ABC Cuts - Good-bye VFL telecasts

Saw on the news that the VFL game on Saturdays will no longer be telecast. It is a shame as there a some games that I can't get to and rather enjoyed watching not only our team but others play too.
Oh well, hopefully we can all get to more games.

I don't think that a 1% per year cut to the ABC would stop them showing the VFL if they wanted to.

Actually, a 1% cut per year shouldn't stop them doing anything other than wasting money on stupid shit.

Commercial stations have had to deal with massive cuts, and now they're showing the VFL, so it really makes the argument moot.

All up, $20 million will be cut from the ABC's budget in 2015-16, rising to $61 million in 2016-17, $55 million in 2017-18, and $68 million in 2018-19.

People are losing jobs out if this, which is the real shame. I'm from Canberra. Been plenty involved in the public service game and know that this happens - governments (read: new governments) target savings from within and the real people who work hard and have families and mortgages and are within these organisations are impacted. Just like an airline or a manufacturer cutting costs, jobs are lost.

I feel for anyone who loses a job due to something being their control.

I value the ABC greatly also and I'm concerned about the way these cuts will be administered.

They have a billion dollar budget. Those million dollar figures sound impressive on their own, but really it's not the savage cuts that they're making it out to be.

I've heard first hand of some ridiculous things that they throw money at from a friend that works there, and you'd probably be shocked to find out what your tax dollars are being spent on.

Arguments could go on forever on the pro's and cons of the cuts and the impact that the behemoth that the ABC has become on commercial media, but honestly, I've already stupidly broken my golden rule of avoiding political discussion on these forums, so this will be the last I post of it.

All up it's closer to a quarter of a billion dollars. When we look at the superficial news and current affairs that emanates from our commercial stations, it's hardly a moot point.

There was an article I read yesterday (can't remember where now) that was written by a former senior manager of Radio National. She had also worked for Fairfax etc in the past. Anyhow, the article was about how she couldn't believe the waste at the ABC and the complete lack of accountability when it comes to spending etc.

While it is the view of only one person, you'd think that there is a bit of truth in what she wrote. If I can find the article I'll post a link.

Thanks for providing that. I don't have access to the details, so am probably expressing a view based on my own personal bias. We all have different views, which is a good thing!

Back on topic, I will miss the VFL broadcasts on the ABC, not that the Pies get much coverage. A commercial station could very well do better - even with the ads! Also hope Phil Cleary gets a gig.

Perhaps the news and radio readers/hosts earning 300k per year? An online editor earning 285k or Scotts 700k. That's a great way to spend public money.

Anyway, I'm sure the commercial channel will offer more than one or two Pie games per year that our ABC was ever able to deliver.
