The 97 Dogs v Swans final was on Fox Sport last night. What a great match that was! Pretty tough one though with several injuries on both sides, inc Romero dislocating his shoulder and Cookie being concussed after Creswell decked him with a blatant punch in the face - not even a free kick for that!!! From memory Romero came back to play in the losing final v the Crows and had to be taken off again. Was that the next game after the Swans match? Where can you get a record of those finals series?
Someone was saying below the 98 team was better than the 97 and we should've won the last final...I thought from memory the 97 loss was worse as we had such a big lead. Can't remember the 98 one really except Cookie wasn't in it.

I thought Cookie played in 1998, Fos. As you may have guessed by now, I'm a great fan of his. Do you reckon we could get him to come out of retirement? I think we should start lobbying the club to draft him. :D :D :D :D

Didn't we have two spearheads in those days (rolls eyes)? I remember Mintie doing quite well in '98, with a few bags, which led to Cookie-monster being relegated to second-string. Perhaps my mind is gone.

FWIW, I reckon the '98 side was superior. Very unlucky not to finish Minor Premiers. If we hadn't met Adelaide again in the prelim, well .....

Cheers,
B1 :D

98 was the better side but 97 we had better chance.

In 97 we hit the finals in form. Cook and Mark West were killing them. We had a week off in 97 because north beat the cats??? Cook would have missed the GF as he got suspended in prelim.

Think he got suspended or dropped after North game in 98. That undisplinced act on centre wing on Robert Scott cost us top spot.

I think both years having the week off didn't help us. Momentum/form is a great thing and Adelaide built on theirs. The finals system of the time did help them out.

Did Kolyniuk, Kretiuk, Southern and Dimma miss some of those finals because they were coming off suspension or injury? Probably needed as many hard men as possible in finals and in hindsight a few should have played.

Not that it really matters but I think it was Dunkley who crunched Cook. In the 98 PF we were never in it unlike the 97 which we should have won.

I think 98 and 99 we had a better team than 97, but as you say, in those years we were never presented with an opportunity (4 goals up 3qtr of a prelim) like we were in 97.

Cookie starred in the 97 finals but was unfortunately rubbed out for accidentally hitting somebody in the last round of 98. I think he would have been selected ahead of Mintie at that stage though they alternated in the side a bit. I won't comment about getting him back - I think Chops is waiting with the guys in the white coats......

I was hoping there was a book with all those details in it. [Like 'The Book Of AFL Finals' - if there is a later edition of that.]
I'm pretty sure Dimma was suspended for hitting a Hawk in the last round of 97. Unjustly too, as he was retalliating to being atttacked by two opponents and just tapped one in the guts.
Re Cookie in 98, it is harsh to say he was pinged for an undisciplined act. I remember exactly what happened. He had just come off the bench and crossed the boundary, was in the clear on the wing as Darce kicked took the ball in defence, called for it but the kick went straight to a North player. Cookie ran in to try to spoil but accidentally hit the guy in the head a la Granty the year he was robbed of the Brownlow.

I wasn't aware Cooky was being canonised. Care to list the three (or is it two) miracles, Fos? :)

IMHO each team from 97-99 has a strong case:
-97 was the closest we got to a flag
-98 we were on top for most of the year
-99 we actually won more regular season games then the previous 2 years, yet we were 4th because of the huge gap from 4th to the rest of the league. However it can't be conisdered the best because of our finals effort

I would say 1998 was the best side, simply because we were in the top 2 all season. We did lose the prlim by far more but I thought the Crows that day were awesome and would have spanked anyone

My memory of it was slightly different. I agree with the you up to the "Cookie ran in to try to spoil but accidentally hit the guy in the head" bit.

I remember Cookie belting Anthony Rock (Robert Scott, maybe?) about 2 seconds after he marked. He deserved to be reported and it cost us any chance of winning the match.

In 99 we got screwed by Gavin Dore. It was really windy and it was a scrappy game. We had about 60 more possesions than West Coast and totally outplayed them but lost by 5 points.

In a game that few goals were kicked, the result was influenced by at least 4 goals that were directly from umpiring errors. The worst was when the umpires switched position and gave Wirrapunda a 15 metre penalty by accident. Wirrapunda marked inside the centre square yet the mark was set inside 50. The ball cleared Scott Wynd on the goal line by inches.

Chris Grant also took a hangar on the end of the goal square yet was penalised for high contact on Jakovich with his knee.

Someone mentioned Kolyniuk.

Kolyniuk was suspended yet could have returned for the Crows game. Koly had a great year as a small hard hitting forward. Perfect for finals footy. Yet the club played Nathan Brown (ponytail) who at that stage wasn't ready.

Always felt Billy could have been the difference in that game and couldn't believe he didn't walk straight back in. Suspended for giving Matera one at the last Whitton oval game from memory.

yeah, 97 was our red hot chance.

in 98, other teams started to 'come on', and by 99 a fair number of teams had passed us by.

98's team finished 2nd after dominating the home and away season. I don't think they were starting to 'come on' i think there were there... Just could finish the job.

There's no way it was 2 seconds! That is a hell of a long time in terms of spoiling a mark. If somebody has it on tape, could they have a look for me? I think Curly has it.

I agree.

I immediatelty(and have always since) blamed the terrible kick from Darcy that set it up(i was very pleased to hear on the radio after the game plough also felt it was Darcy who was at fault for his bad disposal and that cookie did the best he could to make a contest of it) . The kick needed to be 20 metres longer than it was. Cookie was in space (having just come off the bench i think) on the wing and instead of being able to set up a forward thrust he was forced to charge back the other way to try and break up Darcy's clanger. He was late, but when you are that size going at that speed its either risk collecting them late or give up and be labelled lazy for not having a real crack at it.

I think 99 was inferior to 98 because of more than just the poor finals performances. 98 we finished higher with less wins because the comp was more even.

98's top 2 had 4 less wins between them than 99's.

98's bottom 3 teams had 4 more wins between them than 99's.

Simply there were more easy beats in 99, so i think that 98 was a superior regular season than 99 even tho we won 2 less premiership points in 98.
