A chain like Bean Bar or Gloria Jeans can take advantage of bulk buying and have a broader range of products to cater for differing tastes.

However the storefront based guy I go to for my daily cup of jo does not have such a large supply chain and thus can not take advantage of such strategies.

His cost base in terms of unit production is quite similar to the guy who sells from the cart in the Mall. However his overhead is larger as he has to pay staff and rent on his accommodation.

Also a pain to make. Hence the rise in pod coffee, so you can (sort of) get the taste without the effort of a proper machine.

I really like the way in the US in the hotels they just have those big lukewarm plunger things that you pump coffee out of into your paper cup. Every couple of hours a minimum wage worker waddles through and refills it.

Then the non-dairy creamer and swizzle stick: Glorious to take a big cup with you in the morning.
