Saw this on reddit. Thought? Anyone want to take the design and update?
Red and yellow under the wings taken away?
Stolen from a Trans Am?

I will never buy any piece of Crows merch with that logo, and as it is each year I send my members scarf/hat up to my Grandmother because I will never wear it

I am the same, and so are the 3 guys I go to the games with in Melb. Until they change it I'm too embarrassed to be seen wearing anything with that on it. We were joking about what would have happened if we won the GF with all the merchandise that would have been produced using the Raven.

Ok, I've been thinking about this a fair bit, and I feel that AFC have a problem with all the different elements of their branding working together.
So what is the main criteria for a 'new' logo?
  • Does it need 'Adelaide Crows' on it (Or Adelaide Crows Football Club)?
  • Should it only involve primary colours?
  • Are cartoon-y images off-limits, or just less preferable than a more 'professional' image?
  • Does that messay monogram need to be involved?
  • Do the 'hoops' need representation?
It's pretty obvious that they can't all be incorporated into the same logo... So which combination would look best for a professional sports club?

Using the comparison with Collingwood our logo is is a cheap and nasty cartoon IMO.

Driving around Melbourne at this time of year, weeks out from the start of the season you see plenty of AFL stickers on cars. They all look pretty good, even the little Dees guernseys on the number plates. Then I cringe as I remember the cartoonish abomination that we now have as a logo, which I am embarrassed to have anything to do with. Surely it's not too hard to find some better alternatives AFC, this thread is littered with half a dozen that have been whipped up in 1hr that are better than the Baltimore Raven we appear to be stuck with. Some people say that the club has had bigger priorities to focus on (Adelaide Oval deals, Player renegotiations, new social club) this argument will never go away, but at some point they need to listen to the feedback the logo change is required here to look like a professional club, not a u/12 kids team
I may be biased here, but: please do not impugn the reputation of the Baltimore Ravens logo by associating it with the monochrome monstrosity that is the Crows logo. The Crows logo looks like a first-year graphic design student tried to rip off the Ravens logo, but missed everything that makes the Ravens logo good (why is the beak the same color as the head? why is it pointing down? why does it look so sad?).

Haha thanks for the feedback. Anything specific?
It’s just a bit bland, lacks detail.. something. Yellow outline not necessary.
Peak looks out of place, ruins the symmetry you’ve created.
If you could incorporate a crow that has red and yellow “streamers” coming out of its wing(s) think it’s pretty close.

Found this on the internet. A designer by the name of Brandon Williams had a go at re-designing the Baltimore Ravens logo.
All I have done is change the purple to blue. 1000% times better than the piece of shit we ended up with.

Thanks, much more useful! I'll have a muck around on Illustrator.

I disagree about the need for symmetry with the head/beak. If you look at most emblems/logos incorporating animal heads (specifically bird heads), they're often not symmetrical.

I see your point about detail, though. In fairness, my purpose was to create something simple enough to be easily recognisable and transferrable to different placement (jumpers/caps/business cards/the crest on a club champion jacket). I guess that being 'bland' as opposed to 'simple and effective' is a fine line; will have another crack, though.

I think your design has promise but needs some navy.

Maybe:
o make the border of the shield thicker and in navy
o put some hoops where the main yellow section is (trial different hoop thicknesses to see what works)
o make the crow bigger, tail touching bottom of the shield and split the 1990 into a 19 and 20 on both sides of the crow (and in italic)

While on the logo, guess we can't do much about it in terms of the logo used on other merchandise but in today's DIY world, we could easily get our own designs printed as stickers. That way if a design catches on, the club might just have to adopt it :)

Anyone know if there's any legality stopping someone doing this and selling it at cost (of production) or maybe with just a bit extra for their troubles?

I would like an option for something like this on our merchandise, a plain monogram on its own or with AFC or Adelaide above like this.
Have the cartoon head for the people who like it but give us a non cartoon head option.
The Melbourne official polo on their site looks better than this knock off.

This is a good approach – before any design takes place a proper and extensive brief needs to be developed. If the brief isn't 100% on point, the design will never be a success.

To answer your questions:
  • Does it need 'Adelaide Crows' on it (Or Adelaide Crows Football Club)?
It should absolutely say "Adelaide Football Club" or "AFC". If we want to be considered an authentic football club and move away from the gimmicky/mascot version of what we are currently, we should be positioned as one.

  • Should it only involve primary colours?
I think white would be appropriate as well. The hoops should definitely feature as they are a defining visual part of our brand and history.

  • Are cartoon-y images off-limits, or just less preferable than a more 'professional' image?
Off limits if we want to be taken seriously. I think from a visual branding perspective we should be following suit from established EPL clubs more so than NBA/NFL. Manchester City rebranded recently and their entire brand, logo, apparel, kits and even website is top drawer.

  • Does that messay monogram need to be involved?
No. I think a monogram may be a feasible route which could be a more legible and consdered variation the of the existing.

  • Do the 'hoops' need representation?
100%.

There needs to be a further investigation into the visions and values of the club, target audiences etc to complete a comprehensive brief but these are the kind of questions we (or the club/external design agency) need to be asking.
