Considering that this is the Fitzroy Board, and also considering that Fitzroy are still in operation - is it better that we keep this board "Roys only", rather than a place to 'bag' (for want of a better word), the AFL (or whoever else for that matter).

Far from it, I am not recommending what people should or shouldn't write, but in light of the fact that Fitzroy has a future, isn't it better to discuss this, rather than rehash the arguments that have been covered in the past (ie: regarding the AFL, Brisbane Lions, etc.)?

I would recommend definitely that this be a pro-Roys site, and not an anti-anything site.

... except perhaps the scumpires. Barbed jibes at Ross Oakley would probably be acceptable, too

Best to keep it positive.

An occasional dig is ok (eg: at the Black Bombers - everyone bags them) & I reserve the right to self-defence, if any other clown has a go at Fitzroy.

Overall though, I'd rather read the positive stuff.

The overall tone of the postings has been excellent.
Some good-natured ribbing of Richmond or some of the money-hungry players, who deserted the Roys, is only to be expected.

me thinks it will be pretty hard to police as new people wont know about it and will sometimes still need to vent about the issues of old..i think this is inevitable

i think the regulars can try to stick the policy but it shouldnt be cast in stone..
 
Yes but some people are thin skinned and don't like references to that side North of NSW, and want to stifle any sort of debate on certain subjects, and don't forget Kev that in previous posts etc, remember to be a Fitzroy supporter you needed a sense of humour and a thick hide at times.

I should have mentioned earlier : this thread is one that I brought back up during slow times on the forum ... it was originally discussed a while ago.

The general concensus seemed to be :
a) discuss Fitzroy stuff here, leave Brisbane stuff to the Brisbane board.
b) as a result, sledging between the factions to be kept minimal.

I just brought this back up front to discuss how the policy seemed to have worked a charm. Sure there's a couple of stirs, but, as you said, a couple of stirs doesn't hurt anyone. Further, there have been no full-on, down-and-dirty slanging matches.

That's why I was suggesting that the general policy has gone over pretty well.

You're right, FJD, it shouldn't be cast in stone. If it's the general direction, though, the it doesn't have to be cast in stone.

Fact is, this board was poo-pooed when first suggested (by Olmy). Since we've been underway, though, basically no-one has continued to argue against it.

So I reckon its pretty grouse! :)
 
So what your saying Mobben' is I cannot bag those scumbag b******S up North for stealing/pilfering our football club and turning it into a side that no one recognises as the original football club formed in 1883, for the enjoyment of 'populis ludos populo' in the Fitzroy and surrounding areas.
A club that produced the names of Parret, Johnston, Banks, Robertson, Worrall, Bunton, Ruthven, Smallhorn, Roos, Osborne bugga etc.
Alright I won't mention it, so forget that I mentioned it, but me and my Fitzroy pride won't let it go, that is why people support the Reds as an off shoot of the mighty FFC.
 
my fitzroy colleagues and i had a few rules when supporting the roys from the outer:

- never bag (only offer advice to ) our own players. even jeff hog was trying.
- when you leave your viewing position always cll by and purchase two cans for the pool. even if you are only going for a leak, putting a bet on or getting food. don't ever come back empty handed.
- always buy FFC raffle ticket on way in for the TV.
- always sledge opposition players who had broken the law, particularly elaborating on their crime. pies were easy pickings.
- always give the fat kid playing for the lions in the little league some support. usually spurred him on to get a few touches.
- brisbane. great place to live if you like 1948. great local comp, and nice weather. as far as noel and ross's failed merger goes, no thanks. never support this financially propped up mob. just like sydney. (rip scwabby, dermot, barassi, plugger, templeton,...and still won't win a premiership)
- always support former royboys in todays AFL. I will make a call that Roosy's 300th would have been the best game for a player playing his 300th you are ever likely to see. what a champ, carving up carlton across his 'floating backline' and a few goals to top it off and win a stunning BOG. rightfully chaired off. compare that to sam newman's 300th. we gave him a standing ovation on the boundary, and i cried as i saw his flowing mullet disappear down the race. what an ornament.
- always follow any 'fitzroy' reincarnation, go coburg, go reds, die coburg, go reds, go..

i thought these rules would be acceptable to other roys supporters, however seems that some of these elements are not acceptable on this site. sledging is a national pastime, particularly when tall poppies have ruined the game, and need to be reminded. i know for a fact that some senior AFL dignatories read some footy sites and this particular board to get a flavour of what the public want and how past decisions have gone down with grass roots supporters. i'm waiting for the next suggestion for this site, no bad language, no references to alcohol or drugs, no burping whilst you type, you should brush your teeth before you go to bed,

freedom of speach is a beautiful thing, especially as a roys supporter.

...but I don't want to dwell on it. What is in it for me to continually remind myself of the negatives?

I'm proud of being a Fitzroy supporter. I want to get as much fun out of supporting the Roys as possible. I want to know what the ex-Fitzroy players are doing now. I want to know how the Reds are going. I want to talk about & honour the Royboys of days gone by.

This board has been great, but I'd hate it to descend into constant slanging matches.

No-one has outlawed sledging. I just prefer to concentrate on the good points and memories, rather than continuing to be anti. Geezus, haven't you noticed my position on Bitchmond by now?

Bad language is simply censored, although attempts to get around the censorship with special characters are not tolerated, and that's a decision from above. Anyone who's of the mentality that they must have their swearwords spelt out in full or they're not getting their message across probably needs to grow up. My newsletters back in the early 90s used exactly the same form of censorship you see here today, and I don't think anything was lost through that.

I'm on a par with most of your dot points.

The only thing we're trying to avoid here is best summed up by some rare experiences I've had whilst supporting the Reds.

There's a couple of folk who stand at the Reds match, and do nothing but bag Brisbane. Now I don't mean that the subject came up and they had a stab at them. That would be fine by me, in fact I'd add a barb of my own.

I mean they did nothing but bag Brisbane. One example, a couple of weeks ago : Bloke turns up for a quarter, says his hellos, and then starts bagging Brisbane. In the midst of this was one, count 'em ONE, call of 'Go Reds'. Apart from that one disgression, he did not even look at the ground. Simply told us about how much he hated Brisbane.

There was no intent to support the Reds. Never was. Jus this endless tirade of anti-sentiment.

That's not a supporter ... sheeze its not even a fan!

Now I am not a supporter of the merger, not at all. I respect the decision of mates who support it, but I do not support it myself. So why the flamin' Hell would you think I want to hear about Brisbane on this board?

Slagging them off gives them too much presence on a Fitzroy board. That's what this is about, Fitzroy. If you want to talk about Brisbane, there is another forum for that.

If someone wants to argue about bringing Fitzroy back in cahoots with Brisbane (which I don't personally agree with), then both boards would to be apt vessels. If someone wants to ask what % of one mob moved to another ... both boards are fine.

But if we are to talk about the Roys here, then lets talk about the Roys. Why adulterate this board with talk about another team ... when there is another board for them.

As said before, the odd barb and snipe are fine. They don't even have to be in context. But we shouldn't let the entire direction of this board change from pro-Fitzroy to anti-Brisbane. We're not about Brisbane, we're about Fitzroy. If you can't stand the contributors who don't mind Brisbane as well, private message them, tell them that you can't sleep at night until they do exactly as you want.

I am getting extremely peed off that some folks apparently think I am being overbearing in my control of this board. I HAVE DONE NOTHING OF THE SORT. NEVER DELETED A POST, NEVER LOCKED A THREAD. That's because nobody has yet tried to destroy the good Fitzroy feeling we have in here, this superior, godly feeling.

I can't believe you're slagging me off because I want to talk about Fitzroy rather than Brisbane. I need painkillers to reply to this stuff.
