat.

Youngster Josh Goater's recovery timeline is 4-5 weeks after he suffered a setback in his return from quad/hamstring issues last week.

White said Goater had "bounced back really well" from the minor quad issue.

"He had a strong week of conditioning and skill work and is attacking his rehab with great energy," White said.

"The plan will be to look for a strong fortnight of controlled footy conditioning to then prepare to merge into group training.

"He has a lot of kilometres under his belt, and has made significant strength improvements in the gym. He just needs continuity (across) the next month to set him up for game preparations."

I don't mind us persisting with players even though are made of paper (Chom, tarrant etc)

But I don't get it with players like Goater and even Bergman etc

He hasn't shown anything but flashes of ability but then its windy and it snaps his back In half lol they have shown zero evidence that they have a body or the physicality to play AFL. We give these players too much leeway IMO and have done for so many years.

Sometimes it works out no doubt but hope we don't become a charity because we are a nice club that has faith. Sometimes we got to be real as harsh as it is.

Guessing it may have something to do with:
DRAFT CONCERNS

Club recruiters fear that this year’s national draft – and the Victorian draft pool – is one of the weakest in memory in a year where Richmond and Essendon have multiple first round picks.

I doubt anyone would be upset, we'd have been mental not to extend him. Lucky for us we've plenty to delist. :)

2 post's before yours doesn't seem too happy :)

I didn't read that post, have no issue with it fyi. I think he's worth persisting with. He can find the ball his stats after 12 games are rather impressive. Really 11 games I suppose.

11 games - 2400 plus metres gained, 17 tackles, 171 disposals, 52 marks. He can find the ball, and looking forward to him and Hardeman running the lines off the HBF's. Could be a game changer.

Archer Logue Daniel
Hardeman Comben Goater.

The above is 5.2 out of six all things being equal.

Not heaps unhappy just don’t want us to become a charity. Even Brayden I thought that was a massive risk and we gave someone a contract extension just based on potential talent. He never even played AFL. Again, he is looking to be the correct decision though but who knows.

The only reason I say this is because of our horrible track record or having an eye for talent lol giving contracts or extensions when they maybe can’t even sustain or playing at AFL level.

Wtf would i know though haha Im just spitballing. Goater’s constant injuries and the type they are, are we ever going to get our return on investment if he doesn’t ever get fit?

Plenty of other teams giving kids time with injuries, like Tigers with Clarke and Gibcus.
Big difference in athleticism and speed between Goater and Bergman. Bergman likely gone on numbers.
Josh has got a year and a half to get back playing footy, then at AFL level or he's probably gone next year.

I know where you are coming from on this. If we were struggling for list spots, Josh could be in trouble. But we aren't. There are a heap of players we can delist first who don't have Josh or Brayden's potential.
