First of all, Johnson and Khawaja weren't going to play anyway (Smith would have come in, both Maxwell and Henriques play), Pattinson would have been rotated and Watson was always going home for childbirth as I understood it for this test, so any punishment for me would have been a clayton's punishment.

What I will say is this, in my experiences through sport, university and in my practical assessments in the classroom when training to be a teacher, I found written assessments to be a waste of time. They would either be buried within unimportant clutter, been fodder for the shredder or thrown in the trash for journalists to rummage through. The best feedback I have not only given but also received is through verbal conversation or practical demonstration in front of a group. What should have happened is that the group after the test match should have gone away for 2 days to think about it, then come into a team meeting to discuss all the points as a team before hitting the training track. The idea had legs but to me the execution of both what they wanted to achieve and the punishments handed were done as well as their batting.

If they wanted some advice on how to play spinners, they should have just gone to Galle to watch Mohammad Ashraful and the Bangladesh batsmen. If so called minnows have no issues.....

if there are other serious off field breaches then they should just tell us what they were and who committed them and when.

Previous incidents where standards haven't been met sounds awfully bad until you find out it refers to some players not filling out their wellness reports.
Team sources said a number of players have not bothered to previously fill out forms gauging their level of health and well-being.

Jesus Christ. We're a laughing stock.

Many players delivered presentations in Arthur's room, while others provided feedback in email form.It is understood Watson and Pattinson planned to see Arthur yesterday. The coach said Khawaja and Johnson simply forgot to provide feedback.
Forgot? They could've at least told them their dog ate it.

lol..Ashes are gonna be a blast.

Players always talk about how they're at their best when they know their game. Players who know their game should be able to identify areas for improvement. In any professional environment, you need to be able to examine and reflect on your own performance and be able to explain how you can improve. Hell, I'm able to get 12 year olds to do it in class. It shouldn't be too difficult for multi-million dollar sportsmen to do it.

Now, the punishment seems very harsh. However, the severity of the punishment seems to indicate that this isn't just some random incident and that standards have been slipping for some time in the team. The reaction from a lot of people, not just on this site, seems to misunderstand just what is expected of professionals in this day and age.

Well said. Something is going on that we are not aware of and I hazard to guess this isn't the first time something has happened. They're professionals and if the coach has asked something of them, they need to complete it.

On the surface the punishment seems harsh. However something is up.

dearest cricket australia, im recently coming off a 75 in club cricket which was an innings of depth and class. im also handy with the ball with my medium fast seamers and will provide energy in field. no stress fractures as yet. perfect homework submission so i wont miss the due date. have a slight weakness with spin bowling, but so does half the side. call me maybe?

Improve on your punctuation and you will be considered.

If they thought they were big boys, they wouldn't have asked them to do something so pathetic to start with ;)

They have been terrible in the first two tests, have capitulated with little to no fight across the entire team. Management asks you to provide them with a few pointers on how you as a person and the team can improve. I don't give a flying heck who you are and what your record is...you just bloody well do it. Particularly when almost every one of them bar the captain has done sweet heck all whilst over there.

Apparently Watson is "considering his options".

I hope "****ing right off" is on his list.

Whatever you think of the worth of a homework exercise like that, and its likely marginal, these are adults in a supposedly professional environment. Watson has a leadership role.

The exercise would take 10 minutes to prepare and they had 5 days to do it. Year 7 students manage more comes deadlines than that.

As for Mickey Arthur, I hope he rents.

When I heard there were 4 players sacked for not doing the right things, I imagined they were out partying all night, etc, but I find out it's because they didn't fill out some forms. Give me a break!!!

I guess without these forms, the sports scientists wouldn't be able to pin point red zones ... which is very important to idiots like Mickey Arthur.

I couldn't believe Arthur's comment that he never doubted Watson's preparation as a cricketer, or as a person .... and yet he's been sacked for not filling out a form.

Give me strength. Is there anyone out there who can fix this rabble called Cricket Australia?

It was always going to be difficult to recover from the retirements of Waugh, McGrath, warne, Hayden and gilchrist and retain the dominance that we had in world cricket however we've been on a steady downhill slide that has now reached a new low

The task itself seems simple enough and the fact that four players couldn't be ****ed completing it is a poor reflection on them but the response is out of proportion on face value and points to broader problems within the playing group. Something smells and at its core is mismanagement of our national cricket team on a grand scale stemming back to CA's inability to back the team after the Sydney test against India all those years ago

Our batting depth is at its lowest in my memory and we haven't been able to develop any spin bowling talent with those showing some promise being woefully mismanaged by being thrown in at the deep end too early. Our fast bowling stocks are quite impressive but we can't keep them on the park despite or because of the best efforts of sports scientists

Dropping players for not handing in their homework is embarrassing as is the petulance of well paid so called professionals being unable or unwilling to complete a relatively simple task

There are some morons who follow cricket, both in the media and general public. That's all I'm gonna say.
what does Mickey Arthur's **** taste like?

Time for some cool heads, leadership support for Clarke, and to get rid of the ****head egotists.

- Cowan
- Warner
- Doolan
- Bailey
- Clarke*
- Haddin+
- Henriques
- Pattinson
- Siddle
- Starc
- Lyon

All well and good but no patto for this test, he didn't do his homework.

Who comes in for him?

Couldn't agree anymore, this bloke is your classic kid who takes his bat and ball and goes home, when things don't go his way! I think people forget that he has only 2 test centuries in 50 tests, that's only 2 more than Glenn McGrath made.

To get dropped for basically not doing your homework is very poor, but rules are rules and Watson should be doing these things as a vice captain, it's called leading from the front.

Whilst there are a few calling for extra flyins at this late stage not sure that it is worth it given the test starts on Thursday especially as Haddin has already been flown in and can easily play as a specialised batsman.

My take on the four:
Watson - should be stripped of the vice-captaincy. He is by far and away the worst simply because as vc he should be looking at this and discussing it with Clarke and Arthur anyway. It stinks of arrogance and shows he is unfit to lead his country, thus needs to be replaced immediately.
Pattinson - I think more fits the lazy schoolboy mold. Nothing sinister but as a professional athlete really should be making sure he takes part in match reviews and providing feedback. When you get paid as much as these guys you need to take some responsibility for improving results.
Johnson - I've always thought he was an idiot and this proves it.
Khawaja - is up with Watson for stupidity. He was in a prime position to replace Hughes who has been terrible or at worst get a recall for the fourth test when Watson went home for the birth of his first kid. Has let slip a golden chance for a recall and actions like this put at risk he chances of an Ashes tour.

Saw an interview on Fox with Greg Matthews who made a great comment - "Warne & MacGill didn't like the boot camps when they played. In fact they hated them and publicly criticised them every chance they got, but they still took part and made sure they did them."
