Must admit, I was dead set against this rule, hated everything it stood for.
But after watching this new rule cost Port a win tonight I think its the best thing since sliced bread!
Onya AFL!
:D

lol agreed !

Maybe it could have helped with our previous 8 point losses ?!

I think it's got some merit, but would prefer it to be only a seven point play ...

i.e. there's not many goals from outside fifty that are 50% better than a six-pointer from the boundary line.

Just can't deal with all of the new coloumns on the scorecard, though. Maybe if it was SEVEN points, they could just award a goal AND a one behind bonus.

Just watching the Port v Adel game and I see they've also introduced quite a number of other new rules for the pre-season comp.

Including :

1. You're allowed to scrag and dump an opposition player when he is simply looking in the direction of the ball.

2. You can now simply allow the ball to run freely from your grasp when tackled without fear of an incorrect disposal decision going against you.

3. The push in the back rule only applies if the tackle results in a spinal injury serious enough to keep the tackled player in traction for the remainder of the season.

4. You need only touch the ball in flight for it to be regarded as a clean mark, except if you are belted in the back of the neck whilst doing so - it is then called play on.

After viewing the Port v Adel match, and seeing these above rules in place, the AFL honchos are also seriously entertaining the suggestion of changing the name of the game from "Australian Rules Football" to "People Trying To Frantically Leave American Nightclubs" ...

I feel it kind of 'destroys' what the game is. Although in the West aussie derby last night, when Michael Gardner slotted one through, it was very exciting. Not too bad for the pre-season comp, to add a bit more excitement but if it was ever introduced to the H&A season, you'd have to be upset.

Agree with Ghost on the whole scorecard bizzo. Definitely looks strange, and not what a footy scorecard should look like!

The pre season comp. is dead boring as rule. I don't mind the 9pt rule to bring in something extra. I would hate to see it in the real games though.

As an aside, I heard the commentry team discussing the "back kicking rule". Forget which match (I think North v Essendon). They said it hadn't made much impact so it could be brought in. I couldn't believe it. So called experts agreeing that it was irrelevant and therefore should be considered for implimentation. If it is irrelevant then why would it even be considered? We seem to have a mentality governing football that change for change sake ifs a good thing. IMO the opposite is the case.

I hope none of thes rules get anywhere near the real competition.

Totally agree - they have all been a complete waste of time and added nothing to the game but confusion.

It's hard enough trying to convert non-AFL people to the code as it is, what hope do you have when the scoreboard requires a PhD in maths to be understood?

People predicted they would be crap on here months ago, and we were right.

I was thinking that if they decided to implement 9 pointers the Coleman medal would end up being like a rugby equivalent and just be most points scored by a player in a year - however they did it.

Because is a player that scores 70 'normal' goals worthier of the medal than a player that scores 65 '9 pointers'?

I thought the 9 pointer rule was a bit exciting to tell you the truth! A bit like hitting a six in cricket. The umpire does the move and then so does the crowd. I had a great time stickin my arms up in the air over the weekend. But the scorecard looks so WEIRD.

I think its a cool thing to have mathematically as well - think about it, instead of needing one straight kick to draw in the dying minutes of the game, you'd have people trying to bang in 9 pointers.

Think its a bit too "rad" for the main season though :D

Perhaps we could have a panel of judge's giving scores out of ten for each goal, a snap from the boundary may be given 9 points while a run in goal from the goal square just 4 points so as to award points on the basis of difficulty.

**** the rule off, as like you said how many goals from 51m out straight infront are better/deserve more than a goal from the boundary 49m out?? Also the scoring system is annoying and confusing to anyone not to mention people new to the game, it's a stupid idea. It's not going to win over any more of the public.

No that's been around for the last five years or so and it is very annoying and frustrating to me, what ever happened to having to dispose of the ball correctly if tackled? Dropping the ball is now seemingly allowed.

All the new rules are crap.

I say all bar 1 are crap. I like the rule where if you kick backwards to a team mate it play on. It cuts out any time wasting in the last seconds of the game and makes for an exciting finale to a close game. Apart from this rule all the other introduced rules are crap.;)

Whilst the new rules create a bit of excitement in the pre season the existing rules should be kept for the H&A season although i do like the idea of awarding perhaps 2 or 3 points for a rushed behind as it is too easy for defenders to knock it through for a point when in trouble

What's wrong with the opposition manning up?

My other concern with the 9 point rule if it ever was introduced in the season proper (god forbid) - what happens at other levels of football? Does it filter down to junior levels as well? Then we have kids ignoring their teammates in the square and going for glory instead when they have no chance of making the distance?

All the rules are silly - not quite as silly and embarrassing as the commentators banging on endlessly about "supergoals" on Saturday afternoon at Manuka - but close.

Wouldn't agree with kicking backwards rule coming into real footy - it's hard enough for rugby refs to get the direction of close passes right, on a rectangular field where play is generally straight in one direction or the other. On our grounds, with the freedom of playing in every direction, it would be impossible to tell whether every pass was "forward" or not.

Nine point goal is a hopeless idea - we like to see exciting goals, sometimes they are huge kicks, sometimes a great evading, bouncing run, sometimes a brilliant shark off the pack. Sometimes a big kick from just outside 50 is still fairly dull - as we saw on the weekend.

There's an idea - maybe next preseason they could have six judges scoring every goal for artistic merit?

Next Season can we get back to proper rules for the cup games? The new rules are crap. Just dont tell the AFL!
And can we get back to the umpire bouncing the bloody ball, so by the time the season really starts they would of had plenty of practice.
