St Kilda’s summer train-on rookie Jack Hayes has put himself in the picture for an unlikely Round 1 spot as the Saints prepare to elevate him onto their list.
The Herald Sun understands Hayes will be put onto the St Kilda list as a 194cm ruck-forward who has been totally dominant at SANFL level.
SANFL star Hayes is the only player pushing for one of two vacant list spots at St Kilda and Saints players believe he is a strong chance to win a position early in the year in the senior side given his brilliant summer form.
The 194cm utility has taken all before him in the SANFL, captaining the state team, finishing equal third in the Magarey Medal and winning the Jack Oatey Medal as Woodville West Torrens claimed its second consecutive premiership.

Both SANFL Showdowns are curtain raisers before AFL Showdowns.
Sturt and Centrals will also play our SANFL side as curtain raisers before AFL games.
With North playing their 2nd match against us in Whyalla, it seems that clubs are increasingly happy to offload the 2nd home game against our SANFL side elsewhere. If our new home will have a space for AFLW matches, I wouldn't be surprised if we end up hosting SANFL matches there too.
You'd think Port Power would be able to play curtain raisers at Adelaide before their games as well, but elect not to.
The pokie money, catering money etc from Alberton too good to pass up.
Feels inevitable we will get SANFL home games when we have our new home base. I'd like to see a 50/50 split between games at our new base and curtain raisers at Adelaide Oval.

Are the AO games all curtain raisers?
The cost of opening up Adelaide Oval is expensive which might be there reason. Obviously the SMA cut back bars and food stalls until the main game but just the gate and event staff costs a heap of money.
I think you might be right though, about 50/50 seems right. It's just unfortunate the early game has to be finished so long before the main game.

Our games are some of the least profitable home matches for the SANFL clubs. This season we have 3/8 clubs giving up their second home match against us for an alternate location (North in Whyalla, Sturt and Centrals at Adelaide Oval).
That, and the fact that by the time we get our new facility there will be less of an outcry for us having home games, will almost certainly see us hosting home games down the track.

Least profitable home matches for the SANFL clubs but (unless they actually lose money having our games at their grounds), they'd still make money they otherwise wouldn't, wouldn't they? Maybe they can get more money from country location games.
As for letting us have games at our own ground, those clubs may not get anything.

Except our games aren’t profitable. Some clubs don’t even bother with things like pre-game Presidents lunches for our games because it’s not worth it financially

Geez... if they're making a loss that's likely to improve our chances of getting home games at our own home ground (assuming we're not in some AFL reserves comp).

If he does sign on as an SANFL player, we then have the option of playing him if we are short on numbers covid wise?
