AFL Live 2

That's the worst thing about sports games that are made by lazy developers.

Instead of doing the more complex thing and making the AI better, they make your team worse and things that you could do on easy difficulty simply don't work. I noticed that on legendary my players wouldn't even jump up to spoil even though I was pressing the right buttons. They make it harder by making you worse and there is nothing you can do about it.

spot on; medium's too easy but is almost kinda sorta fun, hard is ****ing stupid, legendary makes me want to tear my hair out. how about when you're in a marking contest and hitting the A button makes you bend over and run out of the way?

Definite case of Ross-coloured glasses in this thread. Is AFL Live 2 flawless? Nope. Is AFL Live 1 flawless? Nope. Ross has been great as far as feedback goes but if this game was put out by Big Ant, I seriously doubt that there would be as much backlash. A number of the people complaining are those that don't even have/haven't played the game and another group of people complaining are those that bought it, played a couple of games and made the decision to take it back rather than, y'know, trying to improve.

It's an AFL game. It's never going to be up to EA/2K standard. AFL has a larger playing area than NHL, NBA etc, 36 players on the field, three umpires and a thousand different rules and variants. What you will get from any AFL game now and very likely in the next 10 years will be exactly that - an AFL game.

AFL Live 2 isn't an award-winning piece of mastery but neither was AFL Live 1. It's an AFL game that is incredibly expensive to develop given the complex nature of Australian Rules and even more difficult to develop considering the very small target audience in comparison to EA/2K title games.

Cheers.

What about things like spotting up players down the wing or switching play to a loose man in the back half - can this be done?

Wrong! I have both games and AL1 is many times better than this. Everyone is disappointed that instead of minor improvements it has made major steps backwards which is bizarre.

They spent 2-3 years developing AFL Live 1 and put together the foundations for a decent game. Then after a lot of feedback and some clear priorities that would have made the game good for an AFL game, they threw the game away and asked a cheaper company to start from scratch. I'm not trying to be nice to whoever this Ross fellow is, I don't care. I just would prefer to see them work on improving the game than changing engines all over again, especially to one that's probably based on their Wii/iPhone engine instead of the one that was specifically made for PS3/360 two years ago.

When you say 'they', you mean Tru Blu right? BigAnt had nothing to do with this version.

I find it hard to believe a Tru Blu employee would act this way.

inb4 "I don't" from the haters.

There were some key mechanics in that first game that bugged me to no end. In particular the way in which center clearances were won based on what I liked to call 'Last Man Standing'. Pretty much every player around the contest picks the ball up and gets tackled instantly, taking 3 hours to get to their feet until there is only one player left to take possession and get the clearance, which makes it almost completely reliant on AI positioning around the contest.

It was pretty much impossible to get any form of clean play in congestion, sometimes i'd be able to get some clean handballs out (While being tackled, of course.) and get a few handball chains going to get a clearance, but it was a rare occurence, and making it look good and clean was even harder.

You can get clean play. It is difficult when you first play to not just get stuck with tackle/handball but after you master the game, it's not hard to tap to a man, shepherd and burst away and pinpoint a forward with some very clean play and some precision kicking.

Exactly right. From reading this thread you could swear AFL Live 1 was at the level of 2k or EA. People are just totally blinded, it seems.

Simmed a season in career mode and found out just how ridiculous trading is.

Scott McMahon + Pick 107 for Jeremy Cameron

Ended up making a super team for the luls. Nabbed Cameron, Wingard, Motlop, Melksham and Dangerfield.

Oh well though, kinda fun to play and hey, an AFL game is an AFL game in the end of the day.

Can anyone confirm whether or not the career mode in Rugby League Live 2 by Big Ant is any better than this? I'd love to know the answer to that question.

There is still no excuse for not fixing obvious glitches and game flaws. Not including team songs just shows how much passion they had when making this game. None.

Nobody was expecting it to have good graphics, awesome AI and flawless gameplay. That is completely understandable.

Ever heard of an Indie game? Those are sometimes made by one person and I know for a fact that most of them have a very small budget to work with. However they still make the most out of their time and money and come up with some awesome stuff. Some of the best games I have ever played were Indie ones.

I don't think anybody expected it to be like an EA or 2K game. However there are some unforgivable signs of laziness all throughout this game that have nothing to do with their budget or development challenges.

Friggen hell, dude. Most of these indie game developers aren't making a game as complicated as an AFL game, though. It's a totally different story making a first person shooter or a minecraft style game. Making an AFL game with a low budget would be extremely difficult. This "indie game" excuse is irrelevant and ridiculous.

It has been said multiple times in this thread that there are teams songs, you just have to wait until the commentators have shut up at the end of the match.

I must have missed those posts then my mistake. I just assumed they would have played almost straight away.

There are still some horrible glitches and things that desperately need fixing in this game though. Its a shame because I thought elements of the gameplay for the most part was much improved.

I had to stop here.

Straight up, Big Ant wouldn't have released the game in the state that it is in. It's as simple as that.

Wasn't an excuse, just a comparison.

I've already said nobody expected it to be high quality like other sports games and I could accept its shortcomings. Saying the game is 'complicated' because its a sports game shouldn't be any reason for us to accept the amount of glitches and flaws within the game.

If it is that complicated then they should have worked on it for another 6 months in time for the start of next season.

Don't get me wrong, I never think anyone should settle for glitches or bugs in a game. I also despise the fact that many games, not just AFLL2 are being brought out unfinished and improved with DLC you have to pay for later.

In regards to it being extremely complicated, I'm just saying that I could imagine it would be an extremely difficult sport to get 100% right. We can see that by the quality of AFL video games brought out in the past (SNES-Current). None of them are anywhere near a great representation of the sport. Saying indie developers do a great job on a little budget is irrelevant. You need A-grade developers across the board and a lot of them to make an AFL game fantastic and I don't think that'll happen. Big Ant was probably the best we would have gotten, but that's done, at least for now.
