Flies in the face of the whole selection integrity notion from Yze TBH. Don't reckon he'd be coming in if we were playing against any other team in the league (bar Norf).

Dont think the Match Committee has ever shirked picking a player against any specific opposition. If this was against the Lions or Pies or anyone else, think he still gets selected.

The Match Committee seem to - especially for the first year guys - use aerial contests halved/ % of ball brought to ground as the yard stick for selection.

Faull and Armstrong both debuted on less than stellar form, but both did the little things and competed strong in the air. Didn’t dominate aerially against Box Hill, but he never ‘lost’ a contest (when out of his way to halve them).

Gray and even Blight played much better and can chop out in the ruck.

I’d never have dropped Blight personally, but at some point you have to get players playing the position that you think they’ll have to play to make it at AFL level. Dont think for either Gray or Blight that’s the second ruck position.

They are just giving the young bloke a taste like they will Alger and Hotton and Smillie even if they are not flying. Unless he gets a lot of it I expect him the plan is for him to be out of the team next game

Extremely encouraging debut. Kinda hate watching the big boys play so early because there just isn’t much they can do before they put on the size to compete. But big Tom halved every single contest that he needed to and didn’t get beaten once in the air.

First act on the field was a 1v1 that he punched forward and ended up in a goal. Second was a bit of a squib kick forward that was on target and resulted in another goal.

Stays in the team for me.

Great that he got the first game out of the way and scored a goal.

Definitely needs to stay in the side! Has a good presence and I’d much rather him as our back up ruck than kamdyn or anyone else.
