Would love to ask Wells why they passed on Dumont.

:p

Think if history has proven anything, Wellsy doesn't pass on players. He just has his own system as to how he determines a players potential value.

First and foremost in their mind would be the fact that Lang is local, a product of what BT would call the Geelong Footy Factory. Secondly he has a lot more pace than Dumont, and considering the transition Geelong have been making under Scott with Christensen, Stokes, Motlop etc to add more pace into their midfield, it fits with their criteria. Thirdly, he's got better disposal than Dumont, and at Geelong that is absolutely everything as they continuously look to take the game on and run in waves.

Lastly, his injury in the final game of the championships meant the clubs with top 15 picks who would have been keen on him probably put a line through him as there was so much top-end talent available.
Pick 16 might seem high to a lot of draft watchers, but I would trust Wells judgement massively.

Personally I see things differently.

From the first round of selections I believe Cripps and possibly Aish will make the most impact next year. Cripps physicality and work in traffic mean that we'll be looking to bring him in at the first possible chance. He's quite special in that he started his U/16 career as a 170cm really tough scragger and emerged from the U/18's as a 190cm monster. From all accounts as a junior he had to be tough to fit in due to being undersized and has kept the little-guy mentality even now as a 6 foot 3, 90 kilo brick shithouse.

Cripps is probably the closest player to Wines in the draft in that he's big enough to hold his own from the start of next year, but will be even scarier once they've reached their own peak physical strength. Extractors and clearance winners tend to make the best immediate impact at AFL level, as demonstrated by Crouch, Wines, O'Meara and co.
Tend to agree. He may find it tough against teams like Hawthorn, Freo, Sydney and Geelong who have the experienced/bigger bodied midfielders but I can't see why he wouldn't hold his own against most of the other teams whose midfielders aren't in the same class as the top 4 teams.

I am certainly looking forward to seeing this kid develop.
In the next couple of years, wouldn't mind Emma Quayle writing an article that reads: "Cripps was looked over 12 times before Carlton pounced on the young star" :D:thumbsu:
All jokes aside, looking forward to the coming year.

Wines also struggled against us from memory.

I have actually heard on the grapevine that 2014 could be a very bad year for Wine(s)! :)

I'm also interested to see how Dunstan and Cripps develop, both similar in style.
Choo heard that Dunstan was next. Wasn't McCarthy.

Convinced we'll go tall and chase one of GWS's KPP next year.

We know what happens if smaller mids run into the likes of like Hodge, Dangerfield and Kreuzer...

Hope Kreuzer finally gets a decent run with injuries.

Agreed...would just love to see Kreuzer using that big frame to ****ing spiflicate opposition players!!!

Yeah, but he only ran 20 metres in 3.11 seconds. Too slow to run down Houli. ;)

Don't think Cripps will be too slow. Simon White, Robinson and Mclean have pressured Jetta because they chased hard. Last one was funny with Brock keeping pace with Jetta as they ran for a ball that went out of bounds.

After watching the highlights video 3 or 4 times I am honestly gobsmacked that Carlton supporters wouldn't be really excited by this kid. His clean hands, balance, awareness and calmness in congestion to deliver to free players on the move and in space are exemplary. By Rd 1 2016 he will be a powerful beast.

I get the impression Cripps flew under the radar a bit because of the impact and consequences of breaking his leg in 2012.

Kinda like how Hendo slid a little in his draft year because of his broken leg.

He is weak as piss though and doesn't even feel sore after a game. How many quick 192cm mids who aren't soft are out there then?
I will never forget Grigg's celebration after the siren in round 1 this year. Was like he'd won a flag. The best is when you contrast this reaction to his sulking after the EF 6 months later ;)

So Cripps ran a 13.2 beep test coming off a low fitness base due to broken leg in 2012.

Compare this to Vlaustin who ran a 13.6 last year. Wingard 12.9 the year before.

With the expected improvement in fitness after being in an AFL environment & the natural improvement coming from recovering from his broken leg still, there's no reason why Cripps can't improve his endurance dramatically.

I told you I'd come around once he was ours ;)
