Toast A trip down memory lane... David Grenvold.

Well it is that time of the year where it gets a little boring before now and the NAB Cup. Thought I'd spark it up a little, with a look at some of the great and unheralded players of the EFC.

1993 Premiership player David Grenvold is the first cab off the rank. An unassuming, rugged, reliable, tough old fashioned HBF.

David Grenvold came across from Glenelg in SA in 1989, and became one of Essendon's most reliable players.

He played 12 games in his debut season and the following year played every game, except for a two week suspension.

Grenvold injured his knee in a practice game at Moorabbin in 1991 and didn’t play a game that year. But he was back in 1992 with 11 games then played every game in 1993 including the premiership win over Carlton.

He provided the side with another option for the backline and across the centre. He represented South Australia in 1993, and was selected in the squad for 1995. Injuries were unkind to him in 1996, and he suffered one injury after another, which limited him to one game for the year.

Grenvold retired at the end of the 1996 season and then played at Glenelg in the SANFL.

Thanks for the memories David. :thumbsu::)

For those old enough to remember, please add your memories and thoughts on David Grenvold.

I still remember at an Essendon family day when he signed my little brother's Sherrin as 'Paul Salmon'.......

He obviously thought that was a funny thing to do to a 8 year old kid with his first Sherrin........

HAHAHA that is funny! My memory of Dave is that he finished with the ball on the wing in the first anzac day game.

Dave was a gun. If he wasn't injured so often, and was able to get his full potential, he would be one of the clubs favorite sons. Was brilliant and tough, I loved watching him, especially as an 7 year old kid when we went to every game tha year.

Great idea for the summer, I will enjoy these!

Looking forward to the Peter Somerville one, a very much underrated ruckman by our own fans!

yeh he's one that doesnt standout in the memory bank but recall him as a consistently solid performer - by that i mean i dont recall ever launching a stubbie at the tele because of him;)

Or spill a beer from jumping to your feet with excitement. Just an excellent solid footballer

Actually whenever I see number 29 for any team I instantly think of him for some reason.
I remember having a few of his football cards, mind you I was 10 when he retired >_>

H.Slattery should aspire to reach Grenvold's level.

Grenvold was a consistent AFL player - No frills or fuss but could get the job done.

Grenvold is a classic example of your team only being as strong as your lesser members. He was never a star but was a very good, no frills performer. When you can afford to have players like him in minor roles you know you have a strong unit. He was good in the air but also surprisingly nimble on the ground. Would love to have a 24 year old Grevlold at the club right now. Underrated, but you wouldn't have it any other way.

Tough, consistent and reliable is the best way to describe him. Unheralded but rarely made mistakes and could always be counted on.

I'm too young to remember more than the name, but I wonder which of our current lot will be remembered similarly in 20 years' time?

Will a Browne or Ross type become that? A Hocking or Slattery?

Definitely think that H.Slattery is closest to Grenvold, although Grenvold is a better mark and can win his own ball.

T.Slattery is even closer to the mark but he is no longer on the list.

I think the story goes that he stood aside so that Gary Moorcroft could be promoted from the rookie list, and that Moorcroft then went on to wear #29 in tribute?

Correct weight.

the only difference is that Grenvold had reasonable skills, was a smart player and had a good footy brain, so ......

i was 11yrs old through to 17 when David played, so saw his whole career, and remember thinking even at the time that Grenvold was the most consistent player in the comp.....the gap between his best and worste games was probably less than almost any player going around, as in almost every week you'd give him a 7 out of 10.

Not sure we really have a Grenvold type on the list at all tbh. Hocking is possibly the man who reminds me of Grenvold the most as he's solid and is probably a bit more suited to playing on a taller opponent rather than someone smaller and possibly more zippy than him.

Certainly was a big fan of Mr.D.Grenvold's work. :thumbsu:

Welsh in his early years looked like being a bit similar I think, but since then he's played up forward and in the middle and polarised a lot of fans.

Though playing styles are very different I think Howlett is probably the best contempary comparison given his consistency and no frills approach that sees him never being overhyped or criticised. Just goes about his business each week.
