Looking forward to the U18 champs on FoxFooty tomorrow, but would not pretend to have anywhere near the understanding of matters drafting as Quigley whose analyses I very much respect.

Quigley may well not care to respond to this question and I would understand why. Notwithstanding, can I ask what his opinion is of our recruitment over the past, say, 5 years. Do we have sufficient recruitment resources or is it a matter of expertise.

Honestly I have no idea. I think the move from Hadley to centralise everything in Melb was not necessarily a good thing particularly when I think that just allowed Kerr to interfere. I think Kerr did quite a lot of things right but I did not really rate his approach to drafting talent ie picking the players to fit the model rather than picking the best players and then contructing a model that makes best use of their talents.

What they have done well with the selection of Mayes and particularly with our picks last year was to not to try and get too smart and just pick the best player on the board. They picked all highly rated players and didn't reach for guys to show how smart they are. There is plenty of that happens in the draft and you will find the teams which do really well in the drafts just pick the players that fall to them.

On the academy I have heard that other clubs do rate what we are doing and think we have the best system of any of the 4 clubs and we have put the most time, effort and money in. Despite me slagging off some of the things they have done the last couple of years that is encouraging to hear.

How tall is Keays? Watching him play recently he looks about 185cm, even taller on the highlights.

Is everyone still rating Darcy Cameron-Reeves? Seems like his been down this year and haven't heard much

I hear his commitment and preparation cannot be faulted.

Next generation on show next week with the U14 State Championships at Burpengary, quite a few Academy boys will be playing no doubt. There is a kid by the name of Adam Peak who will be playing for Brisbane South East who looks to be a bit of a star in the making, plays for Morningside. I've only seen him play a few times but he reminds me of a young Luke Hodge, very impressive. In the same side is Casey Voss, can't get over how much he moves across the ground like his father (to be expected I guess). I'm looking forward to seeing some future Lions take their next step, should be some quality footy.

Adam Peak is an outright gun, such a natural footballer, carries a bit of puppy fat but I suspect as he gets older his body will transform.

He certainly looks the goods, magic left foot.

It is funny how often this happens. It is like how often pick 7 has been one of the better players in the draft the past few years, and i think you are spot on Quigs. Simply, clubs try get smart and out do themselves and usually in that 5-10 area clubs are just amazed such a player is still there and jumps. You look at our picks with Taylor and Aish last year, both are a case of simply best available. We did take Gardiner and McStay in between as need based picks, but you gotta know when to take a bargin. I think clubs get carried away with top picks, they have all the options and end up stuffing the pick.

That is good to hear, especially when you take into account our off field financial position. If we can get the club into a healthy financial place to be able to fund our footy and development areas better, who knows what we can do that academy.

Nice little article. It always peaks my interest when a player enjoys playing a defensive position, in his case CHB. Takes a certain type to not just be happy to play the role... but really enjoy it.

Same. And Hammelmann looked the goods in the highlights too!

Me likely very much !

Seriously needs to put some weight on but his strong hands, length agility and speed all look like great attributes. Kind of in the Joe Danaher mould.

Anyone have a stream? THink I read somewhere its been played on fox footy

Nah not televised - I went to the game. Didn't stick around to etch NSW v TAs though - just too bloody cold!

Hammelmann ended up kicking 2 bt could've kicked 5.

Keays, uebergang and Weller all kicked goals and Preuss ended up with 2.

Interested to see the Stats but I thought Hammelmann and Keays were great - looked really classy. Keays laid a lot of tackles too! Wasn't sure of who some of the others were as I didn't have a program.

Preuss is a massive unit. Took a couple of nice marks too. Not sure if he is lions academy though?
