Who did you play your junior football with?
As I played basketball for most of junior years, I didn’t play footy until I was 16. I first played with Keilor before playing with the Calder Cannons last year in Melbourne.
Who was your childhood hero?
I am a big fan of James Hird. He is so skilful and a great leader. Several Essendon players came from the area that I lived in Melbourne so I had taken an interest in them.
When were you first contacted by the club, who contacted you, and what was said?
I spoke with James Fantasia and Neil Craig at last year’s Draft Camp. At that time they didn’t give away too much, they just told me I was a chance of being picked up by the Club. The interview that I had with Neil at the Camp was pretty tough.
How was the experience of playing in the National Under 18 Championships
It was awesome playing for Victoria. I didn’t have the best carnival, but it was a great experience. The first game we played was Vic Metro against Vic Country and all the AFL coaches were there so I was a bit nervous before the game.
What has been the best part of pre-season training so far?
Everything. It is a great experience and because we are here everyday, you get used to the routine. I have spent a fair bit time inside because of my injury, but I love coming to the Club and training.
What has been the worst part?
Easily the 6am starts.
How big a step up has the training regime been from what you have previously been used to?
It is a huge step-up. At Calder we used to train three days a week and then two during the season, so the volume of work is enormous compared to what I am used to.
The most “interesting” teammate you’ve met so far; why?
Chris Ladhams, because he makes me laugh with his joke telling.
How have you settled into life as an AFL footballer, in a new state (if applicable) and in a totally new environment?
It has been good. I have become close to the other drafted players in Chris Knights, John Meeson and Nathan Van Berlo, which has been good because we are all in the same boat having moved away from home. I am living with one of the club’s host families and that has made settling in very easy.
Outside of training hours, what have you been doing in your spare time?
I am a big fan of watching movies.
