We have a few players who are firmly in the sights of uneducated posters, and are regarded as the cause of our problems.
Joseph is a wholehearted competitor, who has made some glaring errors in the last line. He really does not have the poise to be a last line defender. Neither has Tuohy, who will be a star HBF, wing or mid in time. Posters underestimate the pressure applied when a side streams forward, even moreso in today's footy, than years gone by. Both are players with a role in our future. Our coach/MC unfortunately is determined to make them last line players....big fail. We have 2 players on our list who have shown enough to be last line defenders on pacy small forwards. Russell and Armfield. Ratten has persisted in playing them up the ground, Armfield is making a decent fist of it, russell is not a 36o degree player and has suffered. He has probably played himself out of 2013, but I believe should get another go IN THE LAST LINE. Failing that players such as Curnow and Garlett hould be given a try down there. Jeffy lost all form, and is too goal conscious, Curnow is probably behind Ellard and McLean for midfield role now. Posters calling for Buckley etc to replace Joseph are way off the mark. Maybe a Tom Bell can be introduced through the backline, have not seen him play but reports suggest may be a good inside mid down the track. Dale came to the club HF/HB, does he have the defensive nous? Laidler will be back, ra ra ra. Does still not give us a lockdown small defender. The role has to be filled.
Similarly, criticism of Hampson's forward work is unfair, he is doing a role for his team (coach) despite being personally better served elsewhere. Our structures do not spread the defence, they congest our attack.
Watson spend half of the season in the 2's being pilloried by posters for not coming up. Now the same people are lauding him......all he needed was opportunity.
We have too many players played out of position, or overlooked due to hype or lack of it.
The likes of Walker up the ground when our midfield undermanned can be defended, but the soldiers are returning....we need forward targets NOW.
Hendo has become a very good backman, helps forward structure, but better down back. Walker to join Hammer/Kreuze and probably Thornton in Waite's absence as forward targets. Collins has earned a spot ahead of Garlett to join Betts to form a potent forward line
