Past #5: Ben Jacobs - delisted after 64 NM games/10 NM goals - thanks Benny

I suppose this is what is called a conundrum - for all involved. Right now, all we can hope for is that he gets back playing next week and helps us to crack the finals. If he can manage that, I suggest the contract negotiation poles will no longer be apart.

North Melbourne and tagger Ben Jacobs not close to finalising deal for star tagger

NORTH Melbourne and Ben Jacobs are a long way from signing a new contract as the unlucky midfielder closes in on his return from concussion.

While both parties have been focusing on Jacobs’ health, it is understood there was a considerable gap in negotiations before the concussion problems flared.

Coach Brad Scott is “very optimistic” Jacobs will return next week after battling concussion symptoms since the Round 12 loss to Geelong.

Jacobs, 26, has been a late withdrawal three times and was recently ruled out indefinitely as his training program was cut down.

The Brighton Grammar product is in the final year of his contract and has evolved into one of the Kangas’ most important players.

“He’s a unique player,” Scott said earlier this year.

“We missed him last year. He’s not just a guy that goes to try to blanket the opposition.

“He was a very high possession winner as a junior and he can do that at AFL level as well.”

Since midway through 2015, the Kangaroos are 24 wins, eight losses (75 per cent) with Jacobs in the side and 14-29 (31.8 per cent) without him.

The Kangaroos will also enter the final few weeks of the season with Jed Anderson and Luke McDonald coming out of contract.

But that hasn’t stopped the club splashing cash at rivals with the Roos confident they can land Port Adelaide playmaker Jared Polec.

Power is expected to chase a ruckman and the Roos could deem Braydon Preuss expendable given Todd Goldstein’s resurgence.

Preuss, 23 is contracted until 2020 but said last month he was “p----d off” he had not played this season.

North also offered Jordan De Goey a $5 million five-year deal, which he rebuffed to re-sign at Collingwood.

It was expected that extensions for Anderson and McDonald would be rolled out before free agent Shaun Atley re-signed.

But while Atley committed for a further three years last month there have been no announcements for Anderson or McDonald.

In the past week the Roos have re-signed youngsters Paul Ahern (2020), Will Walker (2020) and Declan Watson (2019).

Anderson was expected to re-sign until 2020 before the delay. McDonald and the Roos are understood to be close to agreeing.

It is Jacobs who is viewed as the furthest from recommitting and he recently encountered the medical curveball.

Melbourne onballer Angus Brayshaw faced concerning concussion issues last year before rebounding in 2018 with career-best form.

That hot streak was recently rewarded with a four-year contract worth about $600,000 per season.

Bit of an inflammatory headline when the first two sentences are the only ones that directly address the contract issue, and even then extrapolated out of thin air.

Ben Jacobs is set to miss his eighth game of the season

TIME is running out for Ben Jacobs to overcome his concussion struggle, with the North Melbourne tagger set to miss his eighth game of the season.

Kangaroos coach Brad Scott says Jacobs, who has played just one game since round 12, is still experiencing concussion symptoms and is unlikely for Sunday's clash with Adelaide.

"While this week might be a stretch, depending on what he does today, we're still optimistic about the next week ... that speaks to how close he is to playing," Scott said on Thursday

I don't think it's weird at all. It's very serious though, as concussion is in many sports. The truth is no one has any idea what they're doing. Must be extremely stressful for everyone involved.

Wallet banging on about Jacob's like he is Ryan Crowley.

Wouldnt be a lot of interest lol If he had of been able to get on the park, would probably be one of the highest paid at the club now.
