But to do that, the club would have to be willing to endure a phase of getting to grip with that position. Like what happened with.........Lonergan.

Easier to get a grip playing that position when the greatest full back of the game is playing alongside you.

Still, I agree with the sentiments. We need to get games into Hamling/Kolodjashnij/Walker/Blicavs/MBrown/whoever at FB while the experienced defenders are still around.

The players wanted FA, the AFL brought it in to ward off a court challenge by the players for restraint of trade.
I've got no problem with it. I mean it's really unfair that a guy gets picked up by an utter disaster of a club like the Dees and then forced to spend his entire career there.

Can someone explain to me why FA is good for footy? I'm not asking this because the Hawks got him and not us, I would feel the same way if we landed him. Has a good FA player gone to a worse club before? Does anyone really think Melbourne would be a chance so snag Dangerfield next year and not us, Pies or Hawks even though they would have the biggest cap to do so?

The right to work where you like is a fundamental right of all people...
Unfortunately people think of players as their own slaves-assets.... PERIOD.
Free Agency is about players... Not clubs...Not fans...Not football...
I understand it and I like that they have freedoms that we have in society...
Is it good for football??? I think so....
Makes club officials earn their money...
They have to think outside the square... develop lists and at the same time obtain players via FA too compliment their lists.
I think it's great for all involved... Too bad the AFL are a decade or two behind everyone one else...

I reckon the jury is still out on Kersten and at 20 years of age Membrey might not be a bad option. Will Vardy return fully fit, is Kersten good enough? It's obvious the Cats want more options up forward besides Hawkins. The Hawks had Roughead, Gunston and Breust all kicking goals in 2014.

Jeez talk about the grass being greener. The guy's played 1 game and is all of a year younger than Kersten. Membrey looks a handy player but I'd have that position miles down our list of needs with Bartel, Kersten and then guys like McCarthy, Menzel, etc being possibilities as mid-sized forwards.

not to mention plenty of supporters here would have to " be willing to endure a phase of getting to grip with not winning all the time"

Im not sure they could cope. 17 -5 and 2 finals losses drew vitriol the likes not seen.

Are we really easy to see what 12 wins creates?

Yes these are good points. However FA isn't good for the equalisation of the comp. I actually didn't think it would be this way, I thought good players would leave good clubs to chase money from the poor teams that have plenty of salary room due to their lack of stars. But it seems that players are willing to sacrifice financial gain for success (except GA), like I said I bet Melbourne wont have a chance of landing Dangerfield next year despite presumably having the largest offer.
So yes player welfare is the big winner here but equalisation isn't.

Membrey would cost SFA. I would consider it if the club think they can turn him into a mid.

Its reasonable to say the jury is still out on Shane. 9 games not enough. Membrey has what..1? Kersten needs to play as a #3 forward which in the AFL team he has yet to do. He needs to play to his strengths. One on one lead up roaming the 50. Not sitting in Hawks area waiting for it to land on his head - it is not his deal. A full preseason with a new contract and a bit of confidence will do wonders.

If the jury is out on Kersten then it certainly is on Membrey. I just think we have higher priorities than to bring in another mid sized forward. I'd be prioritising a key ruckman and clearance mids before looking at Membrey.

If the club rate him then go for it. But we don't have a lot of space on our list and speculating on a 3rd tall forward possibly being turned into a midfielder probably isn't the best use of a list spot in our situation. He'd want to come pretty cheap as well since he was pick 46 a couple of years ago and has played a grand total of 1 AFL game. Frankly if we're looking for a midfielder we should look at the bloke who was taken 30-odd picks later than Membrey in the same draft, is the same size and has shown more than him actually playing in that position...and he's already on our list.
