Had a look at the QLD 16s today vs Tasmania at Broadbeach. Very impressive with an 80+ point flogging (from memory) although a long time away before we start looking at draft targets there is already a lot to look forward to very promising group.

Jacob Allison played through the midfield and forward line. 192cm, quick and agile and has a booming leg. Very skinny only in the mid 70kg area but a lot to work with.
Reminds me of Marco Paparone but could easily be turned into a David Mundy like on-baller as he showed ability to win contested ball.

Eric Hipwood is a 17 year old having a second crack at 16s, playing at full forward. Very athletic and tall, again on the skinny side but kicked a bag of goals. Is 198cm but works on the ground and in the air. Dropped a few easy marks but very competitive and laid atleast 6 solid tackles.

Jack Rolls played on the wing and racked up 20-25 clean possessions. He has elite endurance and tackled really well. A bit of Matt Rosa about him. Went off with an injury in the last Q and no doubt could have ended up in the 30+ region had he have continued.

Declan Watson at fullback wasn't given much opportunity to strut his stuff but the tall KPD has extraordinary closing speed and defends aggressively, very similar player to Nick Jackson.

Notable performances were Dom Paino, a ruckman who is very good at ground level (possibly Lions academy -unsure) and Brad Sheer (GC academy) in-and-under Tom Libatore-like midfielder, 185cm and strongly built.
Long time to go before we start looking at who to pick but seems like a very good crop coming through. Heights are from memory as I misplaced the program booklet from today

Have heard a bit about this kid, watched him play as well a couple of times and he just oozes class, a really natural footballer. Can you remember off the top of your head what his height/weight was?

He really did catch my eye, was named BOG on aflq.com.au.
Can't remember his exact measurements but he would have been around the 181cm mark and low 70's kg

If i am correct he had an older brother play in the 16's champs last year?

Yes that's correct. Tom Rolls played a couple of games last year in the 16s. Very different body shapes, with Tom being a lot more muscular then he's brother. Jack is a more athletic lean build but could possibly fill out like Tom did.

Some discussion of our other academy u18 players here:

Interesting to hear Fletch note that the "better players" will now be released back to their NEAFL teams to prove themselves against men.

Think it is a good move, even just for their development. You have to ask, with the ressies team so depleted, is it the best environment for them to learn, or are they better off playing with a club like Aspley. As the draft years go one, the academy boys would have spent more and more time in the academy system, so balancing out their playing time would be a good idea.

16s went down by 8 points to NSW/ACT at Southport. A few players who found it easy in game 1 went missing, but Declan Watson at fullback was absolutely brilliant. A natural KPD, he was rarely beaten one-on-one and was extremely competitive on the ground. He is listed at 191cm and 73kg. He always fights for the front position and there was only 1 instance when he was pushed under the ball. He comes third man up and kills the contest with a fist. He kicked out for most of the game and made decent decisions by foot. In my opinion, best on ground for QLD.

Reuben William is a boy of Sudenese decent but does not play like most of the kids with his background. He is only 183cm and 73kg and played as a crumbling forward. Extremely quick and applies constant defensive pressure, laying some good tackles. He was always at the feet of his key forwards and hit the scoreboard at least once. I was informed he was not part of the lions academy yet but is a Zillmere boy. He is an overager but only by 1 day (31.12.97).

Jack Rolls was once again impressive on the wing, calm and composed. Brad Scheer (GC) was very good inside and Max Hewitt, at only 171cm, also had a very good game

Having the academies in place surely must be improving the quality of the kids, as well as bring in new faces. That extra coaching and development they get, combined with then playing with better players in the QLD state teams, and a stronger senior NEAFL set up has to be starting to pay off. Seems like a good trickle of talent coming through over the next few years.

Outstanding. From 2:20 on - "just go back to supporting the Lions".

Want, want, want.

Haha. Brought a massive smile to my face when he said that. Also when he said he'll still be going to every Lions game cheering the boys on no matter how they're going. How good is it that a kid of his talent is a Lions fan and we can pick him up in next years draft? :)

Really should be a poster boy for how great the academy is for the Lions and footy in Queensland and the fact that we would have probably lost him to another side or that he wouldn't have had the chance to develop his footy to put him in a strong position to be drafted.

all i'm getting is static sound on both of those videos, extremely annoying.

Sound is only coming out of left speaker for me. Light static in the right.

We'll see how the cut of his jib is after his tour of the Lexus Centre

He'll never get there. We hid him straight after filming that interview.

Lots of love for Keays and rightly so but I still really like the look of Moseley and his inside game is ball winning ability is a significant need for us. He had a pretty good champs and I am hoping that he gets an AIS spot. He is a risk of poaching from rugby codes and having a bit of extra encouragment might help retain him in AFL. If I was the Lions I would be lobbying the AFL to make it happen. The kid has the athletic ability and talent to justify it.

I know where your coming from Mosely cracks in and wins the ball but his disposal is abysmal a lot of the time, watching the game on Fox Footy his kicks rarely found a target and a fair percentage were mongerals. Seems to get tired fairly easily as well, which is expected from Rugby athletes who are built for power more than endurance.
