Just wondering what Adelaide fans think of my idea. I've posted this on a couple Architectural forums.

Not a development but a little bit of fun on my behalf. Since the Adelaide Oval development has potentially opened itself up for futher redesign since the demolision of the George Giffen Stand (which was intended to remain during the current development but proved unsafe), I thought I'd slap together a scematic from an older design i was once working on. This plan would retain the Old arched brick wall of the western stand and the north hill including scoreboard but totally rebuild everything else. It is all to scale.
I estimate the capacity to be about 55 000 seats with extra standing room on the banks.

*I used the South Australian State Colours of Red, Royal Blue and Yellow to illustrate different seating.

In Australian Football / Cricket mode the northern end is kept open to preserve the popular grass banks, view of the Moreton Bay figtrees and the Cathedral in North Adelaide. The Yellow Seating represents temporary and retactable seating. The Royal Blue seating is Boxes and Suites. Football field dimensions are the slightly lager than ANZ Stadium in Sydney 162m / 118m.

In Soccer / Rugby mode the ground tier has been moved 15m forward with a hydraulic concourse filling the gap between ithe back of the tier and the stucture proper (same as Stade de France) the yellow seating surounding the ground tier is temporary seating on the hydraulic concourse. In this pic a temporary northern stand is inplace squaring off the northern goal end, only necessary for major events like the FIFA WC.

A rough section and plans of the movable ground tier I did a few months ago before the designs resurection.

OR build a new stadium..........Yeah i know......it's Adelaide.....next i'll be saying turn Victoria Square into a actual usable piece of space or question why our major Bus Terminal smells like a open urinal....or why does the Train station look like a rundown scaletrix...or why <insert a few other 100 things>.....great plans i am sure not disrespecting your time and effort Pj, just sick and tired of stuff that will never happen in this town and when they do ever occur it's a half arsed attempt......one way Southern Expressway anyone???

I agree Trev. I heard yesterday the next Vic Sq suggestion was coming up which includes a roundabout!!!! They should close it off and copy the Fed Sq concept from the Vic's.

As for Adelaide Oval, great idea's. It's a shame they just don't do the whole thing properly instead of doing it in parts, where certain stands will be obselete eg bradman stand!

I can't see any further redevelopments happening at Adelaide Oval considering the money they are forking out currently. Nice idea though.

Just on the soccer, I think people are getting too ahead of themselves the way they are talking about hosting the 2022 world cup as a shoe-in for this country. We haven't got it yet. Just like with the olympics, it's all about who can offer the largest bribe to the governing body:rolleyes:.

If we had a bigger soccer stadium, would Adelaide United fill it? They seem to get decent attendances at Hindmarsh currently. Upgrading Hindmarsh would be difficult seeing as it is built on a postage stamp size block of land.

I like the concept, however the cost it would take to build it would be very expensive and building a brand new one with a roof would be the better option if spending that much

I play Football (Soccer) and i am amazed that people want a bigger stadium for what is affectively a niche sport in this state. Even if we win the World Cup Bid, Australia only plays 3 group games. I cant see Soccer Australia forgoing Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane/Perth for Adelaide.

Any World Cup must have a certain number of venues with a certain minimum capacity across a variety of cities. (Not sure what the actual numbers are - tried looking it but couldn't find anything...)

That goes for all games, not just the ones involving the host nation.

Something like 10 cities with 40 000+ all seater stadium. If Adelaide Oval is to be considered for the world cup, a design similar to the OP would have to be adopted.

If Adelaide is ruled out as a WC venue, I can't see any bid succeeding

8 stadiums
only 1 city allowed to have 2
currently 40,000+ but it is expected to be more for future events
at least 2 60,000+ (to host semi's)
and only 2 oval stadiums allowed, rest must be rectangular

I like it. But sadly know it will never get any further than this thread.

I reckon in 50 years time AO will be a hodgepodge of stands around an oval that will be direlect and never used. But hey, at least we kinda kept it the way it looked in the 1920s:rolleyes:. Bit like my old man's axe, the one I have replaced the head and handle.

Cheers.

So it would probably be something like:

Melbourne (two stadiums)
Sydney
Brisbane
Perth
Adelaide
Regional NSW (Newcastle, Gosford or Wollongong)
Regional Qld (Gold Coast or Townsville)

FWIW, I'm on the side of building a new stadium rather than destroying Adelaide Oval.
FFA will probably also try and classify SYdney and Parramatta as two cities, and have ANZ Stadium as the stadium of Parramatta

but there is also requirements on accomodation as well, which will require upgrades in the regional location/s

and I also beleive it's required the airports have to be able to cope with the extra traffic of 40,000+ people going in and out of a stadium.

It's not all about Stadiums.

if it's just Stadiums Australia will find it tough to get. Add to the fact of all the infrastruture needs in the city as well, it's almost impossible when we're fighting with England, USA, Russia, Spain/Portugal, Netherlands/Belgium/Luxembourg (Dont know if they're [Luxembourg] in it) and Japan (we probably have Indonesia, Mexico, South Korea and Qatar covered)

then there's also the politics behind it

the AFC will probably try to get rid of three of the Asian bids to stop stealing votes off each other, and then use the one remaining nation and say something like (to one of the other confederations), We will get all AFC nations (who vote) to vote for you if everyone votes for our nation for the other World Cup
