If Morrison is fit he should come straight in. Class player who you'd want firing by finals time.

Wooden's replacement will be between Adkins, Chambers, Selwood.

Unfortunately Morrison doesnt appear to be the player he once was and therefore couldnt be considered a walk-up start anymore

From what I saw on Saturday I don't think he is fit enough to play AFL. Was walking around as though he had a back injury.

Shame about Johnson fracturing his fibula. Hopefully he will play a big part in the Eagles 2004 campaign.

I hope its adkins, I think he's been good this year when he's got the chance!

Along with Staker, (who I was sure was our most exciting draft prospect since the first interclub), Selwood looks promising, which suggests he'll round out a pretty decent draft for us.

Selwood has been extremely impressive in the WAFL, and you get the impression that he might be the sort who will adapt quickly to AFL level- great size for a midfielder at 188cm, physically he never shirks the issue, but what I like the most is he seems to havea touch of quarterback about him- more often than not, he makes the right decision when under pressure, and seems to have that rare knack of finding time to dispose of it, even when there are people right on his hammer.
Selwood sorta looks like a bigger, more physical version of Cousins- at least at WAFL level. I'd love to see him get a game as a backup midfielder, possibly this week. Given his size, he might be worth a run as a tagger, just to see how disciplined he can be.

It's nice to promote these young guys as being great talents and having potential to go straight into the midfield, but it's worth remembering there's a few guys in the side who probably should get that chance before them.

For one, Kasey Green showed for probably 2 and a half years in the WAFL that he was a great midfielder, and yet he is now a backman for the Eagles. He has the talent to move to that midfield, and doubtless will one day be given the opportunity.

Sampi is in a similar position. Although he has been typecast as a forward, I'm sure his goal is to become part of that midfield running brigade. There are others as well who have put in a solid contribution over the past few yeares, and yet have found it hart to crack it ( eg Wooden, Braun, Chambers)

Selwood deserves his chance, I have no doubt about that, but maybe his crack in the centre should come after these boys have been given a decent chance to make that role their own.

Green is an interesting one. He was indeed a pretty tasty looking WAFL midfielder for a number of years, but I wonder if he'll be in the backline permanently, simply because that is where he is most useful? I don't see it as a hierarchy of positions, where the ultimate goal of all our HFF/HBF players is to force their way into the midfield. I suppose a bit of 'ain't broke, don't fix it' ideology comes into it- Green has a been a pretty damn good midsized defender, and Sampi has been a revelation up forward- given the makeup of our team, why not leave them where it works? Except in the event of key njuries nobody, is going to break past the Embley/Cousins/Fletcher Gardiner/Kerr/Judd optimum lineup anytime soon, so the best the above can hope for would be a run off the bench, which seems to be a bit of a waste given how well they are doing where they are atm.

With Wooden out this week, and Brauny most likely promoted to the starting 22 in the absence of Embley, there are several interchange places available. Selwood's form can't be faulted, so it'd be very surprising if he wasn't seriously looked at. If he were promoted, I don't see the point, in eg, pushing Sampi into the midfield, and making Selwood play forward. Chances are, either would be a serviceable midfielder, but only one of them is already a very good small forward- go with what works.

All fair points Mead.

I do think that most AFL players of that size aspire to being in the midfield, but to throw Green or Sampi into there at the moment would definitely lessen their ground time, and probably their impact. It;s just worth keeping in mind that down the track these boys are always a chance to step up to that role.

There will definately be 2 outs this week:

Embley & Wooden

McIntosh jogged laps on Monday and is definately only 50/50 for St Kilda (one wonders if the club is saving him for the Rd 22 Derby as his Grand Finale)

I'd like Woosha to give Adkins another run - he has shown glimpses of good form in the limited amount of gametime he's had this year.

I'd maybe give Selwood the nod over Chambers.

Sure you're not thinking of Aaron Edwards, he looks like he could be cousins brother.

Edwards looks more like Cousins, but I think he was referring to Selwood's skills and physique in comparison to a Cousins in the WAFL, rather than looks. Selwood in fact looks nothing like Cousins in that photo, he in fact somewhat looks geeky.

no...as razor said i was talking about his style of play rather than physical appearance (the resemblance between edwards and cousins is rather uncanny actually..) what I meant though is if you look at Selwood when he gets possession, he has the same knack for finding space and balking oncoming defenders as cousins does.
