After getting the Victory pack yesterday I decided to watch this match cos I hadnt seen it more then once. What I saw was the single worst display of tackling I have ever seen in my life. It was seriously that bad. At one stage Eagles broke through 8 tackles in a row in one play. 4 in a row by Chad Fletcher. I cant believe no one has mentioned it before. I think for every 1 tacke you made about 4 more were broken. Not one player out there (maybe bar Mattner) stuck there tackles

Theres no excuses either. It aint as if you have a young small bodied midfield they just dont know how to tackle. You really need that Stenglein/Kirk/McDonald type player in the middle. Maybe move Mattner in the middle or draft one with your first pick this year. If Adelaide ever want to get to a GF with this list and play solid finals footy against either Eagles or Swans they need to improve there tackling tenfold.

I wouldn't disagree that our tackling can be soft at times - but I don't think it's the one factor keeping us out of a GF. Pace in the Midfield and forwards who can take contested marks are far more the issue IMO.

By the same token - it must be acknowledged that we finished second and lost to the eventual Premier by a kick in a Prelim.

While that is bitterly disappointing - it's not slash and burn time.

.....but thanks for your concern....:) ..:thumbsu:

It single handidly cost you the game. I doubt you have seen or ever will see it but the tackling was THAT bad I had to make a thread about it. I wouldnt accept it at u15 level never mind during a prelim final

I do tend to agree somehwat. I suppose being winners you are in a place to criticise. Yes many a tackle was broken but I am sure we can rectify the situation. Thanks for your input. :thumbsu: :)

it didn't singlehandedly cost us the game -

- I was at the game - and I've watched it twice since....there were many other factors.

your under15 comment is moving this thread from a constructive converation to your usual style.........so just keep a check on that.....;)

Its a fair point IMHO. I have been less that impressed with our tackling this year. Sure there were games when it was top notch but generally its been disappointing. Even Mattner wasn't as good a tackler as last year while the like of Bode and Reilly were our best this year.

Some players definetly need to work on their tackling technique. Some pace would help as well.

I guess we beg to differ. I still think it did. IMO its got a bit to do with the midfield mix. IIRC Thompson at Melbourne was a fine tackler. Id start the 3 as Goodwin Thompson and one of Mattner/Johncock. Hudson will help as hes a good tackler for his height but theres still a long way to go in that department

to be quite honest I think when you are chasing Judd, Kerr, Cousins etc......most teams are made to look very ordinary in the tackling dept. If you let them get the ball with any space - they cut you up.

Fantastic thread, yep brilliant.

I agree its not the most fantastic thread , I can handle constructive criticism from an opposition supporter if I belive they are being fair.

I have to say - I thought our tackling in the finals cost us

against WC our inability to hold a tackle was terrible - I can recall Cousins getting jip and shouldered instead of tackling and he gave the handball which resulted in a goal. Judd did a similar thing on the outerside where he ran around 3-4 crows to get a goal and from Memory so did Kerr.

hopefully over the off season they get their tackling back to a good level

I thought our first half our tackling and pressure was great but the second half as the score reflects our tackling was woeful.

Usually when you are exhausted you find it a lot tougher to apply a good tackle as you aren't able to get your body in the position you like it to be and you end up lunge tackling. Meaning that you only are tackling with your arms instead of hitting the opponent with your body and then wrapping them with your arms.

Simply put we seemed to tire in the second half and hence our tackling intensity dropped.

I think it is a valid point.

Our tackling in that game was not good enough, as I was watching it I commented that we could not lay an effective tackle.

I think that game was an exception as I think our pressure and tackling on the ball carrier was very good throughout the year.

Embers, how about you get hit by a Mattner tackle, and then come back and talk. The guy single handedly outted two Brownlow Medallists for the rest of their seasons not last season, but the year before....Harvey and Crawford....

Having said that, we normally are not bad, finals was a little disappointing, but sh1t happens.

Tired players tackle poorly and we played tired in the 2nd half despite our much vaunted fitness and tapering methods.

Did we tackle like schoolboys? Unfortunately I'd have to agree we did.

Did it cost us the game? Probably

There were a few times throughout the year that I thought our tackling was poorly executed. I can't recall specific examples, but I remember watching games and thinking **** that was bad.

I know Bode was one of our highest tacklers, but I think for tackling efficiency he was pretty poor. Pro-Stats each week give a % ranking for tackling efficiency, but I can't be stuffed checking them. I seem to recall Bode's not being that high.

I don't think our tackling was too bad early on. In fact, I remember it being really good in the first few minutes, but it was a drastic drop off, particularly after half time and it cost us dearly.

You're trolling must be softening Embers. We're mostly agreeing with you. ;)

Mattner to the midfield will help and another year and a bit more meat on van Berlo will go a long way because those two are the best tacklers in the team.

Single-handidly cost us the game? I think a certain injury to a certain ruckman may have also been a major factor;)

What single handedly cost us the game was the poor umpiring.

The tackling in the 3rd term WAS an issue to be sure, West Coast lifted their intensity, and we didn't match them. There is no doubt that we win games when our tackling sticks... but this is not the sole reason that we lost.

I beleive that Craigy could take a lead from some of the other clubs that have had specialists come in to help conduct tackling sessions.

Several clubs have used Jujitsu etc to help with takedown/tackling techniques. This is something that should be explored if we want to improve in this area.

Obviously some the techniques are modified to fit the rules of Football but there is plenty to be learnt if you ask me.

It seems Craigy is a little left field in his thinking so lets hope he adopts something in the off season to improve this part of our teams game. I think you would all have to agree that tackling was one area we went backwards in this year.

That could have more to do with the fact that we were dominating much of our games for much of the year. Hard to lay a tackle when you always have the ball!

It's true, our tackling wasnt great in the Prelim. i spent quite a bit of time yelling at the crows players to tackle. bode and marty were about the only two who consistently made their tackles stick. Porps i think, from memory, was about the next best in the tackling department. but i dont think its a huge problem, our pressure and tackling earlier in the year and also against melbourne and freo at the end of the year was exceptional. Bode was in the top 10 in the league for tackles this year as well. i think it was more a case of poor decision making that cost us the game. and i know its no excuse but having our best leader out didnt help either. in terms of players coming through with a bit of pace and tackling ability, Mattner, Porps and Douglas are all fairly quick and they can all lay a good tackle.

Sorry but i can't agree, regardless of time in possession our tackling was not as good this year as it has been.
