What a finals series we have ahead of us… and we still don’t even know who’ll be there! Difficult to remember a season where so few points separated so many sides in the eight, or one where you could make such a strong case for so many teams to have a genuine shot at the flag. First things first, let’s wrap (most of) Round 24…

Bombers v Blues, Thursday night: Not sure there’s ever been an Essendon-Carlton game that anybody cared less about. Even the supporters of the two clubs seemed to be shrugging their shoulders and streaming an episode of Love Island UK instead of watching the footy. Yawn.

Pies v Demons, Friday night: Early in the last quarter the Magpies were staring down the barrel, but they found their way out of it. Limping into the finals with a shocking form line it must be said, not to mention a few old man injuries too. Still, the post season is a whole new ball game and anything’s possible from the top 4. Not writing them off, much as I’m tempted to.

Port v Suns, Friday night: A fine send off for Boaky and Hinkleyey, but goodness me what a costly loss for the Suns. At genuine risk of blowing probably their best season ever with some indifferent form at the end. Surely they won’t miss out on finals with a loss to the Bombers… Surely.

North v Crows, Saturday arvo: The bruise-free Crows cruised for most of the afternoon and completely put the cue in the rack in the final term, which allowed the Xerri and Sheezel-led Roos to pile on some late goals. Reckon a five win season is unders for North, they simply have to win a few more next year. And hey, they only have to look to the Crows for inspiration… 15th in 2024 to first in 2025. Magnificent.

Tigers v Cats, Saturday twilight: Similar to the previous game, this was a top two side against one from the bottom three. Like the Crows, the Cats shut up shop in the final quarter and like the Roos, the plucky young Tigers put through a few late ones. Remarkable that the Cats have finished in the upper reaches of the ladder again. A well coached side that is far greater than the sum of its parts.

Eagles v Swans, Saturday night: The Eagles were actually in front at half time… then lost by 67 points. 13 goals to one after half time will do that. Diabolical one-win season for West Coast.

Giants v Saints, Sunday arvo: Thrilling finish. The Saints nearly extended their lengthy winning streak but Toby Greene wasn’t having any of it and hauled his team over the line. Suspect the Giants will be found wanting against one or two sides in the finals, but at their best they’re capable of serving it up to anybody. They only need to find that level for a few games, so who knows.

Dogs v Dockers, Sunday twilight: Usually twilight on Sunday is the graveyard shift, but there was something about the stakes being so high combined with the game being so late in the round that made this timeslot really work for once. It was a case of win and you’re in for the Dockers and Doggies, and it looked grim early for the Purple Haze. That was until everything turned on its head from the second quarter onwards. Ruthless from Freo to steamroll their way through the middle two quarters, then hold their nerve when the Dogs came at them again late. Plenty to suggest they won’t just be making up the numbers in September.

Lions v Hawks, Sunday night: Another nice little finals taster! The wayward Lions nearly kicked themselves out of it, but the Hawks couldn’t quite take advantage. It was a tight, tough game from both sides. Brisbane look dangerous in the top 4 given how good their best footy is, while the Hawks are still a slippery proposition from the bottom half of the eight.

Suns v Bombers, Wednesday night: Won’t be writing a wrap for this one, so let’s write a preview... Biggest game in the Suns history and they simply have to win it. It’s been a bad finish in the last couple of weeks but they’ve had such a good season and they deserve to be in the finals. That all changes if they can’t get it done in this one though.

Don’t forget to post your Liked, Learnt, Hated below… along with any other thoughts you had about Round 24!

Since 2000
No team has won the premiership from 4th position
9 times the winner has been first
8 times the winner has been second
6 times the winner has come from 3rd
1 times the winner has come from 5th
And 1 time the winner has come from 7th

Liked: The final 8 and 4 going right down to the wire, one game left and still unknown!
Learnt: The Dockers have had enough of missing out, their grit is driving them forward.
Hated: Nothing really, great weekend of footy (probably because I couldn’t watch the Eagles get smashed again)

Liked: kudos to our Melbourne based supporters you guys were loud as
Learnt:AFL wanted Coll in the top 4
Hated: the media narrative surrounding it was going to be us missing the finals, glad we were able to fight through that and win
i copped quite a lot of shit from my work mates because i confidently picked you guys to stand up and win . They gave me hell. But you could just tell the boys in purple were not going to waste this opportunity
Well done mate
Would love you guys to go all the way
With shai winning the normy

Liked: the drab back end to the H&A has come to an end.

Learnt: Missing finals makes extending Bevo a blunder. He's clearly what's holding them back. Scott, Hardwick, McRae get the Dogs in finals. Bont, Libba, Richards, Dale, English, Naughton, Darcy... And you can't make it. Concerning.

Hated: Ginnivan. Turd. w***er. So many more pejoratives to describe him.

Liked learned and hated all pretty much the same thing: Marcus Bontempelli.

Ok so he’s going to retire one day with a flag. That’s more than a lot of great players get. But he probably got it before he was at his best so maybe doesn’t quite mean ‘as much’ as it would mean if he were to have carried them to one over the last 7-8 years where he’s basically been consistently among the best 3-4 players in the comp.

Watching that last quarter today was to watch a player who is head and shoulders above the refuse he plays with week after week:
There are players with a similar skill level in his team. There are players with a similar level of physical attributes. There are players with a similar level of desire. But none have anything approaching his combination of them and I actually feel a considerable degree of pity for him that it’s likely to amount to nothing else between now and the rest of his career.

Let's hope history continues as usual this year then.

Of every AFL player to play the game, a small % win a premiership. Probably a few percent I would guess. So to even win it is something. He may be one of the best not to win a Brownlow, but imo that long list arguably contains more stars, including many of the greatest (Ablett, Matthews, Carey etc) than winners.

Friday night was particularly frustrating, as the Pies kept their top 4 chances alive due to classic Melbourne bottling it (if Melbourne had an ounce of clutchness they would've won), and Port (through the umpires) basically assured them less than an hour later.

Other than that only real positive was Brisbane winning.

I can't see Hawthorn winning it from here, whereas Flagmantle might be a possibility.

It’s a fair point and I sort of think of him like a lot of people thought of Johnathon Thurston in the NRL prior to 2015 - he had a title but he was a bench player for the Bulldogs rather than the main man for the Cowboys.

Bontempelli was more of a part of 2016 mind you, than Thurston was for the 2004 Dogs, but he has clearly gone to another level or 3 since then.

He was 20 when they won that flag. He’s had so much incredible footy since then, and been let down by what’s around him.

Yes no doubt he'd be frustrated. I always felt Bevo was/is overrated as a coach, sometimes great sides still win one with an average coach or despite them.

Still would be far better off than many, the likes of Ablett, Lockett, Richardson, Fyfe, Cripps...even Nick Riewoldt at St Kilda. I suppose the Fyfe fairytale still a remote possibility.

Its always been a mystery to me, as 3 and 4 get basically the same draw, and its not like theres such a gulf between 3rd and 4th usually.

I supposed it’d be more there’s a bigger gulf between 1 v 4 than 2 v 3 and winning week 1 is definitely a bigger leg up.
