Hey guys.

A thought just popped into my head as I was looking over the threads here - specifically for information on Walker/Sellar.

Could the Crows field a 2s team in the SANFL like the pies and geelong do in the VFL?

Would it work?

I don't know much about the SANFL.

I've had this discussion with my mate and he seemed to think that the other teams would be competitive against an Adelaide 2's team. I very much disagree and think that it could be not as bad, but similar to Sydney in the Canberra league. Also would Port Adelaide want all their young draftees in the one team. Bloody oath they would.

I have heard plenty that it would be the death of the SANFL but why exactly?? You would ideally bring in 3 teams, adding in a Port Lincoln or Darwin team to get rid of the bye. My thoughts is that it would make the league stronger and no doubt you would get plenty of supporters to AFC 2 and PA2 games so it would help the bank balance of the league

On a separate but linked idea, a few friends have discussed the idea of linking the local leagues and AFL akin to the premership in the UK. The top league side from WA, SA, NSW, Tas etc would be promoted, ideally into a AFL 2's side, yes this means West Coast and Freo would most likely be relegated this year. Its a far out idea I know

Depending on who the top up players are, I wouldn't expect the Crows or Power to get much higher than mid-table if they played in the SANFL. For example, last week the team would've been something like:

F: Jacky Tippett Walker
HF: Sellar Hentschel Cook
C: Kite Otten Curnow
HB: Armstrong McGregor Petrenko
FB: Martin Gallman Moss
R: Griffin Johncock Dangerfield
I: ? ? ?

The squad would have to be something closer to 60 for this to happen. I doubt the SANFL clubs would let their best U/18's be top up players and even if they did, what happens when those players are missing for 6 weeks of the season for the carnival?

If a fair way can be worked out, I wouldn't be against the Crows and Power (get rid of the Magpies) entering the SANFL and the competition to be 10 teams. It would be far more competitive and nothing like the Sydney/Canberra situation.

If the money was available, perhaps the Crows and Power could have a back up squad made up of project players from overseas or remote areas around the country. They would still need to be close to the standard of SANFL to remain competitive though.

Is it would be better for the Crows, but it would be shit for the SANFL. The SANFL own the Crows and Power licenses so it won't happen. Which is good, anything hurting the SANFL is a bad idea, the Crows be damned.

Yeah, the main issue is the top up players. Where do they come from, how many would both clubs need, will their be teams in the reserves competition as well, where do they seek players from, where do the players go when the AFL side has a full squad of players fit. They'd need a list as big as the SANFL clubs themselves.

Considering there has been times when both our clubs have been done to 2-3-4-5 fit men to choose from, it could cause some headaches. But I guess the main one is, where would these new clubs find 40 players each from? How would Port & Crows 2s pick supp players each year? The non-AFL players...who pays their wages?

I would support the concept of a Crows reserve side in the sanfl

I agree, the crows would finish about mid table, people need to consider, the majority of these players are developing players and the crows agenda would be to develop players in the roles that they were recruited for, winning would not be the highest criteria

Lets take Sellar, we could play him CHF week in week out no matter what, the score board is a non issue, the benefit is that Sellar can spend significant game time learning the role we want him to play at AFL level

but if there were too many injuries, the 2s wouldn't even have enough players to choose a full squad from...and you'd be playing reserve players who aren't ready for SANFL, but the idea of all the crows 2s in a single team does sound interesting to watch.

Crows/Port players spend all their time in the one environment, not oscillating between two teams.
Evens out the SANFL with 10 teams, eliminating the bye.

Cons:
Where do the supplementary players come from?
Crows/Port teams would be too strong and would dominate the competition (refer Crows vs Norwood pre-season games).
Would still have multiple players vying for one or two positions (eg when we had 5 ruckmen on the list).

At the end of the day, the SANFL see it as being detrimental to their competition and they're the owners of the AFL licenses. Just like the City stadium, it's never going to happen.

Crows 2's would not be too straong, the Crows v Norwood games were the crows 1st team not the 2's

the crows 2's have played sanfl teams in previous pre-seasons prior to the Crows v Norwood game and from memory the crows 2's have not dominated these games

my concern, the crows draft players and do not have full control over their development, Sellar is a prime example, how can Sellar develop as a forward when he is playing reserves as a ruckman

I can see where your coming from here, but if Sellar isnt good enough to play FF for a SANFL club, he should try his luck at another position, i think CHB is his best position.
I still think if the Crows had there own Reserves side and Sellar played CHF/FF he would get slaughted most weeks by oposition defenders.
He clearly isnt good enough yet to play up forward in SANFL.

Its not where he wants to play though, he can't just say "oh well, I'm not good enough for a KPF position maybe I'll trot down to CHB", its where his SANFL club wants to play him. Glenelg don't need him as a KPF, by the sounds they've got one of the best forward lines in the comp who work extremely well together, why would they want some bloke who barely trains with them and as such doesn't know the systems getting in their way, who at the moment isn't as good as their other forwards.

In a crows 2's side he could play forward all the time and would probably be the #1 or 2 option, players would be looking for him, something which doesn't by the sounds happen at Glenelg.

IMO a 2's side would be great, as I don't think the current situation is ideal for the AFL clubs, its not necessarily bad and does have its benefits, but given a choice the Crows and Port would probably prefer to have a reserves side.

To be even remotely viable however it would require the Power to take over he Magpies and probably either the Crows to take over a SANFL team, or perhaps get the Woodville/West-Torrens to split again or something.
