As far as im concerned its fair game. Most of the stuff looted will be damaged anyway and its up to the government and various companies to replace it free of charge anyway.
Let the looters loot in peace and get on to more important things I think. Aslong as sharing occurs it cant do too much harm

I had no idea how, but I knew when I saw the title that this would be the subject.
Shit happens, no different from normal stealing to be honest.
I'm not condoning it, but it's just the same as any other theft really. Be grateful they've been caught.

Looting is only a problem if it turns violent. Otherwise its just like rubbish pick up day. If its on the street or the doors wide open, take what you want/need and rock on. Someone else besides you should pay for it after all the crap you are going through/have been through. Aslong as your not greedy its all good
The multinational corporations who will benefit from a rebuilt Christchurch in the long run. Insurance companies and the government can take care of the rest

You realize that not everyone has insurance? The government will take care of the rest? You're living in dreamworld.
There will be an out pouring of donations and the government will provide money. People effected by the tragedy will receive financial assistance, but it surely will not cover everything.
You would be happy if you're house was partially damaged by the earthquake, then looters broke in and took all of your belongings "It's ok guys take what you want, the government will replace everything".
The government should take care of the rest. Anything less is a complete failure on there part. This is one of many reasons we pay taxes for
I wouldnt mind aslong as it wasnt personal belongings like photos and crap. Im pretty sure people in Christchurch arnt running home praying there TV survived the quake. Its not really that valid atm so if someone does take it then who cares really

What if you have expensive family heirlooms? Think they are gonna leave that stuff alone coz it might have personal significance. I can't believe i'm even having this argument. Can't believe you can't admit your logic might be a little flawed.
Not only are these people thieves, they are also preying on people that have just lost alot/everything. They are scum.
If it looks like a antique than leave it. My logic is flawed because your understanding of it is flawed. Looting is "take what you can carry" theft so it generally involves small items. Things like Ipods, TV, maybe some cigs and booze, a little bit of chocolate for desert and bobs ya uncle
In your example well its more stupid than scummy but the general idea of looting isnt really a bad one in the grand scheme of things.

Looting is different altogether. You take what you can grab and whats right infront of you. It also generally involves going through shops as opposed to houses. Looting in its more natural definition involves taking from those that can afford to lose. Theres also a hell of alot more than six people involved.
This is what Im talking about. Look how much closer the town is when they are looting. Its nice I think

suggest some of the mental heavyweights in here look up the definition of looting and take a reality check.
looting is stealing in a time of hardship, war or other disaster situation goods which would otherwise not belong to the looter.
reckon that's stealing, and to do it when other people are suffering is even worse.
these people are scum and deserve harsher treatment than general theft situations.
some of the clowns in here defending this or saying that it's not that bad, thanks for the insight into your personality and the lifestyle you live and were brought up in, your parents must be proud.
