I don't follow Geelong's VFL side much but thought that some of the comments regarding Adam Varcoe and Jesse Stringer were fairly harsh seeing Stringer didn't play due to injury (after playing in pre-season in his first season) and Adam Varcoe suffered because of injury.

Is it harsh or what you would expect? I would have thought both would at least get another crack especially on the rookie list.

Adam Varcoe*: Brother of Travis Varcoe. Suffered a serious knee injury during the season and looks unlikely to be retained for 2011.
Yeah nah completely wrong. As if we would dump Adam, after seeing Travis take a bit of time to blossom into a gun, not to mention that it might piss Travis off a little.

Ranga Ediriwickrama*: The New South Welshman has battled chronic hamstring problems since joining the Cats. Made 14 appearances in the VFL this year, but was never among the best players and looks unlikely to be retained for another season.

Would have thought Ranga would be given another year considering he was a very promising junior.

I would be very surprised if Varcoe was cut. Take Travis out of the equation entirely and just go on Adam's performances and he is worth another year. Whenever I've seen him play he has looked better than Motlop.

My precitions for the rookies

Promote: Pods
Retain: Varcoe, Weston, Johnson
Delist: Allwright, Stringer, Ranga

I wonder if Drum signed a two year deal? The forgotten man of the Geelong list.

Yeah they have got it wrong re the rookies, although none of us really know what will happen with all the rookies because most have had so many injuries (Stringer hasn't even played a VFL game I think).

Adam Varcoe was doing so well before he did his knee again that I would have said he would be an absolute monty to get promoted onto the main list. He might not now (i.e. he might be kept on the rookie list for another year instead) but I really doubt he will be delisted.

Btw SR, Drum is signed for 2011, Balme said so.

saved me the time, cheers.
Would have been pretty funny if he had jagged the Brownlow, he went very close indeed - probably should have got a few 3s early which didn't fall his way.

Stopped reading here.

Reminds me of someone in the AA thread on the main board saying SJ wasn't his usual scintillating self this year. He just kicked more goals in a season than any other time in his career....

Tom Gillies: Emerging defender played six senior games in 2010, most of them when regular full-back Matthew Scarlett was sidelined by injury. Will be a key player for Geelong in the future.

Umm he didn't play a single game in 2010.

So many things wrong. Obviously written by someone that has no idea about the players or the club.

I'd think Varcoe would be a strong chance to be elevated and delisting Stringer after one year seems totally illogical unless the injuries degenerative or something. Allwright and Ranga will probably be let go, sadly.

Rest was about as you'd expect, no real stunning insights.

Yes, he played 6 games in 2009. Maybe they just tried to cut and paste last year's list assessment :D

Noobs.

I thought he was going to be a handy acquisition but with his injury problems Lonergan got first crack at the spot and made it his own.

He is caught in the middle a little bit now. Mackie and T.Hunt didn't get a run in the finals teams and Laidler and Gillies are around also. It makes it tough for him even with a retirement or two from the backline.

Barely played a good game (by his standards) in the first 10 rounds. He certainly managed his fair share of 4 - 6 goal hauls in the second half of the year, but hardly had the same impact overall as in 2007 and 2008, particularly in big games.

Greetings lads. Wondering of you guys are a chance of trading Adam varcoe? Saw the afl assessment and thought it may have been a little harsh, but then again I'm an outsider.

Anyway, if so, what would you want for him?

Also, if the great man stays will you look at trading Travis to free up space in the salary cap?

In short the person who wrote the assessment is an idiot. I couldn't see the club wanting to trade Adam as he has a lot of potential and could be a possibility to debut next year.

As for Travis i don't think he would be on big $ and i don't think Geelong would even think about getting rid of him. He is still young and yet has become so important to the team. On top of that he is still improving and nowhere near his peak so it would be stupid to think about trading him.

Looks like they just went to the SportingPulse website for the VFL players, looked at the best and made a judgment purely on that.

Fair enough. I'm a Melbourne based crows supporter... I'm used to shit journalism.

Rumours only so please don't quote me on this but I heard about 2 months ago he'd agreed to terms for a new contract. He intends to stay. All I heard about Adam was that he was devastated about his injury and he was worried he'd be cut. He also intends to stay.

That is the way I see it going too.

the guy who wrote it is a nob.l dont follow the VFL side as much as l should but even l knew what he was saying is all BS.young varcoe will stay but l think there will be some tough choices by the list management on who stays and who gets the chop chop. there has been a lost of injurys with the players this year with allwright, varcoe jr,ranga, west, sting, moptop, drum and mitch brown

Maybe, although as I've said from the first day Drum got here, he and Laidler are HB replacements for your Enright and Dasher types, whereas Gillies and Lonners are KPB's, which I don't think either Drum or Laidler are.

Wells obviously sees something in him so if he can have an injury free pre season, he'll play some NAB games, and from there it's up to him to grab a spot and keep it.

Given most of our 2009 premiership team will be retired in 3-4 years, and Travis has so many years left in him, he'd be the last player we'd trade out. Purely from an age basis, if the cap forced us to trade, we'd trade byrnes, stokes, mackie, maybe even kelly before we'd even consider trading travis, and even then we still wouldn't.

Adam is a different case because he's now had his second knee reco, so it comes down to whether the club thinks his body can withstand afl footy, but I think they will give him that opportunity.
