Half time on Saturday night at Subi when a stranger comes up to me and says "Great game!" I looked at him blankly and replied "You're kidding me right?"

"No. Not this game. Your kids yesterday." I was amazed. He wasn't a parent of kids at school, but just a local.

Turns out he recognised me, coaching in a local Freo school game the day before. I'm new to the school this year, but apparantly our school footy team had their first interschool footy win for about 4 years. I don't focus on winning too much but the kids were absolutely thrilled with the win (by just 7 points) They started hugging one another and jumping on one another when the siren went (I actually had to speak to them about not over celebrating :o ).

It's amazing what a win does. Now all the real sporty Yr 6/7 boys that chose soccer for interschool want to play footy. They witnessed our win and thought it looked like great fun. But I'm not going to let them play. My team is this motley crew, bad news bears, average joe type with a mix of kids and a number of girls playing for the first time. They may look a bit of a rabble but I'm not going to drop them because of these better skilled "recruits". They're a rabble, but I've become attached to my rabble! They remind me of one of those early Freo teams.:D

BTW, I asked the Dockers for a donation and they are giving us a set of new footy jumpers (worth about $800-$900)

Next game, we are really going to look the part!

Great post hoss.
Good to see FFC donating, great to see you have girls on your side, the best of all is the fact you obviously have a crossection of disparate players in a team who together have achieved a rewarding outcome. Not only for themselves but there parents and relatives.

While my kids played junior sport I found nothing in the real world came close to the enjoyment you could feel from watching young kids play a team game.

Long live junior sport.

Not to hijack your thread or anything.. but the thread topic reminded me. After the game on Sat, Rick Hart was walking the boundary and took off his scarf and put it around a young girls neck. She looked pretty stoked.

Was a nice story. Didn't think to post it until I saw this :)

Well, not exactly IP though navy blue and green would match our school uniform.

I know... ;)

Bicton Primary School (whose colours are blue and yellow... :o ) got new jumpers from FFC - navy blue with yellow anchor. Looked a bit weird actually - our jumper in weevil colours.

Thought maybe they'd done a similar thing for your school. :)

Still, it would look fetching for your particular school, being the school that it is, to have their motley footy team respendant in purple when they take the field!

I'm always in purple! Our jumpers are still at Burley-Sekem but I think they are green with a white anchor. We're not too fussy, just rapt to have a jumper that is linked to Freo with the anchor. Scary thing is we're playing for the Eagles Cup.

How are "The Crew" off for funds, hoss?

Our "match balls" are donated and once we have our new jumpers we're laughing. To be honest, our school is in a higher socio-economic area than those we compete against in Beacy, Hilton etc. All I have to supply is the half-time oranges.

Funny that our school, being "inner city" doesn't even have enough room for a footy oval or enough room for training. We will walk up to Stevens Reserve for practice.

We have to play our "home games" away, a bit like Melbourne v Brisbane at the Gabba. Luckily, like the Dockers we "travel" quite well.

Best thing about the game on Friday was the spirit it was played in. First thing I did on Monday morning was email our opponents Principal to congratulate their kids. One of those games where it was a pity to have a loser.

Wow. I'm not only stoked that FFC are donating jerseys and the whole bad news bears win (I've been in that situation many times to know the euphoria of that win) but the fact that a local of the town came up and congratulated you. It shows how much the game itself is loved by locals in the town to care about inter-school footy results.

I've never seen or heard anything like that since my days in Melbourne playing out of Toolern Vale in Grade 2.

nice heart warming story hoss, keep up the hard work and good to see the Dockers donating......also one thing ive learnt in life and sports is that if you have lots of heart and desire to play well it can get you over the line more then skilled players at times.

An update on the "Motley Crew"

Inspired by the anchor on their new jumpers, the crew lost just one game in the Eagles Cup competition.

Then the little champs won their football lightning carnival - first trophy for six years!!! The Dockers are unbeaten since our triumph, inspired by our win.

Today I took 60 kids down to the club for a footy clinic, expecting that it would be run by some of our "lesser lights". Our teachers for the day were The Wiz, One Melee Dodd, Groves, The Schamster and Lukey Webster and they were brilliant with our kids. Every player signed autographs for each and every student after we finished. They also posed for every photo asked for. They showed the kids right through the clubrooms and training facilities and the kids had a bonus running into Peakey!

Obviously our kids were absolutely rapt! :)

.....and kiss, like after the Saints game last year. :o

Seriously, Jeff Farmer is just brilliant with the kids - has a great manner and sense of humour that they all adored.
