Like every team has, Franklin, Tippet ect
Yeah, highlight 2 of the largest contracts the Swans have done to bring players in.

So Sydney overpays players to convince them to come play for us

Melbourne get players like Lever and Langdon on the cheap

Ignoring the others (May, Grundy, Brown, Hunter) who you have brought in

Lever May and Grundy all on large contracts to be fair.

Edit - Can’t complain about recruiting Franklin can you? He has kicked more goals for you guys than any Melbourne forward in history.

Franklin is a star, but I'm highlighting the only way we could get him (and Tippett who was mentioned) was to pay them massive contracts

That’s the same with pretty much every club? We had to pay Lobb overs, Jackson is on somewhere between 700k-1m (depending which reports you give the most credit) for seven years.

Sydney have an incredible retention rate and Brisbane have no trouble recruiting big name Vic players (and Lachie Neale). You guys might not have the ability to really target homesick players (how would we know though, you have all the talent from your states effectively) but you have your own unique advantages that I’ve listed before.

I fail to see any real argument Brisbane and Sydney are so disadvantaged they should keep universal access to academy talent and have a massive advantage over SA and WA clubs.

I’d concede getting access to that talent if there’s a massive change to how bids can be matched like for first round bids you need a pick within 5 of the bid or something. This could apply to F/S as well

Which VIC players at the Swans went home in the last few years ?

Since 2014, these player all been traded to melb:

Membrey (v), Biggs (v), Bird, T Mitchell (wa), Nankervis (Tas), S Murray (vic), Rohan (vic), Hanners (vic), Darcy Cameron (wa), Z Jones (vic)

These players have been traded to Swans from Vic:

M. Talia, Clarke, Thurlow, Francis

Not great reading from a swans POV. Different circumstances for each player which is like all trades. 7 Vic players returned home.

Can tell you now, the interstate trades are not much better reading for us.

Mainly because the AFL will not stump up to actually develop the grass roots in either NSW or Qld.

Last time they had control it was a barren wasteland for talent. Additionally, not being the dominant code siphons promising juniors into NRL at a rapid rate.

If AFL actually had a guaranteed 20 year investment at a fix dollar amount that equals of exceeds the amounta the clubs put in, would be happy to relinquish the academy.

We haven't recruited many of the last few years. Most of our players have been from SA, WA and NSW (you know, academy players. Sydney can't lose them to go home when they already are home).

In saying that we still lost Jones and Hannebery. I'm not counting Rohan.

How many NSW players has Hawthorn lost over the last few years?

You "lost" Hannebery? You got rid of him and laughed yourselves senseless.

We got Breust but only because you lot didnt want him. Smith was an older recruit too, also not wanted by the Swans.

Also overlooked Tex Walker. And Lenny Hayes. And Billy Brownless. And Matt Suckling.

Im sure heaps more too.

Mitchell the only real loss in that list, and Longmire had him in the NEAFL half the time and told him to take a pay cut because he wasnt in the core midfield group.

Papley was going to leave but wisely stayed when the side deal fell through.

All different circumstances? Most of those that left you, left because they weren't getting games.

Most were in the 16 - 26th on the list. The question I responded to was who were the players who have gone back to Vic.

I could go on about how playing in traditional states enables "unsolicited third party contracts" to spontanously pop up and thus depth or youth retention to be easier but that is a whole different other discussion.

At the end of the day, more than happy to give up the academies if they are fully funded by the AFL at, or above the current spend the clubs put into them.

Or, carve up NSW and Qld and enable each club an academy area which they are allowed to access. Caveat is, must fully fund a specified amount into grass roots/junior program in the area

I think this is fine, AFL should be paying for the academies.

I’m happy for academies and F/S to exist.

Just make teams pay a tax on pick matching. Ie instead of a 20% discount for fathers sons you pay 130% of the cost of the pick due to access to elite talent.

In terms of going only to a points system I think the best way to do it is this.

The team that finishes last (aka would normally get pick 1 has the right to nominate a player the would like to draft.

Teams have 3 minutes to place a bid on that player in points.

The team that nominated the pick then has the ability to match the highest bid on that player.

If that pick is matched they get the player. If they don’t match they get to nominate again.

Points can’t be banked for future years. It’s use it or lose it.

Yeah AFL should pay for it and the players go into the draft like every other kid in the country has to do.

Only disclaimer I would make is that GC/GWS should have access until they start getting access to Father sons like other teams. As they would be disadvantaged otherwise.

Sydney and Brisbane are double dipping currently.

Bring NGA forward to top 20 protected and Brisbane and Sydney’s top 20 capped and then GC and GWS top 10 capped
F/S leave as is GWS and GC are only a couple years away from being able to get them and they’ve had enough hand outs already anyway

Didn’t the AFL change the academy rules so that if your academy player is drafted in the first round you can’t even bid for them anymore, doesn’t count.

Why is all this talk happening about Gold Coast academy players? If they are any good they won’t get them anyway, correct?

No there are 2 types of academy. Northern which is NSW and QLD you can match anytime only restriction I know is if you make finals you can only match 2. So if suns made finals they couldn’t match a bid on the third of their crop this year they would need to draft them with a legitimate pick. Next Generation academies is what all other clubs have and that is where you can only match after pick 40.

And then you automatically can put them on your list as a CAT B rookie if they go undrafted.

We did it with Munkara last year.

Why only Melbourne bound players included? It's about equal retention. If nsw or Queensland draft picks are way in the minority then the ability to draft / retain or have returning home players is way out of wack. That's why Cola ( sorry to mention) was there and that's why academies is in its current form. Non afl states will always be up against it until that changes.
