A bit slow in QLD????

Dont ask me why, but was in the bears forum, just checking it out and I saw the subject "99 prelim final". After 1 minute of slow breathing I decided to jump in and it was about there game against north. And this quote below confirms my subject heading.

I reckon if any team deserved to win the premiership that year it was us....Leigh Matthews said himself that it was one of the best footy he's seen any team play as we did in the second half of 99...

Maybe the XXXX was a bit too warm before they wrote that or it proves that people from QLD are a bit slow.

I do remember their Prelim, it was some of the best brands of football ever played. How martyn wasn`t even called up to answer the charge of putting S.Black into hospital with a depressed fracture of the cheekbone remains one of footballs mystery`s.

Actually I agree. Brisbane were the best team of '99 and I am of the opinion that the footy they played in the second half of the season far outstripped that of any other team. They were simply awesome - even better than us.

Interesting to look at the percentages for the teams in '99.

Brisbane (for 2422, against 1671) 144.9%
Essendon (for 2400, against 1905) 126.0%
Bulldogs (for 2363, against 1993) 118.6%
Kangaroos (for 2463, against 2129) 115.7%

Brisbane came within 41 points of having the best attack, and had the best defence by a million miles. I don't think anyone came close to them that year to be honest. I don't think people rated them that highly because they didn't have a reputation yet. But simply by watching the football they played, I think they were easily the best team of the year regardless of reputation.

Ironic that they won their two premiership with teams who didn't play as high a quality football as they played in 1999. That's the unpredictability of sport!

look at some of the wins they had at the gabba, against teams in the bottom half
boosted their stats nicely

I have to disagree with Dan26 and agree with Bacon Buster.

Brisbane were not the best football team in '99. However they were the most attractive team to watch. But they weren't hard enough as evidenced by their performances against other top 8 sides.

Classic flat track bullies in that second half, they kept absolutely slaughtering bottom half teams week after week and then came up short against the better sides.

And they were rated by the media, Robert Walls was a big fan as was Sheahan.

2 years later they were a lot harder and they won the flag. Their 2001/2002 team would have taken apart the '99 team.
