Autopsy 31 point loss to Collingwood

Would be nice if we kicked it to the forwards advantage for often (McLean's sitters aside). 3-4 times Ladhams was 5-10m over the back of Frampton, either on a counter or from a stoppage, so our mids drop it 10m in front of Frampton.

Elliott is in the exact same position for them and they kick it beautifully over the top so he can mark it.

Just far too many skill errors in crucial spots and moments, especially from senior players.
The reason is pressure. They hand passed to the player created a free player and kicked to the forwards advantage. Our handballing frequently missed the player and we were just trying to get it forward under pressure. When that happens you have to play in front because the midfielder simply can’t get the penetration or accuracy on a kick

Positives?
Heeney, Florent, Sheldrick & Bice is composed.
Negatives?
Rampe & Hamling in trouble. McCartin & Blakey cannot defend.
Grundy no influence for the amount of hitouts won.

Rowbottom sorry is overrated as
Disagree he's overrated but he has dropped off MASSIVELY this year. Don't think being makeshift captain is doing him any favours.

Awful game to watch, Pies worked out the gameplan and we had no answers to it. Block the corridor and you win. It's our main method to score because we can't win clearances.

Assuming Amartey is out, easy switch for McDonald.

Hamling not the worst but unfortunately for him there's a better player that plays his position to come in, Melican

Gus is frustrating with his ball use but he tries hard and is our best chance at winning a centre clearance, so I'd drop Lloyd for McInerney.

Pretty ordinary display. I guess we kept in it but for 90% of the Collingwood had our measure. Not much went right and even when things were moving it was it always felt like something was going to go wrong.

Positives - Heeney was outstanding, Grundy was very good too. It was probably Florent's best game all season. Liked Cleary's game too I guess.

Negatives:

That defence. For large parts of the second and the third quarters it felt like whenever Collingwood got it in they were likely to score. Rampe has to go, while Hamling isn't it. Lloyd's gotta be on thin ice and I'd be tempted to move Blakey around, he's badly out of touch. While Roberts will be a player he needs to cut out the bad turnovers quicksmart.

Forward connection. Admittedly stuff like McLean dropping sitters and Lloyd and Campbell missing not super tough shots when the momentum was clearly turning our way didn't help, but there were a lot of burnt players or miskicks. It admittedly didn't help that the one forward that has presence got hurt.

Frustrating from Warner, he wasn't awful but he really needed to step up like Heeney did, and he didn't. After the Freo game the last couple of weeks (though apparently he's been sick as a dog) have been underwhelming.

Bit of a reality check from Bice though he did improve as the game went on I guess.

Hayward seems back to his inconsistent worst after a cracker last week.

Overall it seems that we're in that 7-12 bracket this year, at least until the stars come back. There will be some good performances but we're definitely a way off the best.

So far from our problems tonight.

Actually had an impact in the midfield which most senior players didn't besides Heeney.
Agreed. His skills (or lack thereof at times) shit me but he cracked in tonight and his ball use got better as the game went on. Showed more than Rowy and Chad tonight IMO.

Disappointing, thought we'd gain some cohesion and confidence with the win last week. Well beaten by a good team that tactically outplayed us.

The gulf either sides defenses was far too big. Pies mopped up well and exited out their D50 far too often. Whilst we looked lost at sea when they worked their slick hands. Our defensive intent at ground level in the back 50 was poor, just like OR.

Out pressured and hunted, they gave us no options in the corridor and we could barely chain possessions that well after QT. Centre clearance work was a let down. Time and time again they'd walk it out.

Belted in the air just like the Hawks game. 1 contested mark is pathetic.

Heeney great in and under, carried us. Liked some of Cleary's efforts, but the forward group collectively struggled to lock the ball in.

A game where we got schooled in tonight, still early days with a new coach so plenty to learn off this game.

Bizarre thing is, Gus spent the 4th quarter either on the bench or forward. He didn’t attend centre bounces.

It tells me he’ll be dropped, which I view as unfair given he put in a solid performance & the shockers some of our senior players had.

We just have to try and hold 50-50 or slightly above as best we can until we get troops back .

Rightly or wrongly not good enough to match it with the best with those guys out.

Heeney simply awesome the rest a mix of ok to ordinary.

Mcrae just shut us down

Rampe looks cooked.

Blakey is abysmal this year .

Warner Jr, Hanily, Cleary etc i don't expect much, just do a role and I feel like too often Campbell is still in the same boat.

Mclean kicked 3 but was a liability imo .

our inability to take a contested mark forward or even bring it to ground cost us was probably the 30
point difference really .

So, so, so much the bolded. I never want to hear about Amartey being useless again. He's our most important forward, I don't care what anyone says.

Imo Hayward is and Paps maybe, and Hayward just can be a non factor like tonight

Our inability to win the one on ones and the lack of run, in particular out of defence left us bereft of options once the Pies blocked up the corridor. Compounding this was the poor marking inside 50 and the even poorer defending in defensive 50.

Many of our senior players who we need to lift given our current injury toll went missing. Rampe, Lloyd, Florent, Hayward, Rowbottom, Chad (looked like he couldnt give a sh*t) and Blakey were either poor or conspicuous with their lack of impact. McCartin and McLean couldn't catch a cold tonight (although cracking goal by Hayden). Hamling lost too many aerial contests. If not for the efforts of Heeney, Grundy and a few of the youngsters, the scoreline would've been really ugly. All up, a very disappointing outing.

Rowbottom bloody awful.

He has a shocking habit of making it someone else's problem.
1 metre handpasses to a stationary target, otherwise get it, kick it, without looking.

206 metres gained from 22 disposals, 2 centre clearances, when he was essentially an ever present in the middle.
And even with the 1 metre handballs he had the worst disposal efficiency of anyone on our side.
His main opponent in Long, 29 disposals, 6 centre clearances (most on ground) and over 500 metres gained.

Yay 10 tackles.

Jordon who was handy tonight again but he and Rowbottom in the centre bounce together doesn't work well enough for it to nearly be a permanent fixture.
It results in Chad being marooned on the HFF and leaves far far too much to Heeney, who starred tonight.
Although Chad may he carrying a rib injury?

Shame we let go of Darcy Cameron, he was so dominant tonight.

Dont want to see McLean in that side again. He’s hopeless, proves it week in week out. Yes kicked two goals, me from a ruck free kick and a Joe the goose and the back.
Ladhams is like a 200cm headless chook, Amarty, just wildly inconsistent.

So right here it’s obvious we have the 3 worst talls in the afl. Can’t take a grab, get bullied in ruck contests, what’s the point?

Florent again 0 impact, but let’s keep wheeling him out.
Hayward, big game so standard is he folds like a target deck chair.

Got to get games into Sheldrick and Cleary in the middle, Rowbottom a genuine battler, Warner playing mostly forward and we have a tagger in there so someone has to step up as a contested ball winner.
Yes Sheldrick poor disposal but he needs consistent games to get used to the speed on the AFL then his efficiency will improve.

All in all the same faces just proving they aren’t up to it when pressed by the better teams.
When denied the corridor, what’s plan B Cox?
