Adelaide Crows push for Thursday night matches

Convenient for those that work in the city.

Bloody inconvenient for those that don't.

Yeah, I work in the city and I have no children. Thursday nights is super convenient for me.

I can absolutely see how it is super inconvenient for a number of other people though (country members, families)

Sums it up well. I work just outside of the city so for these games, I need to decide whether to drive, or take PT to work on those days (which is 2 buses and a train, plus tram if I want to be lazy). Most people presented with that option would just take the car, thus Thursday games would actually be counterproductive in encouraging people to take PT to matches...

don't like it, what about the week beforehand? doubt the AFL would be so accommodating to allow us a decent break in between our games and we'd of course be the first ones to complain about a 4 day break

Hate Thursday matches (Monday for that matter as well).

Footy is always a weekend thing to me (and the weekend starts once I've finished work on Friday) doesn't feel right on the other days.

That's because Footy is rarely played on Mon-Thurs. If we make it a regular thing, it'd feel perfectly normal. Monday games are always a bit crap because the weekend is over and people are sad :( Footy on Thursday makes sense because people are up and about for the weekend :)

The concept is good but I personally wound never attend a Thursday night match

Thursday nights would probably attract a bunch more casual supporters who work in the city. If its at like 7:30/8 it gives people a chance to go out got a drink and dinner before hand which would probably mean a pretty good atmosphere.

[quote="Firewalker, post: 30717654, membernight games it's only twice a year I don't really mind, but it does kind of become a slight non-event if that's the case[/quote]

Yeah agree with this. There are Thursday night games already at the start of the year and around byes. There will be a couple a year so its not really anything new for the competition. Surely this is not the best we can hope for from the fixture.

I love watching thursday night games. Id be very happy with this.

Agreed, I don't like Mondays, but I like the idea of Thursday night games. Thursday it's nearing the end of te week and very ones hanging out for footy, Mondays just making them wait longer and disrupts the strt of the week.

Night games are one of the best ways to get national exposure and the AFL have been increasingly denying us access to these premium time slots. This could be a great way to work our way back into this market.

I certainly don't think we should do it every week, but twice a year could work well.

They did say not all of them will be home games, but that we are trying to get as many home and away games which will be good exposure especially if they are nation wide free to air.

I like the time slot, not Mondays as has been said the waiting around is no good. But Thursdays is good, no time slot is going to suit everyone, for a lot Thursday night is better than Saturday afternoons with sports commitments for example. Some people have to work weekends.

My only worry is that if the different time slots don't work for certain groups do we have enough spare seats to attract more people or will there be a lot of no shows. If it's only 2 nights a year surely most people would make the effort to get there. I don't like getting up early on a Saturday for the mid day games, I'd still go haha.

Oh well don't worry too much if it's a success well only have them for a year anyway.

here come the country member excuses again..

Come on mate that's a cheap shot and your're better than that. Thursday night for country folk would be a pain.
I think Nick85 mentioned that his father lives in the country and its a 2.5 hour trip each way. With a 7.30pm - 8.00pm timeslot that would mean he wouldn't get home till well after midnight and we haven't even factored in the time he would need to leave to get to the game.

yeah i get that..

but the country members make up a small minority of our season ticket holders. to say no on account of just them is plain stupid

i also mentioned in the other thread i was also a country member. i've never used the excuse of a timeslot for not going to a match, because to be honest, if that was an issue, friday nights would be the worst timeslot available - and we all know friday night football is the holy grail of timeslots

lets stop playing the victim here, and embrace the potential change. remember, the afl/vfl were very much against night football on a friday night, until the kangaroos pioneered it in the mid 80's. we could have the same legacy

Great idea, but it does make it hard if you had kids you wanted to take. Would consider it if it was a couple times a year. Would like to see more than one Friday night game played.

Best case study for this move is the West Coast Eagles, who have, since the re-introduction of the bye, played a Thursday night game every year. Now there's a lot more to the success or otherwise of a timeslot than crowds, but that is one very measurable metric. Their crowds 2011-2013 (Thursday night games in bold)

2011
Rd 1 v North Melbourne: 35,878
Rd 3 v Sydney: 37,288
Rd 6 v Melbourne: 36,298
Rd 8 v Fremantle: 40,567
Rd 9 v Bulldogs: 37,308
Rd 11 v Gold Coast: 36,815
Rd 13 v Port Adelaide: 35,059
Rd 16 v Geelong: 40,164
Rd 20 v Richmond: 38,106
Rd 22 v Essendon: 38,253
Rd 24 v Adelaide: 36,062

The number looks low, but you also need to keep in mind the opposition. It is in about the same region as other unattractive opponents (North, Port, Crows). Pass mark.

2012
Rd 2 v Melbourne: 35,674
Rd 4 v Hawthorn: 40,080
Rd 6 v North Melbourne: 37,202
Rd 8 v St Kilda: 38,174
Rd 9 v Fremantle: 40,905
Rd 12 v Carlton: 34,224
Rd 14 v Gold Coast: 34,592
Rd 16 v Sydney: 39,152
Rd 18 v Brisbane: 35,767
Rd 20 v Geelong: 37,812
Rd 22 v Collingwood: 40,527

This is where it gets alarming. Their lowest home crowd of a year where they spent the whole year near the top of the ladder, against a massive Victorian opponent.

2013
Rd 2 v Hawthorn: 38,389
Rd 4 v Carlton: 38,674
Rd 6 v Bulldogs: 36,163
Rd 8 v North Melbourne: 38,146
Rd 10 v Richmond: 37,781
Rd 14 v Essendon: 36,451
Rd 16 v Fremantle: 39,839
Rd 17 v Sydney: 35,166
Rd 19 v Gold Coast: 32,140
Rd 21 v Geelong: 34,394
Rd 23 v Adelaide: 29,416

Another pretty alarming one. Ignore the last 3 or 4 crowd figures as it became pretty clear by that stage that their season had gone off the rails. Fremantle aside, Essendon are probably West Coast's biggest rivals, it was a massively controversial game in light of Jobe Watson's disclosures on the couch that week, and they only just eclipsed the crowd they got against the Bulldogs a few weeks earlier. In contrast, Essendon was third to Fremantle and Geelong in terms of WCE home crowds in 2011.
