Adelaide's decline

One top drawer mid would change their look a fair bit.

There's also still the place holder types, spuds like Keays etc. probably useful when you are in the build phase but need to be pissed off when you get serious.

One ?

Port is currently rolling with rozee , butters , jhf, wines , boak , drew

Brisbane - Dunkley , Neale zorko mcluggage Lyons

Freo - serong Brayshaw young Fyfe

Sydney - Warner rowbottom mills Heeney gulden

Giants - green Kelly coniglio

The crows are way more than one high end mid away from that kind of midfield talent.

Having said that clubs have accrued midfield talent quickly ie rozee butters jhf / serong Brayshaw young / Warner rowbottom mills gulden …

Can Adelaide replicate that?

We used to think our recruiting and development were good, with scores like Rory Laird picked from the Rookie Draft and Rory Sloane picked at 44 in the National Draft. Yet we've now had many high draft picks in the last ten years, and squandered most of them on players like Jordan Gallucci, Lachlan Murphy, Chayce Jones and Shane Macadam.

That we traded in Isaak Rankine and Jordan Dawson was more luck than anything - the go-home factor. The go-home factor has definitely been a net negative for the club over the years.

For some odd reason, our recruiters haven't focused on the midfield in what feels like forever.

Leigh Matthews said during the broadcast of our first H&A game in 2015 that good midfielders are a dime a dozen, but quality key position players are hard to find. I agree. But at the same time, you can get away with having more average forward and backlines if your midfield is top-shelf. When your midfield is weak, everything else goes to shit. Our midfield is weak.

I’m a spine believer but gee Sydney are looking very good and on paper that spine has some average names not too mention google wouldn’t even know their kpps on the list outside their 22.

I think with high picks you just take best available.

There are lots on our board who still say things like “why did we take two hbfers in Clark and Coffield, at 7 and 8, when we needed “mids”?” despite the fact that years later, there was only about 1 genuine “mid” taken in the next 30 picks who’s done any good.

Whereas we famously took McCartin over Petracca because we needed a key forward and thought it was getting too expensive to go to market and buy one.

Just take best available and figure the rest out later. You’re not going to build a whole, balanced list in two or three drafts.
Always go best available. An elite mid is better than an ok key position player (and vice versa) and needs on a list can change dramatically and quickly anyway.

Besides, most smalls and KPPs can learn to play multiple positions.

Nicks has never impressed me.

Can't understand why Adelaide renewed him. What was the rush?
I agree they should have left it a little while. I suppose they have a better view of what goes on in the background than us but it’s looking more and more like this will be his fifth season with no finals.

lol what?

Geelong and gcs are not top 6 sides, at best either might sneak into finals. more likely to be 8th-14th.

both teams also played poorly and were very beatable.
Suns more likely to be a Top 6 side rather than Geelong, but Geelong will win a lot of games at home.
too early in the season to say though.

Their decline parallels Port's, just 10 years split a part, but Port were able to get back into playing finals within 6 seasons, whereas The Crows haven't recovered since their 2017 GF loss. Their competitive culture and team closeness was completely destroyed during that 2018 preseason. Although, they're a very inexperienced list, they need management who can bring that connection to the players.

Well, no, not true. I didn't know it existed.

To explain to posters in here, My Tilly came into our post-Cats-loss thread and 'contributed' this (my highlights of the comments I objected to):
Hope I'm allowed to comment but I'm really surprised by these comments and I read it all the time online by opposition supporters.
I don't think you guys were as poor as what you are making them out to be. When De Koning, Kolodjashnij and Henry are playing well, that is when we can allow Stewart the freedom to do his thing. We didn't have this last year as Henry was injured half the season.

It's the fittest our list has been for many years. They had a very strong summer.
Bruhn, Guthrie and Atkins are not stars but they are handy players to have come back into the team. This is the depth we have at the moment.

I would also say the inside knowledge Geelong received from Rahilly was invaluable. It looked as though every defender knew your forwards strength & weaknesses.
Those faux-innocent, disingenuous remarks suggested we (Crows supporters) should not be so hard on the pathetic garbage that the Crows put up yesterday, because the Cats are, OH, just soooo good, soooo fit, have great depth etc etc.

I told him to p1ss off with his winner's condescension, hence his cheap shot above at the start of this post and tagging me in here.
We know the Crows have declined and any footy supporter who's gone through an extended period of underachievement/failure knows how much we hate it,
BUT
fake-consoling us after that loss because we're not that bad, it's just that the Cats are so good?
Yeah/nah. Shove it.

Hindsight being 2020..... not the year though.... Crows could of got some of those mids bolded and Highlighted.

2009 the crows could of got fyfe but got Daniel Talia instead.

In 2011, Crows could of chosen Lachie Neale but even then, No one knew Neale would be a bolter.

In 2016 crows got Jordan Gallucci. Port got Sam Powell Pepper and Willem Drew after Gallucci. Will Hayward, a North Adelaide product was pick 21.

Port did well in that 2018 draft getting Zac Butters and Xavier Duursma. Dockers chose sam Sturt at pick 18, Xavier Duursma went literally the next pick.

Crows had pick 6 in 2019, chose Fisher McAsey. Dockers used picks 7 and 8 on hayden young and Caleb Serong.

-Fyfe
  • Neale
  • Sam Powell Pepper or Drew or Hayward
  • Hayden Young or Caleb Serong

1 good mid each year taken would of improved the crows list gradually.

pick any 3 or 4 mids on that list, crows would easily made finals in 2023.

I think crows overachieved last year. Very similar to Port in 2013. Both had elite fitness due to Darren Burgess. They also had the best injury list until about round 15 onwards.

They have had 6 years to rebuild and haven’t drafted one elite midfielder. Very fortunate Dawson and Rankine wanted to come home otherwise they would still be bottom 4.

How on earth would anyone find that offensive?

They spoke about cats fitness , ability to use stewert how they like and impact of a coach.

They'll be fine, just came up against a bloody good side is all.

Funny thing is I had Geelong back in the top 8. Remember the Cats finished in the top 4 or better, 14 times from 2004 to 2022 and won 4 premierships in that time. 2023 was a struggle, injuries, retirement of Selwood but I am sure they will become finals contenders again, they are a superbly run organization.

The Nick Davis game in 2005 hit them hard in 2006, but they recovered and what a team they became.

Adelaide have not dealt with adversity very well over their history. For example the 1994, 2003, 2007, 2010, 2013 and 2018 seasons. And maybe this year they haven't dealt very well after what happened with the messed up call in the Swans game last year, some players are flat and unmotivated right now.

The bloke cracked the shits and went on a rampage after I posted that.

Bizarre turn of events and he clearly has issues.

Shove it.
You are a sad little man CrowBloke

Hopefully your mob can get by Freo as a 0-3 start would effectively mean curtains for season 2024.
