In this train-wreck season in the worst year for humans in decades, there are still shining lights. This is another of them. Can't wait to see Flynn out there - good luck, young man.

Look, I'm guilty of over-optimism about our upcoming season every single summer, but by God we're going to be good next year. I can feel it.

C'mon mate, it's a marketing exercise.

I just hope the kid gets through unscathed.

Ready to go The acurate one ? Taking the Ferrari out for a test run.....

Yep really looking forward to this , hope he doesn't show up his team mates with his kicking skills off either foot. This fella will be a steal for us and a big piece of our jigsaw puzzle from next year on wards.

And yes he could have a quietish game on debut and that's ok. But I don't think he will tbh.

It's a marketing exercise, sure. At a minimum. It also gives him an early taste, which can only be good for him (and us).

You KNOW that the football illiterates dick heads that infest this place will turn on him the moment they imagine something that doesn't fit their narrow little world view.

I always prefer them to be fully developed & kicking down the door, with a view to coming in and cementing a spot.

It's highly likely to be 2022 at least before Flynn achieves that, and you know how they turn on them around here.

I don't mind giving him a few games over the balance of this year. If we have a full list of fit players come round 1 next season he will probably have to rack up some solid games in the VFL (or whatever comp we have available). it would be a great sign if he was still pushing hard for selection when the full list is available.

Of course you don't mind. You're curious about a player you are otherwise clueless about.

However, you're also a bit more measured than most and don't tend to be too quick to judge.

Look no further than Joel Crocker, there's people posting ridiculous stuff about him based upon nothing more than they haven't seen him and assume that means he mustn't be good enough.

Take it as read that wingers/half backs & forwards & pocket players usually take at least 2 years to be ready for AFL, KPP's 3+ years & rucks can take at least 4-5 years. Inside mids can take 3-4 years also.

The only kids that usually jump out the gates are midfielders with high speed/endurance (Speed = Stephenson, now coming back to the pack at a rate of knots) or unusual physical development (size+endurance = Rowell) and (endurance = Walsh).

Of course, debuting early in a strong side also makes a young player look a lot better, there's a few in the Hawthorn side who have been found out, and some of the Geelong kids that will also be found out.

I'm happy to trust that we have the right people (Brady and Co) to assess Crocker for what he truly could be rather than what he has achieved in one season of VFL and one of mickey mouse scratch matches. I have seen you are bullish on him.

Don't disagree with any of that, but I am not unhappy that we have compromised the "kicking down the door" criterion in the current circumstances.

I also hope he's in the frame for 2021 selection, but more than happy to wait a couple of years, too.

He's ready when he's ready mate. There's no blueprint for all players, just generalisations that ring true after many years of watching the game. Going by his physical development this year, a big preseason and continual growth along with performance could very well see him entrenched next year. I just don't want to see another series of seasons of injury list carnage, and I reckon he is playing now for token reasons.

I mean, if we're going to mothball our best assets then why not Flynn also?

Anyway, it's done now. I hope to see him handle the heat well and come out the other side better & unscathed. I couldn't care if he only gets 3 kicks, as long as he's in good nick.

Shaw: Flynn is a really exciting talent. He’s a running defender and really exciting talent. He’ll take the game on, and I can’t wait to see him get his first touch.

I'm right there with ya buddy. Roll on 2021. And roll on Saturday with Flynn in the ins.

Yep. If he does get three kicks that would still be 3 more than Nick Larkey amassed in his first game from 75% of game time and now some are saying he is our best KPF. Finish the game fit and healthy and anything more is a bonus.

Apart from Harding and Lovey, not much job security goes with #39

Nope. They're the only 2 players in the club's entire history to have it for 4 or more seasons. And Brady is really the only one to have it for any amount of time to forge out a significant career.

14 is the lowest number not to have been worn in one of the 4 premierships, then 38 and then 39. These 3 numbers haven't even been dusted off for a Grand Final, or saluted for a B&F and 14 got worn by a captain for one year, in 1936,
