I know I might not be a regular on this board but I noticed something in the past few Carlton games and thought it was a very good sign.
From my point of view I think Carlton has one very good prospect in the future, better than a few of the other teams in the bottom 8. I believe your forward line is very good and with plenty of young players (Waite, Betts, Fisher, O’hAilpin) and Fevola being only 24, if a serviceable midfield was formed in the next few years this team could be far, far better than it is now.
Thoughts?

I agree...

The midfield needs some work and we still have to make up for the wasted draft pick on Mad Mick Martin :(

If we had of used that pick on a decent youngster, he would just be coming up about now I think

Assuming Walker continues to improve and we pick up atleast 1 gun midfielder and 1 gun kpp with our priority picks thing can turn around in a couple of years. Out forward line does a good job given the ball doesn't get down there that often, and the delivery forward is often poor at best.

We desperately need a hard at it midfielder and a quality tagger who can win the ball as well. Not banister, McGrath and co but a player in the mould of Stenglein, Kirk, Rawlings, Baker etc.

We need at least 5 midfielders.
Campo and Kouta will not last long even if Campo stays. Lappin might be gone also but is also at the end of his career if he stays anyway.
We will need 2 drafts to get the midfielders we need and then have to be patient while they develop.
Bartel would be a priority in trading and the PSD.
Murphy, Ellis with the first 2 picks would be fantastic. Then 1 of Swallow or Jones with the second round.

1 of Jetta, Gibbs and Selwood for next year.

Gotta have a crack at Nathan Jones if he is still around after our first couple of picks.

After the first 5 picks anything can happen. Drum might be available at pick 19 for us or Jones or Swallow. There will be some surprises who will slip through.

Mostly agree. I really think we need to focus on getting some gun midfielders in the upcoming draft. We need support/replacement for Kouta/Campo. Yes, our defence is weak, but if we have Thornton/Livo/Karl all on the park, fit and in good form, then things don't look that bad. Nice to have a Mal Michael type FB though. Unless there is an obvious superstar, I don't think we should go for another KP forward. We've already got lots with potential who will improve with experience. Hartlett in particular is very promosing - 6'5" natural KP forward with a bit of flair, who's doing well with the Bullants. Waite and Fisher are also promosing. Setanta continues to impress. Having said that I'd be wrapped if we somehow manage to get Kosi, although I think this is unlikely. Having only 2 1/2 wins is very disappointing, but all is not doom and gloom. :)

I don't know where you get your information Parott but Hartlett has been injured most of the year and has played the last month in seconds at the Bullants. He might have played his first game back in the seniors last week.

He could be ok though.

He's played of couple of games since returning from injury and few earlier in the year. Has got good height and size for his age, and is a huge kick. Is more of a natural KP forward rather than KP back or ruck. Highly rated in the junior comp. Lot's of natural flair but has had a tendency to go missing. Lot's of attack on the ball. He would of certainly debuted if it wasn't for injury. Be very interested to see how he goes at AFL level. Could be one of the best recruits we've had for some time. :)

I rate Raso higher than Hartlett...

While we're on the subject of the draft, it appears that Hawthorn have made up their mind with pick 2. They'll take Ellis for sure. Unless we take Ellis, in which case they'll take Marc Murphy. In either case, we can't have both. I'm happy with that though, as this paves the way for Hurn with our pick 3.

i saw Raso at the Carlton kids clinic during the holidays and he doesn't appear overly tall Funkalicious. What can you tell us about him?

How do people rate Jesse Smith, Nick Becker, Adam Bentick, Jordan Russell and Luke Blackwell as our future midfielders?

I would love the Blues to take Murphy and Ellis (if available) and then it's between Nathan Jones and Andrew Swallow - they look great!

Would love a big feller like Pat Ryder or Kennedy also but wouldnt we all? Alipate Carlile from teh Bushies is a very very good player, I have played senior footy with him and he's a gem, will go late. Blues need him!

Also, ratings for Raso and Hartlett please?

The combination of Ellis and Hurn would be perfect....I would like Ellis with the no.1 pick because people i know say that he is a gun with great disposal and pace while marc murphy impressed in the U-18 but isn't as good as him and is also shorter so ellis would be more valuable

We will get 1 and 2 if the Hawks win 2 more games - unlikely, but possible. :)

He is 6'3 (190cm) and is bloody skinny................he is years off ever being a KPP. Definately going to be a flanker in his early years. Has been playing mainly at CHB for Haileybury in the APS comp.

On what basis do you make this claim? Murphy hasn't even decided if he is going to go to Brisbane yet. Personally, I rate both Murphy & Ellis and it wouldn't surprise me if we took Ellis at number 1 anyway.

Living in QLD makes it easy to follow Brisbane's dealings. ATM they're getting really desperate. :D They've now resorted to throwing piles of cash at Murphy to entice him to leave Victoria. I doubt it'll work though...

He's yet another natural forward. He knows where and when to lead and has a strong kick. Certainly capable of kicking a bag... when he's matured ofcourse.

It's too bad he isn't a monster tall though. We have so many similar types (Fisher, Fevola, Waite), yet no tall timber to take the big grab. He'll be a quality player though..

We have Hartlett and Setanta to come through next year. They might play forward or back but both have the size we have been lacking.
We need a contested marking player. Not just another lead up forward.
Josh Kennedy is the one in the draft who appears most likely to be that sort of player if that is what we are looking for.
I prefer Pat Ryder myself from what I have seen. Looking at the updated Footy Draft both were a chance to slip to our 2nd round pick but they have shot up and are both in the top 10 now.
Ryder I think will play KPP and with his leap and athleticism has a lot of potential. To small to ruck in the AFL.
