Opinion AFL 2023 Round 9 - Liked, learnt, hated

Liked - Watching the improving young Crows strut their stuff again. Said during the week that I thought they might do to the Saints what they did to the Blues a few weeks back and so it proved. They’re going to be tough to beat at home.

Learnt - Richmond still have a yelp left. Sure they were against a depleted side, but they showed glimpses of the old Tigers so they’ll trouble a few sides from here.

Hated - Evenly split between that horrendous Carlton-Doggies game at Marvel last night and the Swans performance yesterday. We’re nowhere near it and fully deserve our spot on the ladder right now.

Learnt: that the Giants are very boring to watch when Toby Greene isn't playing.

Loved: The games of Naicos, Cox, JDG & the list goes on.

Hated: when the Pies sit a game clear on top of the ladder, I don't have a hateful bone in my body. 🥰

Loved Pies win big - Blues, Bombers and Cats all lose!
Hated - The umps who still believe that Ginni is not entitled to any frees whatsover under any circumstances.

Hated - The umps who still believe that Ginni is not entitled to any frees whatsover under any circumstances.
Have to say that even as a neutral I have noticed this. It’s as if they’ve decided that since he pinched a few from them early in his career that they simply won’t pay them to him now no matter how clearly they are there.

People love to whinge about umpires when it doesn’t go their way

It feels l weird to have some calls go your way.

4 umpires has made zero difference to the quality of umpiring. Just umpire every game like the finals.

Hated
3 very uncompetitive teams, not sure there is enough talent to support a 19 and possibly a 20th team.

Stand rule still looks like netball

competition has three dud teams and it's not good for footy.
Part of that is just the cyclical nature of the competition with draft, salary cap, etc. Worth noting that 2 of those 3 "dud" teams have won flags within the past decade. There's always going to be someone struggling, it's just their turn right now.

Liked: Crows doing well for Nicks
Learnt: Mason Cox can be a good ruckman this season.
Hated: debut game cat starts on bench as SUB.

Liked: Crows. '22 and '23, they've been one of the best teams to watch. Good mix of dare and discipline. When it clicks, they're gonna be hard to stop.
Ill add Port too. SA footy is a year away from dominating imo

Learn: There's a top 3 this year and a bit of daylight to SA teams, then a bit more to rest of the contenders.
Lions, Dees and Pies are the standard.

Hated: Pies game on a sunday arvo on mothers day. Do better AFL schedulers. What a waste

Liked: Teams that don't slacken off when they have a team on the ropes.

Learnt: The chasm between the top and bottom teams is a lot wider this year. The Giants are stuffed until probably 2028 as the above average, out-of-contract players will be continually picked off by other teams due to the lack of progression/success which is a direct result of..........

Hated: GWS hierarchy who have negotiated long-term contracts with players who are clearly not value for money, to the detriment of the club's list. Would be very happy if those overpaid, far-too-comfortable-in-their-position players are dropped to the VFL for a lengthy spell.

Liked: Richmond beating last year's premier and then enjoying listening to the injury excuses/melts from Cats fans
Crow's win and the excitement it's generating in Adelaide

Learned: Don't schedule a second Friday night game starting halfway through the first. Begin the first game earlier and expect the second game to go late.
The second Friday night game to was done by the time everyone switched over from the first. Waste of a great concept.
Geelong won't win the flag this year.
Buddy is just taking up space. Should step aside for others.

Hated: Carlton blowing yet another season.
Tasmanian politicians not seeing the big picture and trying to sabotage the stadium deal. Would mean the death of foot in the Apple Isle.

Liked:
  • Richmond's win against Geelong
  • Essendon's competitiveness for a half against Brisbane despite being depleted
  • Fremantle and Adelaide standing up in big games

Learnt:
  • Adelaide are real contenders for the top 4/8 this year.
  • Richmond are not to be dismissed as easy-beats despite their ladder position. We played 5 games against the current top 8 and have the fourth-best percentage (104.73%) against them for a reason IMO. It's those pesky teams in the bottom 8 that are getting us.
  • St Kilda need to score more to sustain their ladder position and do something meaningful in finals. Max King coming in will help though.
  • Carlton really need to start going soon. Their remaining draw is not easy, and their performance against top teams has largely been underwhelming. Their season is slipping quickly at the moment.
