AFL draft worry as rehearsal abandoned in shambles

The AFL is scrambling to fix problems that on Wednesday night forced a rehearsal of the national draft to be abandoned in a shambles.
Clubs were left frustrated and nervous about what might happen on Thursday night after the farcical rehearsal at Marvel Stadium.

"It was a complete debacle," a club recruiter said. "It doesn't fill you confidence about tonight. You have enough on your plate thinking about players without that."

The problems arose when the internet at the rehearsal crashed. The dry run was intended to trial in real time how live trading of draft picks - which has been introduced this year for the first time - would work.

Troublingly the rehearsal connectivity problems arose without media also there also using the WiFi.

The AFL told clubs on Wednesday night they would fix the problem but a back-up plan would be for the clubs to lodge their picks by pen and paper with AFL-employed runners scuttling along the corridors from club boxes to the AFL hub. The event is being broadcast live on Foxtel.

Said one club official: "We were laughing about it because they said they go back to pen and paper and hire people to run the picks in from the rooms. So the runners are back! They tried to kill them off but they are back."

Absolutely classic. This is going to be hilarious

The NFL still has runners and the clubs aren't even at the draft venue, except for 2 team reps sitting waiting for the call to come in. Surely Gil has watched Draft Day?

The internet crashed. LOL! Are they still using fricken dial up modems down there???

I work in Telco / IT, so I find it laughable that Wifi and internet cannot work in this day and age at an almost empty stadium in a first world country. The lack of proper planning and testing is just appalling. Bunch of amateurs!

To be fair though Australia's internet is 3rd world

You'd think games being played there and 40k people using it simultaneously would've been a good test of the wifi capabilities - it drops out all the time and when it is connected it's slow af.

Why don't they follow what the NFL do on draft days and they trade players as well for picks etc with each team having a so called " War Room " with telephones and their recruiters in it that call other teams and discuss things before their picks are due.

NFL also has live streamed vision from each teams " War Room " and you can see the teams getting calls and discussing trades right up to the last moment.

AFL are just so inept at anything they try to implement and the NFL has got live trading of picks AND players on draft day 100% foolproof.

Wouldn't they have 1 network for the clubs and officials?
1 network for the media, and then the general stadium game day wifi for any poor fans who turn up to the event?

It's quite amusing really.

I believe the plan was for each team to be set up in a corporate box as their own warm room but they may have axed that.

I think we're a long way off the 30 people in a big war room set up and a long way off live trading of players. But it's a joke they can't manage a pretty simple draft with the capacity to trade picks and make it a nice TV experience.

Bit harsh.

You do realise the reason for trial runs is to find problems and sort them out?
