Opinion AFL 2024 Round 2 - Liked, Learnt, Hated

Liked - Can't say the Swans every week, so I'll give a shout out to the young North list. Thought they looked dynamic in the first half against Freo and will be very good in a year or two from now. Credit to Freo for weathering the storm and coming back to win that game too.

Learnt (well, reminded) - It's dangerous writing teams off after a week... a lot of people were bagging out the Dogs and even the Saints after round 1 losses. The Dees were copping it a week before that. All three are back in business in a big way.

Hated - Seeing so many decisions going to the score review. Can understand why the on-field goal umps are nervous about making a call - especially at Adelaide Oval - but I'm starting to wonder if there's any point to having them at all anymore? Back yourselves and make a decision!

Liked - North Melbourne. Yes they got overrun and yes there are many sides in the past that have been stacked with young players that occasionally show flashes of talent that ultimately don’t amount to much but gee they looked good when it clicked

Disliked (didn’t hate so much) - JUH taking that mark on the line at full time in the Dogs game. Yes he’s a key forward and they’re supposed to be goal hungry but that would have been something that pissed me off a bit if I was a fan. Without impacting the scoreboard a tremendous amount he had a game where he showed numerous times how exciting he is - crashed packs and flew for marks and tried to get himself into the game. Escorting that ball through the goal would have shown more than what marking and kicking it ever could have

Learned - probably not much that wasn’t already known although I suspect the pies might be done

Liked - Isaac heeney and Sydney look dangerous, flag favourites for mine

Learnt - Geelong are playing finals

Hated - Essendon edge lol.

Hated: our 1st quarter.
Yeah I couldn’t work that one out. They racked up a thousand marks across half back but completely played into Melbourne’s hands. Looked competitive for fair chunks of the game after that, so who knows what might have happened if they hadn’t conceded 5 unanswered goals at the start.

Crows are in big trouble in the next few years.

Their best players are all doing well but their younger players aren't doing enough.

How the * Adelaide picked up McAsey is beyond me, but for me I'm ******* happy.

Hawks and West Coast are bottom 2 for sure. Adelaide and North next, Gold Coast really pissed me off with that sub par effort. Could be another failed season.

Do not write off Brisbane. They're too good to fail. Collingwood not so much.

GWS are my best tip for the GF. Melbourne are also a threat.

Sydney, Port and Freo need to see more

Liked:
The Saints have some exciting talent to build around
GWS 3-0 despite Greene not having an impact so far this year

Learnt:
We've botched our rebuild by not drafting any elite midfield talent and our destined for some more dark times ahead
The Hawks are in no man's land
Geelong look like they'll return to the finals, they never stay down for long
The Eagles have one hand on the spoon

Hated:
The game plan of kicking to Tom Stewart
Re-signing a coach who has achieved nothing and never will this early in the season
Constant score reviews - I get it for the 50-50 reals but some real obvious calls were going upstairs.

Liked GWS doing well. Hope they win it all this year. Saints and Dogs impressive.

Hated...well we got belted but youngsters showing good signs. Wish Adelaide were doing better.

Didn't learn anything new/surprising, but Collingwood may not even make finals. Still early days, but if they're 0 and 5 I think you can rule them out.

Liked: Collingwood being shown up as an average premiership team by the Saints. There's no dynasty for this team.

Learnt: West Coast have a worst list than I thought and their games are an embarrassment to a professional competition based on equalisation.

Hated: Fremantle winning considering they ignored their supporters and took dirty money from fossil fuel polluters Woodside as their sponsors when they didn't need to.

Liked- Freo 2-0
Learned- NM doesn’t sell many tickets
Hated- Freo’s slow starts

Liked: Pies lose again, they have definitely lost that edge. I hope they never find it!

Learnt: The Swans and Giants might just be the two best sides in it this year?

Hated: Umpiring calls are mystifying enough from field umpires, but we are seeing ever increasing Goal Umpire hesitation and boundary umpires have lost the whistle!

AFL is turning into the NBA. We will see 50m runs without bouncing soon.

What can be the Slam Dunk equivalent for us ?

Cats are -13 in one less game.

Has to be a league wide conspiracy
I’m going to keep doing this all year.

Because we’re going to get shafted each and every game.

So if you don’t like it, just click that little “block” button.

But it won’t, will it.

More than likely it will even out, same as last year, where your differential was -0.4 free kicks per game, equal 8th in the league alongside….
The Cats.

In keeping with the theory that it’s a big interstate conspiracy: yes Port were the most heavily disadvantaged…. Just ahead of the Tigers and Roos, with the Suns and Hawks rounding out the top 6.

Gee if I didn’t know better I’d almost think that was an even distribution

We will finish down the bottom again as we have done for most of our existence and there will be yet another call in a close finals game to a Victorian club which will rob us of victory.

You don’t like it; no dramas.

Don’t *ing read it.

Not hard.

I just like dismissing pointless conspiracy theories.

So in 2023 you were equal 8th in the league for worst free kick differential.

In 2022 you were equal 9th for the worst free kick differential.

In 2021 you were 11th.

So for the last three completed seasons the WORST one you have had, saw seven teams with worse free kick differentials than the Giants. Even when you did struggle, do you not realise that it coincided with a period when you had actually started to grow physically as a side and acquired players like Mumford? Hell Mumford himself gave away almost 80 free kicks in a 20 game season. You don’t have a big enough supporter base for ‘noise of affirmation’ to play the role it plays for other sides

It’s a victim mentality

No it’s an issue that keeps getting ignored by all.

You don’t like it, don’t read it.

Liked: More winning scores over 100 (or very close to) continuing this season.

Learnt: Might only be round 2 (or 3 whichever way you look at it), but Clubs need to be far more critical of their "ageing" players. Sure, they may be stalwarts or even legends at their club, but it is apparent that many players are staying that one year, or maybe more, too long.

Hated: Too many score reviews. If for whatever reason ARC is unavailable, the goal umpires have become so reliant on technology saving their backsides, that they barely have the confidence or judgement to make a critical decision unassisted.

What issue mate?

‘Look this needs to be addressed.’

‘What does.’

‘The giants getting smashed by umpires.’

‘Ok let’s look at it. What’s your case.’

‘We get smashed by umpires.’

‘Can you show me how?’

‘Look at the numbers. We get smashed.’

‘Well ok it says here that in the last three years you’ve received more free kicks on average than you’ve given away.’

‘Yeah but-‘

‘Well that is a weak case. Do the numbers suggest that you are ranked close to the top of the league for the worst free kick differential in that time?’

‘Well, no. We were 8th, equal 9th with 2 other teams and 11th for worst differential. So in one year there was 7 teams worse off than us, the next year there was 8, the next year there was 10.’

‘Good. Next case please. I call Richmond vs Steven Hocking.’

maybe freo should look in to pokies.
Tiges stole 4.5million in 2023, destroying families and ruining lives.
Tiges with 80k+ members one of the biggest clubs in the land with recent success to help revenue surely can give up pokies.
I don’t condone Woodside that’s something the club and it’s members are working through but you should be investing all your energy toward your own club being on the right side of life.

Liked

Ross Lyon. He played his part in messing up the midfield badly last week. This weeks midfield overhaul was like night and day.
Saints - Everything i hoped they would be this season. Exciting youth coming on strong. Older brigade leading by example. Running powerhouse that is strong on the outside. Top four in sight.
Isaac Heeney - Longmire keeping Heeney on ball. He's a star in the guts and may take out the brownlow.
Geelong - They don't know the meaning of bottoming out. What will they do when the aging talls retire? Won't be an issue this year!
Tom Stewart is in beast mode.

Learned

Suns have to many deadbeats playing in the first 22.
Hardwick will have his work cut out fine tuning things.
Suns core is mighty strong however.
Luke Jackson will the be the MVP in the AFL.

Hated

Fritch over celebrates. Guaranteed high five and black slap even when crushing s**t opposition.
Hawks play style. I agree with First Crack. Slow, predictable, lots of numbers around the ball, nothing to kick to up forward as a result.
Sam Mitchell not playing Hustwaite yet he will play has-beens.

Liked: Geelong 2-0, 0-3 Owens for Collingwood and Richmond after 2 rounds :D
Learned: West Coast are in a world of pain and looking down the barrel of another 5 years of rebuild before they can do anything meaningful
Hated: The ARC :thumbsdown::mad:
