I do not go onto other boards, but the 1 time I do, our old mate @BillyPuller posted this on Kightmares 2015 draft. Was 3 months ago, but kudos for telling it like it is.

The academies to a lot more than just produce talent in these states they grow the game. Mate I have seen first hand the effects of the academies for the growth of the game. The introduction of the academies is the best thing to happen in my state to promote the AFL because it helped the respect of the game grow. I remeber everytime AFL was mentioned it was 'Oh Gayfl this, Gayfl that' no one gave it a chance everyone was rugby rugby rugby. Then the academies came about and all of a sudden all the star rugby players were asked to train with the academy summer program. That was the last time I heard the word Gayfl ever mentioned in my school. These kids went to improve their fitness and came back with RESPECT for the sport, this filtered down an all of a sudden the school footy team which struggled to even field 22 players had 60+ participants. Half the first XV rugby team signed up to club footy. Not one of them was any good at AFL. And I know at least 3 players who were good enough to play Rugby Union professionally now playing Div2-3 AFL for local clubs. Not one of these guys would have even given it a go if it wasn't for the academies. And this is just one small school. Footy mates from other schools all spoke about the exact same thing, you could see the school AFL teams all of a sudden have a wealth of players. And I have not heard the term Gayfl used in about 5 years now. I can bring up AFL to almost any person my age and they have some understanding of the game, yeah they might not really follow it but one thing the academies have done is give AFL respect amongst everyone. They know how hard it is of a game to play now, they know how hard you have to train to even run out a game at div 4 levels. I would hate for these changes to deter investment in the academies because they do so much for the growth of the game.

Thanx, Billy.

Rep sides deal with talent selection. Academies SHOULD deal with talent identification.

Talent identification produces more end talent than talent selection.

I will expand..

For example; Many an u12 rep team may have a player or many players that have already started maturing. Obvious factors will be size, strength, speed, a growth of pimples and facial hair. These players may be 12yo by the calendar, but are 14yo biologically. These kids get 'selected' into rep teams and on the academy.. finish maturing and growing by 15yo and fade out of the academy.

Other kids, more slowly maturing, haven't the growth spurt, strength, speed etc that comes with the maturing growth spurt. No less talented, and often with a much bigger upside in end talent, don't get 'selected' and don't make the academy, thereby missing years of development at the academy and are lost to the sport.

Parents of these kids know nothing and don't consider the maturity levels of their own or other kids. They just think their boy wasn't good enough, and often take them to other sports thinking AFL isn't for them. If you think 'talent selection' is working, consider this;

Of the 250-270 kids that play in the QLD state u12s carnival each year, only 1.5 of them (only 1 or 2 every second year) ever end up playing top grade AFL. That is an atrocious conversion rate. It is because it is aimed at talent selection, not talent identification.

And what have the yanks found? ;

Put an end to the win at all costs nature of pre-pubescent sports, especially things like state and national championships prior to middle or high school, and televising events like the Little League World Series (which has run since 1946 and produced only 27 Major League Players in that time).!!!!!!!!!!!!

Focus on developing all players at the youngest ages, with particular attention given to helping the less skilled ones catch up technically to the stronger ones. Thus, when they finish their growth spurt, we have a much larger pool of adequately skilled individuals to choose from, instead of just the kids who happened to have facial hair at 12 but stopped growing at 13.

I thought that Chol went very well in the ruck, could see him superseding Archie as the development ruck on the rookie list next year.
Jack Rolls didn't get a lot of ball but looked very composed when he did and took good options.
Allison was poor in his shots at goal, maybe nerves, but he's got a stack of talent and it's hard to see us passing on him next year.

I'm starting to think we may have to let one of these guys go to another club. It is not a bad thing for the credibility of the Academies but it will be sad to see a Dennis or Wagner depart because they are slightly higher rated than we are prepared to pay.

Depends on how deep we rate the following year of academy/draft kids I guess. Do we sacrifice a few next season for what we can get this time around?

Sucks they have to play at Skilled and not Etihad like the other game.

Ben Keays looks like an absolute jet. 14 touches and 2 goals, 5 mins into the the second. Hasn't done a thing wrong yet.

After only going down by a goal to a full strength Vic team in the grand final of the U15 champs last year you would have to think they are looking pretty good to play Div 2 in the champs this year.There are only a few changes from the group who went around last year plus the addition of a few NQ boys.

I noticed some highly rated U15 names from last year missing:
B Shelton
T Fullarton
Anyone know what happened to them?

U15 All Australians in Jack Clayton and Connor Ballenen are in however.
