Standout

Round 11, 2018 (versus Port Adelaide): Against his future club, Burton snagged 19 disposals and took 11 marks as the Hawks came from behind to record a three point victory over Port Adelaide in Tasmania.

Shocker

Round 5, 2018 (versus North Melbourne): Only 9 disposals and seemed to be shaken up by a bump on Shaun Higgins that left Higgins unable to play out the match and Burton facing potential sanction from the MRO (who subsequently found he had no case to answer).

Just as an FYI, please do not use this thread to pot the player or the club for trading Burton to Port Adelaide. This thread is purely intended to act as a time capsule of a review of Burton's performance as a Hawk during 2018.

Yeah very disappointing year considering his outstanding 2017. Think he will bounce back in 2019 on the way to what I think will be a 200-250 game career.

I wonder how much was Hodge not being back there, how much was him not picking up a different role with Sicily back there excelling and how much was things like the ankle and the Higgins bump

He improved as the year went on and played some of his best footy when Sicily was out of the side

Those 6 games when Sicily was out, we then saw the best of Burto.

He still didn't. He improved but again he was hardly an imposing player racking up big B&F votes. The fact that he finished 18th in the B&F despite playing 23 games reflects how he went this year. Mostly held his spot in the team on potential and based on his very good 2017.

I think he will be a good 200 game player off the half-back line for Port. I don't hold the fears others do about him becoming a gun midfielder - I just do not see it.

Definitely didn't reach expectations in 2018 - but not uncommon for a young player to suffer 2nd year blues after a very promising 2017.

I wonder if that bad ankle sprain/foot injury suffered in Round 1 hampered his season at all? Especially the early part?

I do agree that he did get better as the season went on and was just serviceable in 2018, not a stand out by any means. I was really looking forward to seeing how his role would develop in 2019, midfield time or a move forward.. I guess we'll now just have to see how the Power use him.

I'll be interested to see how Burton goes over at Port, see if he gets better, worse or stays the same.

I think we can expect Burton to get better at Port. He is still very young and so it’s expected that he will develop quite substantially over the next few years, regardless of the club he plays for.

We must also remember that Hawthorn likely didn’t trade Burton because we thought we had already got the most out of him or because he had no more upside. It was simply because we really wanted Wingard and Burton was an unfortunate casualty in that trade deal.

We shouldn’t judge our development system based on Burton’s career at Port, most people could already tell you that he will have a great career because he is a talented player who was taken with a relatively high draft pick. Some players will have good careers no matter what club they go to, and Burton might be one of them.

What we should judge our system on however, is the number of late draft picks, rookie draft picks and delisted free agents that we are able to turn into best 22 players. These guys are much more reliant on a club’s system than players like Burton because they don’t have the same raw talent.

Any club can take a highly talented kid and allow him to become a superstar. Only the best clubs can take low-rated kids and develop them into 200 game, premiership stars.

*p.s. I’m not accusing you of thinking this Snake, I’m just making this post in advance because I can already see people questioning our system/list management when Burton plays 200 games.

All very good points, think we traded him because we needed another Rioli type small forward more than we did a medium defender. Especially considering we already have Sicily, Hardwick, Glass and to a lesser extent Miles, Howe and Schoenmakers to fill the role if needed. Not a lot of depth in that small forward role if Puopolo or Bruest goes down.

Got chatting to a player recently about the wingard trade and he said that no one at the club was too upset about Burton leaving as we wasnt particularly well liked by alot of the group. Had a few stories of stuff that he did/said and If true I would have agreed. Clarko wouldn't have forcibly traded someone like that if it could divide the playing group.

Interesting watching games from last year. First viewing I was looking at what good Burton was doing. Now, tend to be more critical. He's better with the footy than contesting for it.

23 games @ 17 disposals is more than solid. Needs to improve, maybe he will, maybe not.

A little casual slander never goes astray. From #FutureCaptain to #ShitBirdExtraordinaire in one simple trade. I guess Cyril is lucky he was never part of a trade package.

I remember watching that vid he did with Harry where they're out for lunch somewhere....
It was really awkward viewing, and though Morrison doesn't come across as rocket scientist you can see and hear the dismissive ribbing he gives to Burto, not in a true buddy sense at all. Basically calls him dumb, up himself, only interested in how far he can get with girls, and laughs at Burtons' below mediocre knowledge/intellect.
When players respect eachother, that gets done kinda lovingly and with good nature. This wasn't IMO.

Don't think Ryan was ever the player many on here gushed at, but clearly had plenty of promise. The fact he didn't kick on after his rookie year, wasn't particularly good overhead, or what you'd call a shut down back means I don't think we will suffer in the backline and comfortably find his replacement.
Highly doubt Port will find Chad's replacement nearly so easily.

Ive been Burtons biggest fan from day one, has potential to be elite however Ive also seen ample evidence that hes a knob.

Was close with Hartung too.

Wayne Carey was arguably the greatest player of all time. Generally unintelligent, horrible character, disliked/resented among the playing group... tick, tick, tick.

Burton is still on his way to becoming a very good player. It was a very good deal for a player like Chad, though, and it was likely taken irrespective of Ryan's character. I refuse to scorn him as a player just because we traded him. For the next few years it will probably seem like Port got the rough end of the stick, but who knows after that.

Technically if its posted on this forum its libel. :)

But yes, anyone now coming out of the woodwork to potshot him or postulate on rumoured character flaws are quite simply assholes.

Was sad to see him go, but you just don't say no to a player of Chad's ilk when he wants to come... you just get it done.

Ryan Burton: pick 19 in 2015: an inspired and faith filled choice by Graham Wright
Year 1: a taste of his talent (a beautiful kick from the boundary line in the VFL, a few in the AFL).. then the Hawks removed the pins from his leg and took the time to get him right.
Year 2: brilliant. Tex Walker was one of the form forwards in the game in a club that was dominant and a kid beat him not once but twice during the year. McGrath was more consistent for the year and so got the Rising Star award, but Burto was the one with the most potential.
Year 3: for him his 2nd year in the AFL: he got the 2nd year blues (many players gets them). Was serviceable at best early but improved later in the year. Was clearly in Hawthorn’s long term plans.
Year 4: Pollywoffle: we will never know.

The trade having us lose Burton hurt many of us a lot. Gaining Wingard in the trade was huge: the Chad is a match winner. But will Wingard’s inclusion outweigh the loss of Burton and guys like Ely Smith / Riley Collier Dawkins / Liam Stocker (all in the frame of pick 18:given away) as well as Mozzie (in the frame of pick 40 matched: given away) only time will tell.

The last I saw of Burto he was in the middle of a group of 3 Hawks players chatting as they walked. Take that as you will.

Whilst doing a bit of research this year I accidentally stumbled upon what I call the Port 20%. This is when a player joins or leaves Port there is a 20% improvement/ decline in their stats. Impey, Watts, Rocky all recent examples of this. Here is hoping the trend continues with Wingard and Burton

If you read this forum enough, you"d know that there were rumours/murmours about Burtons character since long before anyone knew he'd be traded.

1. I do read this forum, a lot. Was reading it for years before I finally joined.
2. First time I am hearing about them is after he leaves.
