FORMER AFL star Gary Ablett senior has been bashed in an alleged attempted robbery in Geelong.

The attack happened some time after 11.30pm (AEST) last night in Latrobe Terrace, Geelong's busiest street, police said.
Ablett was taken to hospital with minor injuries, police said.

A man, 31, has been charged with attempted robbery, assault with intent to rob, intentionally causing injury and assault with a weapon.

He will face the Geelong Magistrates' Court today.

Police would not confirm what weapon was used in the alleged attack.

How pathetic. As if a Geelong resident would not have known who he was attacking.

This sucks! It's so rough how Gary is being treated by some people. I feel sorry for him. His trying to get his life back together and then other people just come along and stuff everything. Hopefully he gets better soon and can return to some sort of normal life.

Absolutely. I grew up with people like Gary and John Barnes around the family home regularly. Very fine people, John especially.
Sadly I haven't seen much of Gary in the last twelve months. Thoughts are with him though,
